영어로 방 묘사하는 법 (B1): 위치 전치사, 형용사, 네 문단 구성

Workers compare differently coloured areas during an office design trial.

“A desk stands against the green wall.” “not as comfortable as” 같은 비교 표현은 묘사를 의견으로 바꿔 줘요.

  • 아직 이르다면: “on”, “in”, “next to”와 “big”, “small”, “bright” 같은 기본 형용사가 아직 낯설다면 먼저 집의 현재와 과거를 묘사하는 연습부터 하세요.
  • 너무 쉽다면: 정확한 전치사와 비교 표현을 자연스럽게 쓴다면, 사진을 묘사하면서 보이는 것과 추측을 구분하는 연습으로 넘어가세요.

in / inside

within a room, container, or enclosed space

Maya is standing in the green area, and a small plant grows inside a white pot.

on / above

touching a surface; higher than something without necessarily touching it

A laptop is on the desk, and green lamps hang above the tables.

at / in the corner

at identifies a point; in the corner identifies the space where surfaces meet

Owen is standing at a table, and a tall plant stands in the corner by the window.

from / with

from marks origin or viewpoint; with introduces an accompanying feature or covering

From Maya's desk, you can see the yellow area; the office chair is covered with black mesh.

against / along / in the middle of

touching a vertical surface; following a length; occupying the central area

A desk stands against the green wall, windows run along the back of the room, and a woman moves a chair in the middle of the office.

대화

maya The short questionnaire says people who choose deep blue value calm routines. Does that sound accurate for your team?

owen It says that we prefer predictable work, but that is only partly accurate. We changed the launch plan three times last week.

maya So the label does not match the evidence completely. What about the orange result?

owen According to the result, orange suggests social confidence. That fits our host, but colour choice alone cannot prove personality.

maya I agree. We can use the results to start a conversation, then ask for real examples.

owen That is more accurate than treating the test as a diagnosis.

문장 형태

What should the final paragraph add?

It should evaluate the room and explain why its details matter, not merely repeat the furniture list.

Clear organization and reference let the reader construct both the room and its personal meaning.

  • against
  • above
  • inside
  • from
  • comfortable
  • spacious
  • not as…as
  • the darker one

Model: The map room

1. My favourite room is the small map room at my aunt’s guesthouse. It used to be a storage room, but she offered it to me as a temporary office when I started working remotely. I return to it because it feels separate from the busy house without feeling lonely.

2. The room is narrow but surprisingly spacious near the window. Its walls are a muted blue-grey, while the window frame is cream. Afternoon light comes from the west, so the colour becomes warmer as the day ends. From the desk, I can see the roofs around the market square.

3. A simple oak desk stands against the longest wall, with two shallow shelves above it. Old walking maps are kept inside labelled folders, not displayed, because the patterns would make the room look messy. In the corner there is a comfortable green chair, and a small brass lamp sits on a table beside it. A faded red rug lies in the middle of the floor and makes the restrained colours less formal.

4. The room is useful rather than luxurious. Everything has a clear purpose, yet the maps connect my present work with family journeys. That balance is why this quiet room remains more desirable to me than the larger rooms downstairs.

Help me picture it

Adjective position and comparison

before a noun; no plural -s

An adjective normally comes before its noun and never takes a plural ending.

They installed powerful computers in a quiet room, not powerfuls computers.

regular comparison

Use -er/-est with short adjectives; final spelling may change.

The green booth is quieter, but the blue booth is the busiest.

more/most and irregular forms

Long adjectives use more/most; good, bad, and far have irregular forms.

The farthest desk has the best view but the worst connection.

not as…as

Use not as + adjective + as to say one thing has a lower degree of a quality.

The yellow chairs are not as comfortable as the green ones.

less/least

Less and least work with adjectives of any length.

The open area is less peaceful, and the kitchen is the least suitable place for calls.

two-syllable -er/-est

These common two-syllable adjectives can take -er and -est.

A narrower table creates a quieter, simpler layout.

a bit / much + comparative

A bit marks a small difference; much marks a large one.

Zone B is a bit brighter but much more stressful.

one / ones or adjective alone

Use one/ones after an adjective to replace a countable noun; an adjective can stand alone when the understood noun is a substance or category.

Of the lamps, choose the white ones; for wall paint, I prefer white.

방을 네 문단으로 묘사하는 구성

쓰기 과제는 네 문단, 140~180단어예요. 문단마다 역할이 하나씩 있어요. 위의 예시 글도 이 구성을 따라요.

