İngilizce pratiği

İngilizcede could mu, was able to mu? Geçmişteki yetenek ve tek seferlik başarı (C1+)

A woman points to a tactile control board while a man compares a broken light prototype with a delivery calendar.

C1+ (ileri artı) seviyesinde İngilizcede geçmişteki yetenek: could ne zaman doğrudur, tek bir başarı neden was able to ya da managed to ister, hangi olumsuz biçimler uygundur ve be able to, can’in eksik biçimlerini nasıl tamamlar.

Geçmişteki genel bir yetenek için could kullanın: “At university, she could repair almost any analogue device.” Belirli bir deneme başarıyla sonuçlandıysa was able to ya da managed to gerekir: “Despite the blackout, the team was able to finish the test.”

  • Akıcı konuşan ama bir şeyin gerçekten olduğunu anlatırken hâlâ “we could finish the test” diyen ileri seviyedeki yetişkinler.

Personal · a setback

Think of a setback that you or someone you know recovered from. Who or what helped in a way an outsider might not notice?

Useful: ‘Looking back, I couldn’t have… without…’ · ‘What people didn’t see was…’ · ‘It may sound odd, but…’

Big idea · effort and luck

How much of what people achieve is down to effort, and how much to circumstances beyond their control? Can we ever separate the two?

Useful: ‘It’s not a question of either… or…’ · ‘I’d put it down largely to…’ · ‘You could argue that…, but…’

What the comeback story leaves out

A woman points to a coastal trail map while three hikers listen, with a weather chart, a radio and a water bottle on the table.

What the comeback story leaves out

Every summer for eleven years, Ines Okafor ran sea-kayaking trips from a small harbour on the west coast. She could read the water better than almost anyone in the village, and returning clients would ask for her by name. Then, in the space of a single spring, the business fell apart. A landslide closed the only road to the harbour, her insurer disputed a claim for two damaged boats, and a wrist injury meant that she was unable to paddle for most of the season.

What happened next is the kind of story magazines love. With the road shut, Ines was able to persuade a fishing cooperative to carry her kayaks round the headland by boat. She switched from guiding to teaching, trained two young instructors, and by the following summer was running more trips than ever. When a regional newspaper wrote about her, the headline called her “unbreakable”. She has the cutting pinned above her desk, she says, “mainly as a warning”.

The warning is about the word itself. Comeback stories tend to present recovery as a quality of character: some people can bend without breaking, and others simply cannot. It is an appealing idea, and it may well contain some truth. Persistence matters; so does a willingness to look foolish while learning something new. But when Ines tells the story herself, character is only one element, and rarely the first. The cooperative happened to have a spare boat that month. Her sister could lend her money without asking for it back quickly. A former client who worked in insurance explained, patiently and for free, how to challenge the rejected claim.

None of this appears in the “unbreakable” version, and Ines thinks it is the whole point. “I may have worked hard, but I wasn’t the only one working,” she says. A neighbour whose café flooded in the same storm, she points out, was every bit as determined. He couldn’t find a lender, his landlord refused to wait, and the café closed within months. “He could have been the most determined man on the coast; it wouldn’t have saved the café. Nobody wrote a headline about him.”

There is, of course, another way to read all this. Critics of what they call “luck talk” argue that stressing circumstances can be just as misleading as stressing character. If success is mostly a matter of who happens to own a spare boat, why should anyone bother to persist? People who have come through real hardship can find it insulting to be told that they were merely fortunate. And it can’t have been luck alone that made Ines teach herself a new trade at forty-three while her wrist was still in a brace. The effort was real, even if the support was invisible.

The honest answer is probably that the two explanations need each other. Determination decides what a person does with an opportunity; circumstances decide whether the opportunity exists at all. The trouble with the heroic version is not that it praises effort, but that it quietly implies that everyone who failed to recover might have tried harder. That is a comfortable conclusion for anyone who has never been tested, and a cruel one for those who have.

Ines now runs a short course for small tourism businesses on planning for a bad season. Her first exercise is to list everyone who would help if the road closed tomorrow, and to be honest about which names are missing. “If the list is short, you might as well start building it now,” she tells them. “Nobody will be able to do it for you in the middle of a landslide.” When people ask whether she is proud of her comeback, she says yes, and then adds that she would like the word to come with a list of credits, like a film.

Could mu, was able to mu: yetenek mi, tek bir sonuç mu?

