Two friends organize a small suitcase and equipment pouch before an early work trip.

“Waiting at the harbour. Just received the equipment list.” “Boat leaves at six. Meeting the instructor at five.”

  • “The boat leaves at six”와 “We’re leaving at six” 사이에서 망설이고, 믿을 수 있는 규칙을 원하는 분.

full sentence

Formal or careful writing normally includes the subject and necessary auxiliary verbs.

time must stay clear

Keep enough tense or time language to show whether an event is current, planned, or finished.

reference must stay clear

Do not omit a noun or pronoun if the reader could misunderstand what it refers to.

tone and reaction

Short reactions, punctuation, or symbols can express emotion, but the practical meaning must remain accessible.

The bag that travelled separately

Nadia was travelling to a three-day ceramics workshop on a small island. She normally checked a large suitcase, but the final boat accepted only compact luggage, so she borrowed a waterproof holdall. While she was packing, she assumed the studio provided protective aprons and wrapped only her camera. At the harbour, an instructor sent a late update: every participant needed an apron and closed shoes. Nadia did not have time to shop before boarding. Instead of missing the boat, she phoned the island’s hardware shop and asked whether it could hold suitable items for collection. The owner had boots but no aprons, so he contacted a nearby café that used washable kitchen aprons. Nadia collected both items after arrival and attended the first session. That evening, she added a shared equipment list to the group’s booking page. Future participants could now see what the venue supplied before they started packing.

constraint

What rule on the final boat affected Nadia’s luggage?

Find the sentence and say what she did because of it.

mistaken assumption

What did Nadia believe about the studio, and was she right?

Say what she packed because of this belief.

response

How did Nadia solve the problem without missing the boat?

Name the people who helped her.

system improvement

What did Nadia change for later participants?

Explain how this prevents the same problem.

A developed five-message model

evening before

Anticipation plus a confirmed arrangement

Bag finally packed. Taking the 06.40 train tomorrow, then meeting Jo at the harbour.

first morning

Current action plus a new complication

At the harbour now. Just learned we need closed shoes for the workshop.

second day

Resolved problem plus present experience

Local shop saved the day—wearing borrowed boots and making my first bowl.

last evening

Reflection plus remaining plan

Last evening here. Packing the finished bowl very carefully before dinner.

day after

Completed return plus consequence

Got home safely, but the bowl cracked in the car. Apparently I need another packing lesson!

Write the trip as it changes

Does each message tell the reader when the event is happening?

Yes. I used tomorrow, now, on day two, tonight, and just got home to keep the sequence clear.

A strong series develops one situation and keeps time, reference, and outcome clear.

  • Just realized…
  • Trying… next.
  • Problem solved.

All packed. Train leaves at 06.40 tomorrow; meeting Dan at the station at six.”
Arrived! Just realized I’ve packed the wrong adaptor.”
Problem solved: the guesthouse lent me one. Walking to the lighthouse today.”
Last evening here. Ferry leaves at 08.15, so packing after dinner.”
Back home. Note for next time: check the plug type before packing!”

친구에게 보내는 메시지에서는 뻔한 주어와 조동사(“I”, “we”, “I’m”, “I’ve”)를 자주 생략해요.

I’m waiting at the harbour, and I’ve just received the equipment list.”
  • 줄인 문장: “Waiting at the harbour. Just received the equipment list.”
  • 시간을 분명하게: “Boat leaves at six. Meeting the instructor at five.”
  • 가리키는 대상을 분명하게: “Bought the boots; collecting them from the hardware shop now.”
Charger left at home, of course! Borrowing one from reception.”

I usually pack the night before.”
I’m rolling up the shirts; we’re staying with friends this week.”
We’re meeting the guide at the port at 17.20.”
The ferry leaves at 07.20, and check-in closes at 06.50.”
  • 앎, 소유, 선호, 필요를 나타내는 동사는 지금 이 순간의 일이어도 보통 현재형을 써요: “I know the route, and we need an adaptor.”

Maya Why are you unpacking the towel? You usually take one on coastal trips.

Owen The guesthouse provides towels, and the morning ferry isn’t running tomorrow because the crew are training.

Maya So what are we doing?

Owen We’re taking the evening crossing. It leaves at 18.10, and we’re meeting the technician at the port at 17.20.

They’re out of adaptors.” “The sun hats have sold out.” “I’m looking for a waterproof case.”

  • “I’m knowing the way.” “know”는 상태 동사예요: “I know the way.”
  • “We meet the guide at nine tomorrow.” 내 약속이라면 “We’re meeting the guide at nine tomorrow.”
  • “Leaving at six.”
  • “Talked to the hotel and the shop. It’s closed.” 명사를 다시 쓰세요: “The shop’s closed.”

“Which forgotten item would cause you the most trouble, and what would you do?”

“Waiting at the harbour.” “Boat leaves at six.”

“The ferry leaves at 18.10.” “We’re meeting the technician at 17.20.”

“I think”와 “I’m thinking”은 어떻게 다른가요?

“I think the case is too heavy.” “I’m thinking of”는 무언가를 고려하고 있다는 뜻이에요. “We’re thinking of taking fewer clothes.”
