“to”가 남는 것은 “have to”와 “ought to”뿐이에요. 한국어로 생각하면 “-아/어야 해요”는 “have to”와 “must”, “-(으)면 안 돼요”는 “mustn’t”, “-지 않아도 돼요”는 “don’t have to”에 가까워요.
“Audience members have to keep devices silent.” “Do I have to leave my phone in the box?”
“I must be reachable tonight.”
- 금지: “mustn’t”. “Guests mustn’t answer calls inside the auditorium.”
- 필요 없음, 즉 선택의 문제: “don’t have to”. “You don’t have to switch your phone off if reception keeps it.”
- 조언, 규칙보다 부드러운 표현: “should”, “shouldn’t”, “ought to”. “You ought to give reception your seat number.”
“mustn’t”와 “don’t have to”: 뜻이 뒤집히는 한 쌍
부정문에서 “must”와 “have to”는 갈라져요. “mustn’t”는 금지, “don’t have to”는 필요가 없다는 뜻이고, “shouldn’t”는 좋지 않은 생각일 뿐이에요.
- “You shouldn’t take a call there.”
- “You mustn’t take a call there.”
- “You don’t have to take a call there.”
I understand the rule.”
The care home may call about my father tonight.”
Could we make an exception? Could reception keep my phone?”
I’ll switch off every other notification, and I won’t check messages during the film.”
Maya Before you go in, you have to leave your phone in the secure box. We had two complaints after last week's screening.
Owen I understand the rule, but the care home may call about my father tonight. I must be reachable.
Maya You mustn't take a call inside, and the phone shouldn't even vibrate near the seats.
Owen Could reception keep it? You don't have to interrupt the film. Someone could quietly come and get me.
Maya That could work. You ought to give reception your seat number and the caller's number.
Owen Fine. I'll switch off every other notification, and I won't swipe through messages during the film.
- “call back”(다시 전화하다): “The nurse asked him to call back after nine.”
- 통화가 잘 안 될 때: “I tried twice, but the line was engaged.” “They put me on hold.” “We were cut off.”
- “go off”(갑자기 울리다): “A phone went off during the welcome speech.”
- 금지를 말하면서 “You don’t have to use your phone inside”. “You mustn’t use your phone inside.”
- “I must to leave early.” “must” 뒤에는 “to”가 없어요. “I must leave early.” “You ought to give them your number.”
- “Did you must wait?” “Did you have to wait?”
- “I need my phone”은 요구처럼 들려요. “I understand the rule, but…”
“I think there ought to be…”, “People mustn’t…, but…”, “You don’t have to…, unless…”
- “Should cinemas and restaurants make their own phone rules, or should people decide for themselves?”
- “Is it fair for an employer to ban phones in meetings? Who should get an exception?”
