ما الفرق بين “mustn’t” و“don’t have to”؟

A woman organizes audience entry at an arts centre while a man notices an urgent missed call and a technician waits by sound equipment.

دليل B1 لـ“have to” و“must” و“mustn’t” و“don’t have to” و“should” و“ought to”، مع تدريب على طلب استثناء محدود من قاعدة استخدام الهاتف بأدب والاتفاق على شرطين.

لتطلب استثناءً بالإنجليزية، اقبل القاعدة أولًا، واذكر سببًا محددًا واحدًا، ثم اقترح بديلًا محدودًا بشروط: “I understand the rule, but I must be reachable tonight. Could reception keep my phone?” وراء ذلك أربعة معانٍ: “have to” و“must” للضرورة، و“mustn’t” للمنع، و“don’t have to” لعدم الضرورة، و“should” و“ought to” للنصيحة.

  • البالغون في المستوى المتوسط الذين يعرفون “must” و“have to” لكنهم غير متأكدين لماذا يختلف معنى “mustn’t” عن “don’t have to” إلى هذا الحد.
  • ما زال الوقت مبكرًا: إذا كنت ما زلت تقول “I must to go” أو لا تستطيع بعد تكوين السؤال “Do you have to…?”

maya Before you go in, you have to leave your phone in the secure box. We had two complaints after last week's screening.

owen I understand the rule, but the care home may call about my father tonight. I must be reachable.

maya You mustn't take a call inside, and the phone shouldn't even vibrate near the seats.

owen Could reception keep it? You don't have to interrupt the film. Someone could quietly come and get me.

maya That could work. You ought to give reception your seat number and the caller's number.

owen Fine. I'll switch off every other notification, and I won't swipe through messages during the film.

maya Then you don't have to miss the screening. I'll tell the duty manager why we made the exception.

Do I have to leave my phone in the box?

Normally, yes. You mustn't use it in the auditorium, but reception can hold it and alert you quietly.

Acknowledge the shared purpose before requesting a limited, practical exception.

  • I understand the rule.
  • Could we make an exception?
  • That seems reasonable.

يأتي بعد كل هذه الصيغ الفعل في صيغته الأساسية، ولا تبقى “to” إلا في “have to” و“ought to”.

  • ضروري، غالبًا بسبب قاعدة خارجية: “have to”، مثل: “Audience members have to keep devices silent.” وتُكوَّن الأسئلة بـ“do”، مثل: “Do I have to leave my phone in the box?”
  • ضروري، غالبًا من وجهة نظر المتكلم: “must”، مثل: “I must be reachable tonight.”
  • ممنوع: “mustn’t”، مثل: “Guests mustn’t answer calls inside the auditorium.”
  • غير ضروري، أي أن الخيار لك: “don’t have to”، مثل: “You don’t have to switch your phone off if reception keeps it.”
  • نصيحة، أخف من القاعدة: “should” و“shouldn’t” و“ought to”، مثل: “You ought to give reception your seat number.”

“mustn’t” أم “don’t have to”: الثنائي الذي يقلب المعنى

في النفي يفترق “must” و“have to”: فصيغة “mustn’t” منع، و“don’t have to” ينفي الضرورة، و“shouldn’t” مجرد فكرة سيئة.

  • “You shouldn’t take a call there.”
  • “You mustn’t take a call there.”
  • “You don’t have to take a call there.”

I understand the rule.”
The care home may call about my father tonight.”
Could we make an exception? Could reception keep my phone?”
I’ll switch off every other notification, and I won’t check messages during the film.”

  • “You don’t have to use your phone inside” للمنع. قل “You mustn’t use your phone inside.”
  • “I must to leave early.” لا تأتي “to” بعد “must”، والصواب: “I must leave early.” لكن “ought” تحتفظ بها: “You ought to give them your number.”
  • “Did you must wait?” ليس لـ“must” صيغة ماضٍ: “Did you have to wait?”
  • “I need my phone” تبدو مطالبة. ابدأ بـ“I understand the rule, but…”

I think there ought to be…”, “People mustn’t…, but…”, “You don’t have to…, unless…”.

  • “Should cinemas and restaurants make their own phone rules, or should people decide for themselves?”
  • “Is it fair for an employer to ban phones in meetings? Who should get an exception?”

  • دقيقتان: اكتب شرطين، أحدهما بـ“ought to” والآخر بـ“I won’t”.
