Two adult learners work together at a university study table.

Reconstruct with guided endings

At a neighbourhood repair café, volunteers first exa____ each broken object. They keep a written rec___ of the problem so that another helper can follow the work. Visitors also learn how to prev___ similar damage in the future.

  1. Complete exa____ in the paragraph.

    exa______

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

    mine

Examine is a verb meaning inspect; volunteers examine each object. Example and exactly do not fit this verb position.

  2. Complete rec___ in the paragraph.

    rec______

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

    ord

A written record stores details of the problem. Recipe and recent do not match both the surviving letters and this meaning.

  3. Complete prev___ in the paragraph.

    prev______

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

    ent

Prevent damage means stop it happening; preview and prevail do not express that action.

Reconstruct without options

A small neighbourhood group opened a shelf where residents could exchange household items. At first, people left objects without any information, so visitors were unsure whether they worked. The organisers introduced a simple sys___ for labelling each item. Owners now des_____ its condition and mention any missing parts. A volunteer che___ the labels each morning and moves damaged objects to a separate box. This does not gua______ that every item will last, but it gives visitors clearer information. The group also asks people to ret___ anything they decide not to use, so another neighbour has the opportunity to try it.

The organisers introduced a simple system for labelling each item. Owners now describe its condition and mention any missing parts. A volunteer checks the labels each morning and moves damaged objects to a separate box. This does not guarantee that every item will last, but it gives visitors clearer information. The group also asks people to return anything they decide not to use, so another neighbour has the opportunity to try it.

Cross-check a notice and a reply — worked strategy

Two adult learners work together at a university study table.

Example: A notice says visitors need a booking reference. A personal reply confirms that a printed or digital copy is acceptable. The reply explains the form of proof; it does not remove the need for proof. Read both levels of information before deciding what someone should do.

Community tool library — collection update

From Monday 14 September, reserved tools will be collected at the side desk rather than the main counter. Opening hours remain 4–7 p.m. on weekdays. Wait for a message saying that your item is ready before travelling; a reservation confirmation alone is not a collection notice. If you cannot collect an item within two working days of the ready message, reply to that message to request an extension. Extensions depend on whether someone else is waiting.

Reply from the library to Alex: Your drill is ready today, Tuesday 15 September. We can hold it through Thursday evening. You asked whether your colleague can collect it: that is possible if they show the collection code and your name. The code is in this message. Please do not share your account password.

  1. What has changed?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

The place where reserved tools are collected

The update moves collection to the side desk and explicitly keeps hours unchanged.

  2. Which message tells a member to travel?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

A message that the item is ready

The notice distinguishes a ready message from a reservation confirmation.

  3. How long will Alex’s drill be held under the stated arrangement?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

    Through Thursday evening

The personal reply expressly states Thursday evening.

  1. What must Alex’s colleague show?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

The collection code and Alex’s name

The reply gives those two requirements and warns against password sharing.

  2. What affects whether an extension is available?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

Whether another person is waiting for the item

Extension availability depends on another waiting borrower.

  3. What is the purpose of the personal reply?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

Confirm availability and answer a collection question

The reply confirms the drill is ready and explains collection by a colleague.

Your open task

  • Explain which details come from the general notice and which from Alex’s reply.
  • Compose a polite request for an extension using an imagined reason.
  • State one habit that prevents a misleading inference.

Separate a result from a broad claim — worked strategy

Two adult learners work together at a university study table.

Example: A class recalls more facts after one illustrated handout, but the handout also uses simpler wording. The result supports a benefit from that version; it does not isolate pictures as the only cause. Name what was actually compared before claiming why the result occurred.

Find the supported meaning

A teaching team wanted to know whether short headings could help students use an online course guide. In a small classroom project, twenty students from one class were randomly given one of two versions of the same guide. The versions contained identical sentences, but one divided the information under descriptive headings. Students then looked for information about attendance, assignment deadlines and feedback. Those with headings located the deadline more quickly on average. The groups took similar amounts of time to find the attendance rule.

The team suggested that headings may help when readers can connect a question with a clear category. However, the results did not show that headings improve every reading task. Only one guide and one group of students were studied, and faster searching does not necessarily mean deeper understanding. A later project could use different guides and ask students to explain the rules after finding them. That would help distinguish quick location of information from understanding what it requires.

  1. What is the main focus of the passage?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

A limited investigation of how headings affect information finding

The project compares two versions of one guide and reports a limited search benefit.

  2. What stayed the same across the two guide versions?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

    The sentences containing the information

The passage states that both versions contained identical sentences.

  3. Which result was reported?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

The heading group found the deadline more quickly on average

Deadline finding was faster; comprehension was not measured as improved.

  1. What does distinguish mean in the final sentence?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

Recognise a difference between two things

The proposed work separates quick finding from understanding.

  2. Which conclusion is NOT supported?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

The findings establish that headings help every reader on every task

The authors explicitly limit generalisation beyond one guide and class.

  3. Why ask students to explain the rules in a later project?

    Mostrar respuesta y explicación

To examine understanding as well as search speed

Explanation would test meaning beyond finding the relevant location.

  • “a simple sys___ for labelling each item”: system, un sustantivo después de “a simple”.
  • “Owners now des_____ its condition”: describe, sin -s porque el sujeto es plural.
  • “A volunteer che___ the labels each morning”: checks, porque en presente simple el verbo lleva -s con un sujeto en tercera persona del singular.
  • “This does not gua______ that every item will last”: guarantee, la forma base después de “does not”.
  • “asks people to ret___ anything”: return, la forma base después de “to”.

  • Aviso: “If you cannot collect an item within two working days of the ready message, reply to that message to request an extension. Extensions depend on whether someone else is waiting.”
  • Respuesta: “Your drill is ready today, Tuesday 15 September. We can hold it through Thursday evening.”

  • Resultado: “Those with headings located the deadline more quickly on average. The groups took similar amounts of time to find the attendance rule.”
  • Límite: “Only one guide and one group of students were studied, and faster searching does not necessarily mean deeper understanding.”
  • No respaldado, es decir, la respuesta a una pregunta NOT: “The findings establish that headings help every reader on every task.”
  • Vocabulario: en “distinguish quick location of information from understanding what it requires”, distinguish significa diferenciar dos cosas.

Errores frecuentes

  • Mantener la -s después de “does not”.
  • Leer may como will, u on average como always.

  • Explica: di por qué la respuesta correcta es correcta: “The gap follows ‘does not’, so it needs the base form ‘guarantee’.”
  • Separa: escribe el resultado y su límite en dos oraciones: “The heading group found the deadline faster on average. However, only one guide was tested.”
  • Transfiere: escribe una petición cortés basada en un aviso: “Would it be possible to collect the drill on Friday instead? I have to work late on Thursday.”

Siguiente paso
