İngilizce pratiği

İngilizcede bir tavsiye nasıl sorgulanır? (C1+) Koşullar, çıkarlar ve haklı noktayı kabul etmek

Two friends talk at two microphones in a small recording studio.

Şunu sorun: “What would have to be true for that advice to be wrong here?”

narrator A neighbourhood arts fund had to choose between a polished theatre proposal and a rough plan from teenagers who wanted an empty shop for rehearsals.

maya I asked the theatre director for advice. She said we should demand a detailed budget. Sensible, but her company would have gained the main grant if the teenagers failed.

owen So you sought a second view?

maya Yes. A retired youth worker suggested that the teenagers advise us on one smaller problem: preventing noise complaints.

narrator Their plan included an early finish, a named contact, and acoustic curtains borrowed from the theatre. Explaining it made them revise their costs themselves.

owen Giving advice turned them from applicants into problem-solvers.

maya Exactly. We funded a six-week pilot. The theatre lent the curtains, and the shop has had no complaints whatsoever.

The trouble with advice that worked

When Hanna Lindqvist stepped down after nearly thirty years of running a regional bus company, the board asked her to mentor a group of newly promoted managers. She agreed on one condition. She would begin every session with the same warning: “I’ll tell you what worked for me. Whether it will work for you is another matter entirely.” Most of the managers wrote down the first sentence and quietly ignored the second. That, Hanna says now, was the most useful lesson of the whole year, though it was not the one she had planned to teach.

Advice earned through experience has an obvious authority. Someone who has survived a strike, a funding crisis or a winter of cancelled routes has seen things that no textbook can reproduce, and it would be foolish to dismiss that. Yet experience also has a peculiar blind spot. The people who give advice are, almost by definition, the people for whom things eventually worked out. We rarely hear from the managers who followed exactly the same instincts and failed, because nobody invites them to speak at conferences. Their stories simply disappear, and the survivors’ stories begin to sound like rules.

Hanna first noticed this in her own voice. Asked how to handle a tense meeting with drivers’ representatives, she heard herself say, “Oh, you just let them talk for a bit and they’ll calm down.” It was the kind of vague, reassuring answer that sounds wise and commits the speaker to almost nothing. A few weeks later, one of her mentees, a quietly determined engineer called Tobi Adeyemi, tried exactly that. The meeting did not calm down. “You should have told me it only works when people already trust you,” he said afterwards. He was right, and she knew it. The advice had not been false; it had simply left out the conditions that made it true.

Since then, Hanna has tried to give advice in a different shape. Rather than offering a conclusion, she describes the situation she was in, what she did, and what she would do differently now. She also names the self-interest behind her own suggestions, which is less comfortable than it sounds. “I’d rather you didn’t reorganise the night shift,” she once told a manager, “and you should know that part of the reason is that I designed it.” Advice with its motives on display, she argues, is easier to test and harder to follow blindly.

Not everyone is persuaded. Some of her former colleagues think the new style is overcautious. A young manager, they point out, will often need a clear instruction more than a seminar on uncertainty, and a mentor who qualifies every sentence may end up offering no guidance whatsoever. There is something to this. When a bus has broken down on a motorway at two in the morning, nobody wants to hear three possible interpretations of the timetable. Confidence, in the right place, is a form of responsibility.

Hanna’s answer is not to abandon confidence but to earn it differently. She now ends each session with a question for the mentee: “What would have to be true for my advice to be wrong here?” If they can answer, she is happy to be firm. If they cannot, she suspects they are about to borrow her experience without understanding it. “It shouldn’t take a disaster to discover the limits of someone else’s story,” she says. “But it usually does.”

Tobi, who now runs a depot of his own, has found himself on the other side of the table. New staff will ask him what to do, and he still feels the old temptation to give a neat answer. “Shall I tell you what I did,” he asks them, “or shall we work out what you should do?” It takes longer. The results should be visible within a year or two, he believes, in managers who can explain their decisions rather than merely repeat them. Whether he is right, he admits, remains to be seen.

Her tavsiye için üç sınama

Deneyimin bir kör noktası vardır: Çoğunlukla işleri yolunda gitmiş insanları dinleriz; aynı şeyi yapıp başarısız olanları pek duymayız.

