TOEIC Listening Part 4(Talks)에서는 한 사람이 음성 메시지, 안내 방송, 담화를 들려주고, 여러분은 시험지에 인쇄된 세 문제에 답합니다. 문제는 주로 누구를 위한 담화인지, 왜 하는지, 무엇이 바뀌었는지, 청자가 다음에 무엇을 해야 하는지를 묻습니다. 이전 계획과 새 계획을 구분하고, 그대로인 정보는 바꾸지 말고, 필수 행동과 선택적 도움을 구별하세요. 이 글은 B1 이상의 수험생을 위한 것입니다.

대상과 목적

화자는 보통 처음에 대상과 목적을 말합니다. “This is a collection update for customers who ordered seedling trays”라는 첫 문장이 둘 다 알려 줍니다. 목적을 묻는 문제의 오답은 배경 정보를 되풀이하는 경우가 많습니다. 바닥 수리는 정문이 닫힌 이유를 설명할 뿐입니다. 놓치지 말아야 할 첫마디:

“This message is for…”, “Attention, all passengers…”: 대상.
“I’m calling about…”, “I’d like to remind everyone…”: 목적.
“Welcome to those joining us for the first time”: 더 좁은 대상.

이전, 지금, 그대로

변경 안내에는 세 층이 있습니다. 이전 계획, 새 계획, 그리고 그대로인 것입니다. 오답은 이전 계획을 되풀이하거나 화자가 유지한 정보를 바꾸는 경우가 많습니다. 이유도 출제됩니다. “Because heavy rain is expected”는 “Why was the collection moved?”의 답입니다.

이전: “originally”, “was scheduled for”. 여기서는 목요일, 야외.
지금: “will now”, “has been moved to”, “instead”. 여기서는 금요일, 온실 안.
그대로: “remain”, “has not changed”, “still”. 여기서는 9시부터 1시까지의 수령 시간과 주문 번호.

필수, 조건부, 선택?

“What are listeners asked to do?”와 “What does the speaker offer?”는 다른 질문입니다. 필수 행동은 요청이나 규칙으로, 흔히 마감과 함께 나오고, 선택적 도움은 더 부드럽게 표현됩니다. 조건이 붙는 행동도 있습니다. 금요일에 올 수 없는 고객만 답장합니다. 한국어 ‘까지’는 마감과 지속을 모두 나타내지만 영어는 둘을 나눕니다. “by Wednesday evening”은 늦어도 수요일 저녁까지라는 마감이고, “until”은 어느 시점까지 계속되는 상태를 말합니다.

이 음성 메시지를 나눠 보세요. “Please collect your new laptop from the IT desk by Thursday. If you’d like help moving your files, you can book a short session.”

필수: “Please…”, “You need to…”. 여기서는 목요일까지 노트북을 받아 가는 것.
조건부: “If…, please…”. 조건에 맞는 청자만 행동합니다.
선택: “If you’d like…”, “Feel free to…”. 여기서는 파일 이전 세션.

변경과 규칙의 문법

마지막 줄에 주의하세요. “must not”은 금지이고, “don’t have to”는 의무가 없다는 뜻일 뿐입니다. 한국어의 ‘~하면 안 된다’와 ‘~하지 않아도 된다’의 차이와 같습니다.

“The meeting has been moved to Room 4.” 현재완료 수동태: 변경은 이미 끝났고, 누가 했는지는 중요하지 않습니다.
“The main hall is being redecorated.” 현재진행 수동태: 진행 중인 작업으로, 변경의 이유인 경우가 많습니다.
“Monday’s training moves to the new workshop.” 예정된 변경을 나타내는 현재시제.
“You must sign the list”(필수), “You must not park here”(금지), “You don’t have to reply”(선택).

흔한 실수

점수를 잃게 만드는 습관입니다.

먼저 들었다는 이유로 이전 계획을 고르는 것.
화자가 유지한 정보, 예를 들어 수령 시간을 바꾸는 것.
선택적 도움을 필수 행동으로 여기는 것.
조건을 놓치는 것: “If Friday is impossible…”은 일부 청자에게만 해당합니다.
“don’t have to”를 “must not”의 뜻으로 이해하는 것.
