İngilizce pratiği

İngilizcede evini bir misafire nasıl anlatırsın? not as … as, too ve enough (B1 Preliminary)

A teenager shows his small flat and a sofa bed full of cushions while one friend films and another holds a laptop showing three friends on a video call. A cat sleeps in a laundry basket in the narrow hall.

Değişim programıyla gelecek bir misafire evini B1 seviyesinde anlatmak (B1 Preliminary ve B1 Preliminary for Schools): not as … as, too … to, big enough, much bigger, ev kelimeleri ve 60 kelimelik örnek ev sahibi profili.

İşin çoğunu dört kalıp görür: “not as … as”, “too … to”, “big enough” ve karşılaştırma sıfatından önce “much”.

  • Fazla kolay: Bu profili on dakikada hatasız yazabiliyorsan B1 Preliminary’deki dört notlu, 100 kelimelik e-postaya geç (aşağıdaki bağlantı).

Konuşma

Narrator Max Carter's reaction video to Kai's 'cheese' clip was all over school. But by Saturday, the Loop had a new job: home tours for a possible exchange week.

Theo OK, welcome to my flat. It isn't as big as your house, Lucas. It's much smaller, to be honest.

Lucas Small is fine! My house is bigger, but it's far from everything. Your flat is much closer to the city centre.

Deniz My flat has a balcony with a great view of the bay. But our spare room is too small to fit two beds.

Kai Theo, this hall is too narrow to film in. I can't get far enough back!

Zara Wait. Is that Byline asleep in your laundry basket?

Kai Abuela said he needed a day out. He looks more relaxed than any of us.

Hana Theo, the best home isn't the biggest one. It's the one where a guest feels welcome.

Theo Then maybe my flat is big enough. A guest can have the sofa bed and all the cushions.

Zara Let's compare all three homes honestly. Every home has something the others don't.

Cümle yapısı

Write a host profile for your home (about 60 words).

Hi! I live in a small flat near the city centre with my mum and my little brother. It isn't as big as a house, but it's cosy and convenient: the bus stop is right outside. You'll have the spare room, which is quiet enough to study in. We usually have dinner at seven, and you're welcome to join us!

The model has 60 words. It says where the home is, compares it (isn't as big as), says where the guest will sleep (quiet enough to study in), gives a routine and ends with an invitation.

  • Hi! I live in … with …
  • It isn't as … as …, but …
  • You'll have / You'll share …
  • … enough to …
  • We usually …
  • You're welcome to …

Host families for the exchange week

A · Poppy

We live in a flat on Harbour Road, just two minutes from the harbour, so you can watch the boats every day. My family loves cooking, and on Sundays we make a traditional British lunch together. You can help! You can also borrow my old bike to get around Kingsbay.

B · Freya

Our flat is right in the city centre, above a bookshop in Market Square, so the shops and cafés are just downstairs. I've got a big bedroom and I'd love to share it with a girl my age. My mum is an art teacher, and we often paint together at the kitchen table.

C · Harry

We live in a house at the edge of the city with a huge garden, and we play football there every evening. My brother and I share a big bedroom, and there's space for a third bed for a boy guest. Our dog, Biscuit, is very friendly and loves playing with visitors.

D · Alfie

Our house is next to a big park, and our garden is big enough for football. My dad and I play every evening. We haven't got any pets. A guest would share my bedroom; I'm thirteen, like most of the exchange students.

E · Maisie

Our flat is on King Street, next to the shops, and it's a five-minute walk from Harbour Park School, so you can get up a bit later than most students! You'll have your own small room. Nobody in my family eats meat or fish, and my dad makes the best vegetable curry in Kingsbay. My mum and I love drawing together.

F · Reuben

Our house is only ten minutes on foot from Harbour Park School, and the guest has the spare room at the top of the house. We love barbecues in the garden, with burgers, sausages and chicken, so come hungry! My dad can teach you to cook them, and you can borrow my bike at weekends.

G · Isla

We live in a quiet house opposite the park. There are no young children in the family, so it's peaceful enough to study. My grandfather plays the piano every evening, and guests are welcome to use it. The guest room is small but comfortable.

H · Rory

Our house is near the park, and there's a piano in the living room that anyone can play. My twin sisters are four years old. They're lovely, but very loud! The guest room is next to theirs, so it's never really quiet.

Seven ways to compare

not as … as

Use it to say one thing has less of something than another.

My flat isn't as big as your house.

as … as

Use it to say two things are the same in some way.