  • Genel yetenek: “By the age of twelve, he could rebuild a bicycle wheel.”
  • Tamamlanmış tek bir başarı: “Despite the darkness, Lina was able to find the correct valve.”
  • Managed to çaba ya da zorluk ekler, “başardık” gibidir: “After three attempts, we managed to restart the server.”

Olumlu could da iki durumda geri gelir.

  • Başarısız deneme: “We couldn’t open the cabinet.” “We were unable to open the cabinet.”
From the control room, we could see smoke above the east wing.”
  • Cümleyi neredeyse olumsuz yapan hardly: “With the brace on, I could hardly reach the switch.”

Be able to: can’in sahip olmadığı biçimler

Can’in mastar, -ing ya da perfect biçimi yoktur ve başka bir modal fiilden sonra gelemez. Türkçede “-ebil-” eki bütün zaman ekleriyle birleşir (“yapabilecek”, “yapabilmiş”); İngilizcede bu işi be able to yapar:

  • Mastar: “We hope to be able to reopen the workshop.”
  • Perfect: “They have been able to reduce the unit’s weight.”
  • Gelecek, henüz var olmayan bir yetenek için: “Once the labels arrive, volunteers will be able to run the trial.” Kararlaştırılmış bir plan için can yeterlidir: “We can test it tomorrow evening.”
  • Başka bir modal fiilden sonra: “We might be able to borrow a thermal camera.”
  • Daha resmi üslup: “The supplier is unable to guarantee Friday delivery.”

Geçmişteki tek başarı olan elektrik kesintisindeki kapatma işlemi was able to alır; henüz denenmemiş revizyon ise should be able to alır.

Maya I can read the diagnostic output, but I’m unable to reach the reset switch while wearing the mobility brace.

Owen I could always operate the older panel easily. With this one, I couldn’t even locate the emergency control.

Maya The fabricator has been able to move the switches, and we should be able to test the revision tonight.

Owen Good. During the power cut, Rosa was able to guide us through the shutdown by touch. That single success changed the design brief.

Maya If the labels arrive, volunteers might be able to run the next trial without us.

Fazla söz vermeyen bir durum raporu

Zaman çizgisinin her aşamasına kendi biçimini verin ve her beklentiyi koşuluna bağlayın:

  • Şimdi: “We can run the diagnostics remotely, but we are unable to replace hardware.”
  • Tek bir başarı: “Last Tuesday, we were able to restore power within an hour.”
  • Başarısız denemeler: “We couldn’t reach the supplier, and the courier wasn’t able to deliver.”
  • Sonraki adım: “If the parts arrive on Thursday, we should be able to open on time; if not, we might be able to open one room.”

Bir aksiliği anlatmak

Could have ve past participle, mümkün olduğu hâlde gerçekleşmeyen bir şeyi gösterir; Türkçedeki “bitirebilirdik” gibidir: “We could have finished on Friday, but we waited for the client’s approval.” Couldn’t have … without bir sonucun arkasındaki yardımın hakkını verir: “Looking back, I couldn’t have done it without my sister’s help.” Sesli tartışın:

  • “Who helped you through a setback in ways outsiders might not notice?” Deneyin: “Looking back, I couldn’t have… without…”
  • “Is success down to effort or to luck?” Deneyin: “I’d put it down largely to…”

Sık yapılan hatalar

Bunları kontrol edin:

  • “After three attempts, we could restart the server.” Managed to ya da were able to kullanın.
  • “will can” ya da “have could”: will be able to ve have been able to kullanın.
  • Başardığınız bir sonuç için could have: bu, tam tersini söyler.
  • “succeeded to reduce”: doğrusu “succeeded in reducing”.
  • Koşulunu gizleyen bir söz: “We will be able to open on Friday.” Doğrusu “We should be able to open on Friday, provided the parts arrive.”

Günde 10 dakikalık pratik

Her cümleyi sesli söyleyin.

  • 3 dakika: Dünkü işiniz; can, was able to, couldn’t ve have been able to ile.
  • 2 dakika: Kesin bir sözü should be able to ve koşuluyla yeniden yazın.
  • 2 dakika: Yukarıdaki konuşmayı satır satır tekrar edin.

Sonraki adım

C1+ seviyesinde devam edin: bir tavsiyeyi koşullarını kontrol ederek sorgulayın, bir tiyatro eleştirisinde sahneleme tercihini açıklayın ve eşit olmayan terfi fırsatlarını çözümleyin. C1 seviyesinde yeni kanıtla değişen bir anı hakkında düşünsel bir yazı yazın.

Sık sorulan sorular
