ゲストに家を英語で紹介するには:not as … as、too、enough(B1 Preliminary)

A teenager shows his small flat and a sofa bed full of cushions while one friend films and another holds a laptop showing three friends on a video call. A cat sleeps in a laundry basket in the narrow hall.

(B1 Preliminary、B1 Preliminary for Schools):not as … as、too … to、big enough、much bigger、家の単語、60語のホストプロフィール例。

ほとんどは4つの表現で言える:“not as … as”、“too … to”、“big enough”、それに比較級の前の“much”。

Narrator Max Carter's reaction video to Kai's 'cheese' clip was all over school. But by Saturday, the Loop had a new job: home tours for a possible exchange week.

Theo OK, welcome to my flat. It isn't as big as your house, Lucas. It's much smaller, to be honest.

Lucas Small is fine! My house is bigger, but it's far from everything. Your flat is much closer to the city centre.

Deniz My flat has a balcony with a great view of the bay. But our spare room is too small to fit two beds.

Kai Theo, this hall is too narrow to film in. I can't get far enough back!

Zara Wait. Is that Byline asleep in your laundry basket?

Kai Abuela said he needed a day out. He looks more relaxed than any of us.

Hana Theo, the best home isn't the biggest one. It's the one where a guest feels welcome.

Theo Then maybe my flat is big enough. A guest can have the sofa bed and all the cushions.

Zara Let's compare all three homes honestly. Every home has something the others don't.

文の形

Write a host profile for your home (about 60 words).

Hi! I live in a small flat near the city centre with my mum and my little brother. It isn't as big as a house, but it's cosy and convenient: the bus stop is right outside. You'll have the spare room, which is quiet enough to study in. We usually have dinner at seven, and you're welcome to join us!

The model has 60 words. It says where the home is, compares it (isn't as big as), says where the guest will sleep (quiet enough to study in), gives a routine and ends with an invitation.

  • Hi! I live in … with …
  • It isn't as … as …, but …
  • You'll have / You'll share …
  • … enough to …
  • We usually …
  • You're welcome to …

Host families for the exchange week

A · Poppy

We live in a flat on Harbour Road, just two minutes from the harbour, so you can watch the boats every day. My family loves cooking, and on Sundays we make a traditional British lunch together. You can help! You can also borrow my old bike to get around Kingsbay.

B · Freya

Our flat is right in the city centre, above a bookshop in Market Square, so the shops and cafés are just downstairs. I've got a big bedroom and I'd love to share it with a girl my age. My mum is an art teacher, and we often paint together at the kitchen table.

C · Harry

We live in a house at the edge of the city with a huge garden, and we play football there every evening. My brother and I share a big bedroom, and there's space for a third bed for a boy guest. Our dog, Biscuit, is very friendly and loves playing with visitors.

D · Alfie

Our house is next to a big park, and our garden is big enough for football. My dad and I play every evening. We haven't got any pets. A guest would share my bedroom; I'm thirteen, like most of the exchange students.

E · Maisie

Our flat is on King Street, next to the shops, and it's a five-minute walk from Harbour Park School, so you can get up a bit later than most students! You'll have your own small room. Nobody in my family eats meat or fish, and my dad makes the best vegetable curry in Kingsbay. My mum and I love drawing together.

F · Reuben

Our house is only ten minutes on foot from Harbour Park School, and the guest has the spare room at the top of the house. We love barbecues in the garden, with burgers, sausages and chicken, so come hungry! My dad can teach you to cook them, and you can borrow my bike at weekends.

G · Isla

We live in a quiet house opposite the park. There are no young children in the family, so it's peaceful enough to study. My grandfather plays the piano every evening, and guests are welcome to use it. The guest room is small but comfortable.

H · Rory

Our house is near the park, and there's a piano in the living room that anyone can play. My twin sisters are four years old. They're lovely, but very loud! The guest room is next to theirs, so it's never really quiet.

Use it to show a small difference.

Theo's sofa bed is a bit shorter than a normal bed.

Why is my home right for Deniz?

Why is your home right for me?

Because it's quite close to the sea, so you can still see boats, and it's much quieter than your street. You're welcome to come to basketball with me on Saturday.

  • Because it's …
  • It's much …er than …
  • You're welcome to …

  • “Hi! I live in a small flat near the city centre with my mum and my little brother.” →
  • “It isn’t as big as a house, but it’s cosy and convenient: the bus stop is right outside.” →
  • “You’ll have the spare room, which is quiet enough to study in.” → ゲストが寝る場所(または “You’ll share my room.”)
  • “We usually have dinner at seven,” →
  • “and you’re welcome to join us!”

正直に比べる:not as … as、much、a bit

“Not as … as” は、一方がある性質で及ばないことを表す:“My flat isn’t as big as your house.” 2つのasは弱く発音して、形容詞を強く言おう:as BIG as。notがなければ「同じくらい」の意味:“as quiet as a library”。

差が大きいときは比較級の前にmuchかfar、小さいときはa bitを使う:“much closer”、“a bit shorter”。

OK, welcome to my flat. It isn't as big as your house, Lucas. It's much smaller, to be honest.

Small is fine! My house is bigger, but it's far from everything. Your flat is much closer to the city centre.

“Too” は「ちょうどいい程度を超えている」、つまり何かができないという意味:“This hall is too narrow to film in.” tooはveryを強くした言葉じゃないから、“The room is too cosy” は文句のように聞こえるよ。

部屋の中で勉強するから “quiet enough to study in” になる。

1 My flat has a balcony with a great view of the bay. But our spare room is too small to fit two beds.

友だち2 Theo, this hall is too narrow to film in. I can't get far enough back!

flat(イギリス)とapartment(アメリカ)は同じ意味だよ。

  • 場所:balcony、view、neighbourhood、spare room、sofa bed。
  • 説明:convenient(お店やバス停が近い)、cosy(小さくて暖かくて居心地がいい)、peaceful、noisy、tidy。
accommodationはイギリス英語では数えられない名詞:“The school needs accommodation for all the guests.”

It’s close to the sea, so you can watch the boats, and it’s much quieter than your street.”

Would you like to come to the market with us?”
  • 答える:“I’d love to!” または “Thanks, but I’d rather stay in.” I’d ratherの後ろはtoなしの動詞の原形。

  • “My flat isn’t as big than your house.” → “My flat isn’t as big as your house.”
  • “The sofa bed is enough big.” → “The sofa bed is big enough.” 「
  • “The hall is too much narrow for film.” → “The hall is too narrow to film in.”
  • “Your view is very better than mine.” → “Your view is much better than mine.”

“Too” は「多すぎて何かができない」:“too small to fit two beds”。“Enough” は「必要なだけある」:“big enough for one guest”。

“as big as” と “as big than”、どっちが正しい?

“As big as”。

B1 Preliminary
