Mustn’t mı, don’t have to mu?

A woman organizes audience entry at an arts centre while a man notices an urgent missed call and a technician waits by sound equipment.

B1 seviyesinde have to, must, mustn’t, don’t have to, should ve ought to: bir telefon kuralı için dar bir istisna isteyip iki koşulda anlaşarak pratik yapın.

I understand the rule, but I must be reachable tonight. Could reception keep my phone?” Bunun altında dört anlam vardır: have to ve must (gerekli), mustn’t (yasak), don’t have to (gerekli değil) ve should ya da ought to (tavsiye).

  • Must ve have to’yu bilen ama mustn’t ile don’t have to’nun neden bu kadar farklı anlamlara geldiğinden emin olmayan orta seviye yetişkinler.
  • Henüz erken: Hâlâ “I must to go” diyorsanız ya da “Do you have to…?” sorusunu kuramıyorsanız önce A2 seviyesinde basit kurallar ve seçenekler üzerinde çalışın; bu yazı bütün bu fiilleri kurabildiğinizi varsayar.
  • Fazla kolay: Bu anlamları düşünmeden seçiyor ve rahatça pazarlık edebiliyorsanız B2’ye geçin: iş yerindeki macera kurslarının lehinde ve aleyhinde dengeli bir yazı yazın.

Konuşma

maya Before you go in, you have to leave your phone in the secure box. We had two complaints after last week's screening.

owen I understand the rule, but the care home may call about my father tonight. I must be reachable.

maya You mustn't take a call inside, and the phone shouldn't even vibrate near the seats.

owen Could reception keep it? You don't have to interrupt the film. Someone could quietly come and get me.

maya That could work. You ought to give reception your seat number and the caller's number.

owen Fine. I'll switch off every other notification, and I won't swipe through messages during the film.

maya Then you don't have to miss the screening. I'll tell the duty manager why we made the exception.

Cümle yapısı

Do I have to leave my phone in the box?

Normally, yes. You mustn't use it in the auditorium, but reception can hold it and alert you quietly.

Acknowledge the shared purpose before requesting a limited, practical exception.

  • I understand the rule.
  • Could we make an exception?
  • That seems reasonable.

Bu yapıların hepsinden sonra fiilin yalın hâli gelir; to yalnızca have to ve ought to’da kalır. Türkçedeki “-meli” hem must’ı hem should’u karşılayabildiği için önce bunun bir kural mı yoksa tavsiye mi olduğuna karar verin.

  • Gerekli, genellikle dışarıdan gelen bir kural yüzünden: have to. “Audience members have to keep devices silent.” Sorular do ile kurulur: “Do I have to leave my phone in the box?”
  • Gerekli, çoğu zaman konuşan kişinin kendi görüşüne göre: must. “I must be reachable tonight.”
  • Yasak: mustn’t. “Guests mustn’t answer calls inside the auditorium.”
  • Gerekli değil, yani seçim sizin: don’t have to. “You don’t have to switch your phone off if reception keeps it.”
  • Tavsiye, kuraldan daha yumuşak: should, shouldn’t, ought to. “You ought to give reception your seat number.”

Mustn’t mı, don’t have to mu: anlamı tersine çeviren ikili

Olumsuz cümlede must ile have to ayrılır: mustn’t bir yasaktır, don’t have to zorunluluğu kaldırır, shouldn’t ise yalnızca kötü bir fikirdir. Türkçede “almamalısın” hem yasak hem tavsiye olabilir; “zorunda değilsin” ise her zaman don’t have to’dur. Mustn’t kelimesindeki ilk t okunmaz.

  • “You shouldn’t take a call there.” Kötü bir fikir.
  • “You mustn’t take a call there.” İzin yok.
  • “You don’t have to take a call there.” Gerekli değil.

Dar bir istisnayı dört adımda istemek

Bir talep, kuralın amacını koruduğunda makul duyulur. Gerekçeyi somut verin ama özel ayrıntıya girmeyin.

  • Kuralı kabul edin: “I understand the rule.”
  • Tek bir gerekçe verin: “The care home may call about my father tonight.”
  • Sınırlı bir alternatif önerin: “Could we make an exception? Could reception keep my phone?”
  • Koşul sunun: “I’ll switch off every other notification, and I won’t check messages during the film.”

Önemli aramalar için telefon dili

Bunları kalıp olarak öğrenin.

  • Call back, yani geri aramak: “The nurse asked him to call back after nine.”
  • Aramalar ters gittiğinde: “I tried twice, but the line was engaged.” “They put me on hold.” “We were cut off.” Amerikan İngilizcesinde engaged yerine busy denir.
  • Go off, yani aniden çalmak: “A phone went off during the welcome speech.”

Sık yapılan hatalar

Bunlara dikkat edin:

  • Yasak için “You don’t have to use your phone inside” demek. Doğrusu “You mustn’t use your phone inside.”
  • “I must to leave early.” Must’tan sonra to gelmez: “I must leave early.” Ama ought, to’yu korur: “You ought to give them your number.”
  • “Did you must wait?” Must’ın geçmiş hâli yoktur: “Did you have to wait?”
  • “I need my phone” talepkâr duyulur. “I understand the rule, but…” ile başlayın.

I think there ought to be…”, “People mustn’t…, but…”, “You don’t have to…, unless…”.

  • “Should cinemas and restaurants make their own phone rules, or should people decide for themselves?”
  • “Is it fair for an employer to ban phones in meetings? Who should get an exception?”

Günde 10 dakikalık pratik

Her şeyi sesli söyleyin.

  • 3 dakika: Hayatınızdan have to, mustn’t ve don’t have to ile üç gerçek kural.
  • 2 dakika: Ought to ve I won’t ile iki koşul yazın.

Mustn’t ile don’t have to arasındaki fark nedir?

Mustn’t bir şeyin yasak olduğunu söyler: “You mustn’t take a call inside.” Don’t have to ise gerekli olmadığını söyler: “You don’t have to miss the screening.”

Must’ın geçmiş zamanı nedir?

Zorunluluk anlamında must’ın geçmiş hâli yoktur; had to kullanılır: “We had to leave our phones at the door.” Gelecek için will have to kullanılır.

I know phones aren’t allowed inside, but could I leave mine at reception? I won’t check messages.”