The guest room is as quiet as a library.

too + adjective + to

more than is OK, so something is not possible

This hall is too narrow to film in.

not + adjective + enough to

less than you need, so something is not possible

The spare room isn't big enough to fit two beds.

adjective + enough (to / for)

as much as you need

Maybe my flat is big enough for a guest.

much / far + comparative

Use it to show a big difference. Never use very here.

Your flat is much closer to the city centre.

a bit + comparative

Use it to show a small difference.

Theo's sofa bed is a bit shorter than a normal bed.

Why is my home right for Deniz?

Why is your home right for me?

Because it's quite close to the sea, so you can still see boats, and it's much quieter than your street. You're welcome to come to basketball with me on Saturday.

  • Because it's …
  • It's much …er than …
  • You're welcome to …
  • Would you like to …?

  • “Hi! I live in a small flat near the city centre with my mum and my little brother.” → nerede ve evde kimler yaşıyor
  • “It isn’t as big as a house, but it’s cosy and convenient: the bus stop is right outside.” → bir gerekçeyle dürüst bir karşılaştırma
  • “You’ll have the spare room, which is quiet enough to study in.” → misafirin nerede uyuyacağı (ya da “You’ll share my room.”)
  • “We usually have dinner at seven,” → ailenin bir alışkanlığı
  • “and you’re welcome to join us!” → davet

Dürüstçe karşılaştır: not as … as, much ve a bit

“Not as … as” bir şeyde bir özelliğin daha az olduğunu söyler: “My flat isn’t as big as your house.” İki as da zayıf söylenir, vurguyu sıfata ver: as BIG as. Not olmadan eşitlik anlatır: “as quiet as a library”.

Büyük bir fark için karşılaştırma sıfatından önce much ya da far, küçük bir fark için a bit kullan: “much closer”, “a bit shorter”. Türkçedeki “çok daha küçük” İngilizcede “much smaller” olur. Bir ev sahibi ile arkadaşını dinle:

Ev sahibi OK, welcome to my flat. It isn't as big as your house, Lucas. It's much smaller, to be honest.

Arkadaş Small is fine! My house is bigger, but it's far from everything. Your flat is much closer to the city centre.

Too … to ve enough: boyut bir şeyi engellediğinde

“Too” gereğinden fazla demektir, yani bir şey mümkün değildir: “This hall is too narrow to film in.”

Sondaki in’i atma: odada ders çalışırsın, bu yüzden “quiet enough to study in” dersin. Too ve enough’ı dinleyerek bul:

Arkadaş 1 My flat has a balcony with a great view of the bay. But our spare room is too small to fit two beds.

Arkadaş 2 Theo, this hall is too narrow to film in. I can't get far enough back!

  • Yerler: balcony, view, neighbourhood, spare room, sofa bed.
  • Odalarda: wardrobe, shelf, curtains, cushion, duvet, pillow.
  • Misafir ağırlamak: host, guest, share. Accommodation İngiliz İngilizcesinde sayılamaz: “The school needs accommodation for all the guests.”
  • Dikkat: Türkçedeki “salon” İngilizcede “living room” olur; İngilizcede salon kuaför ya da güzellik salonudur.
Bu üniteyi kendi yolunla öğren

Sesli söyle: gerekçeler ve davetler

Misafir, evinin ona neden uygun olduğunu sorabilir. Biri karşılaştırma olan iki gerekçe ver: “It’s close to the sea, so you can watch the boats, and it’s much quieter than your street.”

  • Davet etmek: “Would you like to come to the market with us?”
  • Cevap vermek: “I’d love to!” ya da “Thanks, but I’d rather stay in.” I’d rather’dan sonra fiil to almaz.

Tipik hatalar ve doğruları

Bitirince bunları ara (okun solunda hata, sağında doğrusu). Çoğu Türkçeden kelime kelime çeviriden gelir.

  • “My flat isn’t as big than your house.” → “My flat isn’t as big as your house.”
  • “The sofa bed is enough big.” → “The sofa bed is big enough.” “Yeterince büyük” sırası İngilizcede tersine döner.
  • “The hall is too much narrow for film.” → “The hall is too narrow to film in.”
  • “Your view is very better than mine.” → “Your view is much better than mine.”

Too ile enough arasındaki fark nedir?

“Too” istediğinden fazla demektir, yani bir şey mümkün olmaz: “too small to fit two beds”. “Enough” ihtiyacın kadar demektir: “big enough for one guest”.

“As big as” mı, “as big than” mı?

“As big as”. Than yalnızca karşılaştırma sıfatından sonra gelir: “bigger than”.
