Two friends compare returnable lunch boxes in a café, with a return locker behind them.

The returnable box that increased waste

Maya and Owen compare returnable lunch boxes in a café, with a return locker behind them.

A café introduced returnable lunch boxes and expected waste to fall. Customers paid a deposit, but the return desk closed before many offices finished work. Most boxes stayed in desk drawers, so the café bought more containers while still washing the few returned ones. Maya studied the timing rather than blaming customers. She moved returns to an all-day locker and gave each box a visible due date. Owen measured purchases, returns, washing energy, and damaged stock. Within six weeks, return rates rose from 38 to 86 percent and total packaging purchases fell. The reusable product succeeded only after the service fitted the users’ routine.

Basically, mixed materials block recycling.”
I’d like to propose a six-week trial of returnable lunch boxes.”
The hardest part will be getting the boxes back.”
We’ll count purchases, returns and damaged boxes every week.”
What would make this work in your team?”

“Apparently, the supplier can replace plastic film.”
“Obviously, a claim still needs evidence.”
“Basically, mixed materials block recycling.”
“The trial eventually cut waste by a third.”

Maya Apparently, reusable boxes increased purchases in week one.

Owen That sounds awful, but the reason was the return desk, not the box itself.

Maya Exactly. The locker eventually raised returns to eighty-six percent.

Owen Oh wow! Basically, convenience changed the environmental result.

Maya Yes, although we should publish the washing-energy figure before calling it a complete success.

  • よい知らせ:“Oh wow!”, “That sounds pretty cool.”, “That’s amazing.”
  • 心配な知らせ:“Isn’t that awful?”, “It’s depressing.”, “That’s very scary.” “Isn’t that awful?”
That sounds pretty cool. How was it measured?” “That’s very scary. What evidence shows the scale?”

The boxes were a complete success.”
Yes, although we should publish the washing-energy figure before calling it a complete success.”
  • あいまいな基準:“We’ll see if people like it.” 検証できる基準:“We’ll count how many boxes come back each week for six weeks.”
  • 主張を根拠の大きさに合わせる表現:“so far”, “in this trial”, “the figures suggest”。

  • “Should customers pay a deposit for reusable packaging?”
  • “Who should do most to cut waste: customers, businesses or governments?”
  • “When is it fair to call an environmental change a success?”

  • “That sounds like awful.” “That sounds like a good plan.”
  • “It’s depressed.”
  • “Eventually, thank you all for listening.”
People will feel better about waste.”

日本語の「〜らしい」に近い使い方です:“Apparently, the supplier can replace plastic film.”

“eventually”は時間や苦労を経て「最終的に」という意味です:“The trial eventually cut waste by a third.”

“I’d like to propose …”と“We’ll know it worked if …”