  • 어떤 방이고 왜 골랐는지: “My favourite room is the small map room at my aunt’s guesthouse.”
  • 전체적인 인상(크기, 색, 빛, 전망): “Afternoon light comes from the west, so the colour becomes warmer as the day ends.”
  • 물건과 정확한 위치: “A simple oak desk stands against the longest wall, with two shallow shelves above it.”
  • 또 다른 목록이 아닌 내 평가: “The room is useful rather than luxurious.”

헷갈림을 없애는 위치 전치사

한국어 “위”는 닿아 있는 경우와 떨어져 있는 경우를 모두 가리켜서, 영어의 “on”과 “above”를 구분하지 않아요. 영어에서는 위치를 정확히 보여 주는 단어를 골라야 해요.

  • “in”과 “inside”: “inside”는 무언가 안에 들어 있다는 점을 강조해요. “A small plant grows inside a white pot.”
  • “on”과 “above”: “on”은 표면에 닿아 있고, “above”는 보통 닿지 않고 더 높이 있어요. “A laptop is on the desk, and green lamps hang above the tables.”
  • “at”과 “in the corner”: “at a table”은 한 지점이고, “in the corner”는 두 벽이 만나는 공간이에요. “on the corner”는 보통 길모퉁이에 써요.
  • “from”과 “with”: “from”은 보는 위치를, “with”는 특징을 더해요. “From the desk, I can see the roofs around the market square.” “The office chair is covered with black mesh.”
  • “against”, “along”, “in the middle of”: “A desk stands against the green wall, windows run along the back of the room, and a woman moves a chair in the middle of the office.”

형용사: 위치와 비교

형용사는 방에 개성을 주고, 비교 표현은 묘사를 의견으로 바꿔요. 한국어 “더”를 그대로 옮겨 “more bigger”라고 하기 쉬운데, 짧은 형용사는 “-er”만 붙이면 돼요.

  • 명사 앞에 오고 복수형이 없어요: “powerful computers in a quiet room”. “powerfuls computers”는 틀려요.
  • 짧은 형용사는 “-er/-est”, 긴 형용사는 “more/most”, “good”, “bad”, “far”는 불규칙: “The farthest desk has the best view but the worst connection.”
  • 더 낮은 정도를 말하는 “not as … as”: “The yellow chairs are not as comfortable as the green ones.”
  • 길이에 상관없이 쓰는 “less”, “least”: “The open area is less peaceful, and the kitchen is the least suitable place for calls.”
  • 작은 차이는 “a bit”, 큰 차이는 “much”: “Zone B is a bit brighter but much more stressful.”

꼬리표가 아니라 근거로 평가하기

마지막 문단에는 근거를 댈 수 있는 평가가 필요해요. 위 대화에서 두 사람은 색깔 설문이 한 팀에 대해 말하는 내용을 따져 봐요. 그 표현을 내 방에 빌려 써 보세요.

  • “That is only partly accurate.”
  • “The label does not match the evidence completely.”
  • “That fits our host, but colour choice alone cannot prove personality.”
  • 그다음 평가의 근거를 대세요: “Everything has a clear purpose, yet the maps connect my present work with family journeys.”
나에게 맞는 방법으로 이 단원 배우기

쓰기 전에 이야기해 볼 질문

먼저 소리 내어 답해 보세요. 가장 좋은 답이 네 번째 문단이 돼요.

  • “Which room do you return to most, and what makes it different?”
  • “Is a bigger room always better?” “not as … as”나 “less”로 두 방을 비교해 보세요.
  • “Can a colour change how you feel in a room, or is that just a label?”

자주 하는 실수

초안에서 다음을 확인하세요.

  • 위치 없는 목록: “There is a desk, a chair and a lamp.” 물건마다 자리를 정해 주세요.
  • 방 안인데 “on the corner”. “in the corner”라고 하세요.
  • “comfortables chairs”, “more quieter”.

“-er”, “not as … as”, “less”를 하나씩.

“A laptop is on the desk.” “above”는 보통 닿지 않고 더 높이 있다는 뜻이에요. “Green lamps hang above the tables.”

“in the corner”와 “on the corner” 중 무엇이 맞나요?

방 안이라면 “in the corner”예요. “A tall plant stands in the corner by the window.” “on the corner”는 보통 길이나 건물의 바깥 모퉁이에 써요. “The café is on the corner.”

영어로 방은 어떻게 묘사하나요?

네 단계로 써요. 어떤 방이고 왜 골랐는지, 크기와 색과 빛과 전망, 정확한 위치의 물건들, 그리고 그 방이 왜 중요한지요. “against”, “above” 같은 전치사와 “not as … as” 같은 비교 표현이 묘사를 분명하고 개인적으로 만들어 줘요.
