Üç katmanı ayrı tutun: gözlemler (past simple, kesin sayılar), yorumlar (may, tend to, suggest) ve sınırlar.
- Gözlem: “The parents gave fewer directions in the mixed room.”
- Yorum: “Open displays may support wider exploration.”
- Sınır: “The pilot doesn’t prove what all children prefer.”
- Sonraki adım: “We need a larger trial.”
Temkinli genelleme: all’dan some’a
- Miktar: all, most, many, some, a few. “Some children made an immediate choice, while many explored several tables.”
- tend to + yalın fiil: “Visitors tend to try more activities when staff demonstrate them.”
- may, might: doğru olabilir; can: bazen doğrudur. “Packaging may influence a first choice, but it cannot predict every child’s interests.”
- Generally speaking, in general: genelde doğru olan. On the whole: farklı durumları tarttıktan sonra varılan genel yargı. “On the whole, mixed displays encourage more exploration.”
- Türkçedeki “Çocuklar seçeneğe ihtiyaç duyar” gibi genel bir cümlede the kullanılmaz: “Children need choices.” Belirli bir grup için the gerekir: “The children in the pilot tried more activities.”
“The observations verified that adult guidance affected the first table visited.”
“The results suggest that signs matter.”
- discover, turn out: yeni bir şey netleşti. “The mixed layout turned out to support broader exploration.”
- argue: biri bulgu değil, gerekçe sunar. “One designer argued that branding did not need to divide the room.”
Maya I'm pleased with the mixed layout. Most children tried at least three activities.
Owen I'm pleased too, but I'm worried about making a large claim from sixteen families.
Maya That's fair. The pilot doesn't prove what all children prefer. It shows that adults and signs can influence a first choice.
Owen So we agree about the layout. We only disagree about how strongly we describe the result.
Türkçedeki “-le ilgilenmek” ve “-le gurur duymak” yüzünden “interested with” ya da “proud with” demek kolaydır; doğrusu interested in ve proud of.
- pleased with: “I’m pleased with the result.”
- worried about: “I’m worried about making a large claim.”
- proud of, excited about: “We’re proud of the pilot and excited about testing it again.”
- interested in: “I was interested in the demonstration effect.”
- depend on: “The final layout depends on the number of tables available.”
Önce konuşun, sonra 140–170 kelime yazın
Bu soruyu iki dakika boyunca sesli tartışın: “What do people often say about a whole group, and what evidence would support it?”
Sonra bir genellemeye dört bölümde yanıt verin:
- İddiayı sınırlandırın: “People sometimes claim that different groups naturally prefer different activities. In my opinion, this is too simple.”
- Bir kanıt ve onun sınırını verin: “The result does not prove that every mixed display will have the same effect.”
- Uygulanabilir bir öneriyle bitirin: “On the whole, adults should offer a broad range of choices.”
Sık yapılan hatalar
İlk ikisi iddiayı kanıttan daha güçlü kurar; diğerleri dil bilgisi hatasıdır:
- Küçük bir pilot uygulama için “The study proves that children prefer…” demek. Bunun yerine “The study suggests that…” deyin.
- Most’u kastederken “All people…” demek. Bunun yerine “Most people…” deyin.
- “People tend to trying…” Doğrusu “People tend to try…”
- “I’m worried for making a mistake.” Doğrusu “I’m worried about making a mistake.”
- Genel olarak çocukları kastederken “The children need choices” demek. Doğrusu “Children need choices.”
Günde 10 dakikalık pratik
Her cümleyi yazmadan önce sesli söyleyin.
- 2 dakika: Konuşmayı dinleyin ve her temkinli ifadeyi not edin.
- 2 dakika: Pleased with ve worried about ile kendi hayatınızdan gerçek cümleler kurun.
