At reception, a woman sits behind the counter looking at a form, a man stands holding a box, and another woman stands beside a closed door.

Look before listening

At reception, Maya sits behind the counter looking at a form, Owen stands holding a box, and another woman stands beside a closed door.

How can I describe Maya precisely?

Maya is seated behind the counter and is checking a form.

Her seated position, the counter and the form are visible. We do not need to invent a reason for her visit.

  • is seated
  • behind the counter
  • is checking a form

Three evidence checks

  • Person: who can you see?
  • Action or state: what do the hands and body show?
  • Position: what is beside, behind or near the person?

Avoid a guess

  • A picture may show what someone is holding.
  • It cannot prove why a person is visiting or how they feel.

From the whole scene to details

In an equipment room, Maya kneels beside an open box holding a rolled mat, Owen stands beside a shelf holding a green folder, and another adult holds a clipboard in the background.

How can I organise a short description?

Three adults are in an equipment room. On the left, Maya is kneeling beside an open box and holding a rolled mat. On the right, Owen is standing beside a shelf with a green folder in his hands. In the background, another adult is looking at a clipboard.

The opening gives the whole scene. The remaining sentences guide the listener through visible details; they do not guess the people’s jobs or emotions.

A flexible plan

  • One sentence for the overall scene
  • Two or three useful details in a clear order
  • A short final detail if time allows

Useful location language

  • In the foreground: closer to the viewer
  • In the background: farther from the viewer
  • Beside: next to something

Prepare, speak, refine

In an equipment room, Maya kneels beside an open box holding a rolled mat, Owen stands beside a shelf holding a green folder, and another adult holds a clipboard in the background.

Preparation outline

  • Overall scene
  • First chosen detail
  • Second chosen detail
  • Optional final detail

Speaking target

  • 45 seconds to prepare
  • 30 seconds to speak
  • Then feedback and a second attempt

Both cues, one sentence

In an equipment room, Maya kneels beside an open box holding a rolled mat, Owen stands beside a shelf holding a green folder, and another adult holds a clipboard in the background.

May I change the forms and order of the cues?

Yes. Use a form of both cues in one grammatical sentence that fits the picture.

Both cues matter, but the sentence does not need to repeat a fixed model.

Three writing checks

  • Use a form of both supplied words or phrases.
  • Write one complete grammatical sentence.
  • Describe something the picture supports.

Model 1: hold / mat

  • Maya is holding a rolled mat.
  • Hold changes to is holding; mat is still used.

Model 2: shelf / while

  • Owen is beside the shelf while Maya holds a mat.
  • Maya holds a mat while Owen is beside the shelf.
  • Both orders use both cues in one sentence.

Check the whole sentence

In an equipment room, Maya kneels beside an open box holding a rolled mat, Owen stands beside a shelf holding a green folder, and another adult holds a clipboard in the background.

Look at the picture while you answer the questions.

  1. Cues: stand / while. Which sentence passes all three checks?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

Owen is standing beside the shelf while Maya holds a mat.

B has a grammatical verb, uses a form of stand and while, and describes visible simultaneous facts. A has incorrect verb grammar; C omits while.

  2. Cues: hold / clipboard. Which sentence passes all three checks?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

The man in the background is holding a clipboard.

A uses holding and clipboard and identifies the correct person. B assigns the clipboard to Maya, who holds a mat. C is a true statement but does not use a form of hold.

Write, explain, revise

In an equipment room, Maya kneels beside an open box holding a rolled mat, Owen stands beside a shelf holding a green folder, and another adult holds a clipboard in the background.

Choose two pairs

  • beside / box
  • folder / while
  • mat / hold

Your own writing space

  • Use paper or your own notes.
  • The screen is a reference, not an editable answer box.

Una fórmula útil: “You can see a man with a box, but you can’t tell what is in it.”

  • “A man is holding a box”: una acción que ocurre ahora; un solo is sirve para dos verbos: “is holding a phone and walking”.
  • “Two people are standing”, pero “nobody is sitting”: nobody va con el verbo en singular.
  • “Chairs are stacked” o “have been stacked”: un estado que se ve.
  • “Chairs are being stacked”: alguien las está apilando ahora.

Guía a quien te escucha

Maya Start with the counter in the background. The person behind it is checking a form.

Owen Where should I look next?

Maya Look to the right, near the closed door.

Prepara cuatro notas breves, no un guion, y presenta cualquier impresión como tal: “It looks like a busy morning.” Un modelo:

“Three adults are in an equipment room. On the left, a woman is kneeling beside an open box. On the right, a man is holding a green folder. In the background, someone is looking at a clipboard.”

  • “In the foreground” (lo más cercano) y “in the background” (lo más lejano).
  • “Beside” o “next to” (nunca “next the shelf”), “behind”, “in front of”.
  • “In the picture”, no “on the picture”.

  • hold / mat: “A woman is holding a rolled mat.”
  • stand / while: “A man is standing by the shelf while a woman holds a mat”, o al revés.
  • “A man stand by the shelf while…” falla en la gramática.
  • hold / clipboard: “The man has a clipboard” falla porque falta hold.

  • Omitir el sujeto o el verbo is: en español dices “está junto a la puerta”, pero en inglés necesitas “It is next to the door” o “There is a printer next to the door”.