  • Koşullar: “What would have to be true for that advice to be wrong here?”
  • Çıkarlar, suçlamadan sorulur: “Would your own organisation be affected by what we decide?”
  • Kanıt: “Has it ever gone wrong for someone in a different position?”
  • Sonra geçerli olanı kabul edin: “There’s a case for a detailed budget, but it shouldn’t be the only test for first-time applicants.”

“Sensible, but her company would have gained…” cümlesine dikkat edin: önce kabul, sonra çıkar.

Akıcı konuşanlar “I disagree” deyip bırakmaz, geçerli olanı kabul edip gerisini daraltır. “That rather depends on…” kalıbındaki rather “bir ölçüde” demektir, tercih bildirmez.

  • Bir noktayı kısmen kabul etmek: “Up to a point, but…” “There’s a case for…, but…”
  • Koşula bağlamak: “That rather depends on whether people already trust you.”
  • Konuyu yeniden çerçevelemek: “It’s not so much bad advice as advice without its conditions.”
  • Akıl yürütmeye itiraz etmek: “The flaw in that argument is that we only hear from the people it worked for.”

Will, would, should ve shall: tutum ve zaman

Her modal birden fazla iş görür. Türkçedeki -meli hem should hem must karşılığıdır; tavsiyede must çoğu zaman fazla sert durur. Hızlı konuşmada have kısalır: should’ve /ʃʊdəv/, would’ve /wʊdəv/.

  • Temkinli bir görüş için would: “I would suggest a shorter pilot.”
  • Tipik davranış için will: “New staff will often ask for a neat answer.”
  • Tavsiye için should, geçmişe yönelik eleştiri için should have, yani “söylemeliydin”: “You should disclose the conflict.” “You should have told me it only works when people already trust you.”
  • Teklif ve öneri için shall: “Shall I tell you what I did, or shall we work out what you should do?”
  • Modalden sonra gelen mastar zamanı ve çatıyı gösterir: “may leave” (şimdi ya da sonra), “may have left” (geçmiş: “gitmiş olabilir”), “may be leaving” (süren: “gidiyor olabilir”), “may have been waiting” (bir süre boyunca devam eden), “should be signed; should have been signed” (edilgen).

  • Çıkarınız: “I’d rather you didn’t reorganise the night shift, and you should know that part of the reason is that I designed it.”
  • Güvenceli işinden ayrılıp bir kooperatifi yönetmeyi düşünen bir arkadaşa iki koşullu öneri: “If the cooperative can show a year of steady orders, I’d take the offer seriously.” “If your savings only cover four months, I’d ask for a trial period before resigning.”

  • “Should managers and mentors say openly what they gain from the advice they give? Would it make them more or less persuasive?”
  • “In a crisis, is a confident instruction more responsible than carefully qualified advice? Where would you draw the line?”
  • “If we mostly hear from people who succeeded, can we ever learn reliably from other people’s experience?”

  • “I’d rather you don’t change it.” Would rather’dan sonra yeni bir özne gelirse geçmiş biçim kullanılır: “I’d rather you didn’t change it.” Türkçedeki “değiştirmemeni tercih ederim” bu ipucunu vermez.
  • Haksız bir should have: Bunu yalnızca kişi o anda bilebilecek durumdaydıysa kullanın.
  • Her cümleyi yumuşatıp sonunda hiç tavsiye vermemek.

Geçerli kısmı kabul edin, sonra “Up to a point, but…” ya da “I’m not entirely convinced that…” ile daraltın. Tek başına “I disagree” sert kaçabilir.

Should ile should have arasındaki fark nedir?

Should şimdiye ya da geleceğe bakar; tavsiye ya da olasılık bildirir: “She should be at the venue by now.” Should have + past participle ise geçmişe bakar ve Türkçedeki “-meliydi” gibi gerçekleşmemiş bir beklentiyi ya da eleştiriyi bildirir: “The parcel should have arrived yesterday.”

“Should of” doğru mu?

Hayır. Konuşmadaki should’ve kısaltmasının yanlış yazımıdır; açık hâli should have’dir: “You should’ve told me.”
