At the airport, a woman reads her receipts while a man lifts a tagged suitcase onto the belt.

The message at the wrong gate

At the airport, Maya reads her receipts while Owen lifts a tagged suitcase onto the belt.

The message at the wrong gate

We had been travelling for twelve hours when my phone suddenly displayed a message from an unknown number: “Your passport is at gate 6.” I checked my bag twice. The passport had definitely gone.

I ran back through the terminal, but gate 6 was nearly empty. A cleaner was waiting beside a blue seat. She had found the passport after I had moved to another gate, yet the airline desk had refused to announce my full name publicly. Instead, she had photographed the flight number on the boarding pass inside my passport and asked the desk to send a protected message.

Fortunately, I reached the new gate just before boarding closed. At the end of the flight, I wrote to thank her. In the end, the airport changed its lost-document procedure so staff could send secure alerts immediately without revealing passenger details.

“We had been travelling for twelve hours when a message arrived: my passport was at gate 6. I had left it there. Because the desk would not announce names, the cleaner who found it asked staff to message me. I boarded just in time. Later, the airport changed its rules.”

I checked my bag twice. The passport had definitely gone.”
Fortunately, I reached the new gate just before boarding closed.”

The gate changed, I ran, and the door closed.”
Passengers were boarding when the alarm sounded.”
The crew discovered that a sensor had failed.”
They had been waiting for three hours when a gate was assigned.”
  • لا يُستخدم المستمر مع أفعال الحالة مثل “know”، فنقول “She had known about the connection”، لا “had been knowing”.

“so” و“such”: أظهِر النتيجة

  • “so” تليها صفة أو ظرف: “The announcement was so unclear that half the queue moved.”
  • “so much” مع الأسماء غير المعدودة، و“so many” مع الجمع: “There was so much fog that the runway closed.”
  • “such a” تليها صفة ثم اسم مفرد: “It was such a tight connection that I ran.”
  • “such” تليها صفة ثم اسم جمع أو غير معدود: “We experienced such severe turbulence that service stopped.”

تستخدم العربية كلمة “نهاية” في “في نهاية الرصيف” وفي “في النهاية” معًا، أما الإنجليزية فتفرّق بين “at the end” و“in the end”:

  • “hard” (بجهد) و“hardly” (بالكاد): “I worked hard but had hardly slept.”
  • “late” (متأخرًا) و“lately” (مؤخرًا): “The train arrived late, and delays have increased lately.”
  • “near” (قرب) و“nearly” (تقريبًا): “The hotel is near the terminal, and it is nearly full.”
  • “at the end” (عند النقطة الأخيرة من شيء) و“in the end” (في النهاية، بعد صعوبة): “At the end of the platform, I found the bag; in the end, we caught the flight.”

  • الموضع مهم: “Clearly, he explained the delay.” تعني أن من الواضح أنه شرح الأمر، و“He explained the delay clearly.”

Owen Apparently, the bag was deliberately removed.

Maya Actually, staff moved it carefully after the label tore.

Owen I had hardly read the second note. I nearly accused the courier.

Maya Fortunately, you checked. The bag eventually reached baggage reclaim.

Owen Lately, I have been reacting too quickly to incomplete alerts.

Maya Ideally, the system should display the reason beside the movement.

  • “in the end of the flight”. قل “at the end of the flight”.
  • “such a severe turbulence”. كلمة “turbulence” غير معدودة: “such severe turbulence”.
  • “She checked carefully the tag.”

  • 3 دقائق: أضف نتائج باستخدام “so” و“so many” و“such a”.
  • دقيقتان: قل جملة لكل زوج: “hard/hardly” و“late/lately” و“near/nearly”.
Does a good story need a clear ending, or can it leave a question open?”

لحدث وقع قبل الخط الرئيسي في الماضي: “The crew discovered that a sensor had failed.”

“hard” تعني بجهد، و“hardly” تعني بالكاد: “I worked hard but had hardly slept.”

هل نقول “at the end” أم “in the end”؟

“at the end” هي النقطة الأخيرة من شيء، وغالبًا تأتي معها “of”، مثل: “at the end of the flight”. أما “in the end” فتعني في النهاية: “In the end, we caught the flight.”
