Must, mustn’t ya da don’t have to? A2 Key Okuma Bölüm 1 için İngilizcede okul kuralları

Three friends look at the picture signs in a school corridor next to a lost-property box.

İngilizcede kural anlatmak: can, must, mustn’t, have to ve don’t have to farkı, “Are we allowed to…?” sorusu ve okul duyuruları. A2 seviyesi, A2 Key ve A2 Key for Schools için, 11–15 yaş.

Gerekli bir şey için “must” ya da “have to”, yasak bir şey için “mustn’t” ya da “can’t”, gerekli olmayan bir şey için “don’t have to” kullanılır. En önemli fark: “You mustn’t run.” “Koşma, yasak!” demektir; “You don’t have to run.” ise “Koşmak zorunda değilsin, istersen yürü.”

  • “must” kelimesini bilen ama “mustn’t” ile “don’t have to” kalıbını karıştıran ya da “must to” yazanlar.
  • Veliler için: Çocuğunuza okulundaki kuralları sorun; aşağıdaki kısa oyun için iyi İngilizce bilmeniz gerekmez.
  • Henüz erken: Günlük rutinini “always”, “sometimes” ve “never” ile anlatmak hâlâ zorsa önce “How often…?” sorularıyla ilgili A2 Key yazısına bak.
  • Fazla kolay: Bu kalıpları düşünmeden kullanıyor ve geçmişteki kuralları “had to” ile anlatabiliyorsan B1 Preliminary görevlerine geç.

Tips from Year 8

AMARA: I'm new too. I started at Harbour Park this September. On my first day, I got lost and walked into the wrong classroom! My tip: ask for a school map in the library. The librarian can give you one. And don't be afraid to ask other pupils. Most people here are really friendly.

KAI: Here's my best tip: the dining room gets very busy after 12.45, so go early. You don't have to buy lunch. You can bring food from home. Oh, and you mustn't use your phone in lessons. Teachers take it away until the end of the day!

ZARA: Always look at your timetable the night before. Put your books, a pencil and a ruler in your bag before you go to bed. You must be in class at 8.45, so don't be late. If you have a problem, you can talk to any teacher.

  • “can” (sorun yok): “You can borrow three books.”
  • “can’t” (olmaz): “You can’t use your phone in lessons.”
  • “must” (kural): “You must be in class by 8.30.”
  • “have to” / “has to” (gerekli): “We have to wear trainers in the gym.”
  • “mustn’t” (yapma, yasak): “You mustn’t run in the corridors.”
  • “don’t have to” (gerekli değil): “You don’t have to buy lunch.”

Mustn’t mı, don’t have to mu? Asıl fark

Olumlu cümlede “must” ile “have to” birbirine çok yakındır: ikisi de bir şeyin gerekli olduğunu söyler. Olumsuzda ise ayrılırlar. “Mustn’t” yasak demektir; “don’t have to” ise kural yok, seçim senin demektir. Türkçe düşünmek burada işe yarar: “yapmak yasak” → “mustn’t”, “yapmak zorunda değilsin” → “don’t have to”. Hızlı test: sonuna “ama istersen yapabilirsin” ekleyebiliyorsan “don’t have to” gerekir.

  • “You mustn’t eat in the lab. It isn’t safe.” → yapma, yasak.
  • “You don’t have to wear a uniform.” → istediğini giy.
  • “It’s Saturday, so I don’t have to get up early.” → gerek yok.

Dinle: yeni bir okulda kurallar

Üç öğrenci okuldaki tabelalara bakıyor. İçlerinden biri okulda yeni ve Gana’nın Akra şehrindeki eski okulunu hatırlıyor. Her kural kalıbını dinle, sonra “had to”ya dikkat et: “must” kelimesinin geçmiş biçimi yoktur, bu yüzden hem “must” hem “have to” geçmişte “had to” olur.

Bir kuralı sormak: “Can I…?” ve “Are we allowed to…?”

Bir şeyin serbest olup olmadığını sormak için “Can I…?” ya da “Are we allowed to…?”, gerekli olup olmadığını sormak için “Do I have to…?” de. Türkçede soru “do” gibi bir yardımcı fiille kurulmadığı için “We have to wear a uniform?” gibi sorular sık görülür; doğrusu “Do we have to wear a uniform?”. Kısa cevaplar sorunun ilk kelimesini tekrar eder.

  • “Can I sit here?” “Yes, you can.”
  • “Are we allowed to use calculators?” “No, we aren’t.”
  • “Do I have to bring a dictionary?” “No, you don’t.”

  • “POOL: Students must wear a swimming cap.” → “You need a cap to swim here.”
  • “No food in the computer room.” → “You can’t eat in the computer room.”
  • “Sports Day: no uniform needed.” → “You don’t have to wear a uniform on Sports Day.”
  • Tuzaklar: duyuru “No…” derken “can” içeren seçenek ya da bir şey yalnızca gerekli değilken “mustn’t” içeren seçenek.

Tipik hatalar ve doğruları

“can”, “must” ve “mustn’t” sonrasında fiil ne “to” ne de -s alır. Yalnızca “have to” kalıbı “to”yu korur; he, she ve it ile “has to” olur. Yazını kontrol ederken bunları ara (okun solunda hata, sağında doğrusu). İlk satıra dikkat: yasak bir şey için “don’t have to” değil, “mustn’t” gerekir.

  • “No running! You don’t have to run.” → “No running! You mustn’t run.”
  • “You must to be on time.” → “You must be on time.”
  • “She have to take the bus.” → “She has to take the bus.”
  • “Yesterday we must stay late.” → “Yesterday we had to stay late.”

Alıştırma: yeni bir öğrenciye beş tavsiye

Bu bir sınav görevi değil, bir alıştırma. Okulunda yeni olan biri için en az üç farklı başlangıçla beş tavsiye yaz; birinde “don’t have to” olsun. Önce bizim örneğimiz, sonra 10 dakikalık bir rutin:

  • “1 You must be at school by 8.30. 2 You can borrow library books. 3 You mustn’t eat in the computer room. 4 You don’t have to wear a uniform on Fridays. 5 Always pack your bag the night before.”
  • 8–10. dakika: Konuşma Bölüm 1’deki gibi sesli cevap ver: “Tell me something about your school.”

“mustn’t” ile “don’t have to” arasındaki fark nedir?

“mustn’t” bir şeyin yasak olduğunu söyler: “You mustn’t run.” “Koşma!” demektir. “don’t have to” gerekli olmadığını söyler: “You don’t have to run.” istersen yürüyebileceğin anlamına gelir.

“must” ile “have to” aynı şey mi?

Olumlu cümlede neredeyse aynı. Kurallarda ve tabelalarda “must” sık görülür; konuşmada “have to” daha yaygındır. Geçmişte ikisi de “had to” olur.

Okulda İngilizce nasıl izin istenir?

“Can I…?” de: “Can I open the window?” Bir kuralı sormak için “Are we allowed to…?” kullan. “May I…?” daha kibardır.
