“to”が残るのは“have to”と“ought to”だけです。日本語の「〜なければならない」は“have to”と“must”、「〜てはいけない」は“mustn’t”、「〜なくてもいい」は“don’t have to”にほぼ対応します。
“Audience members have to keep devices silent.” “Do I have to leave my phone in the box?”
“I must be reachable tonight.”
- 禁止:“mustn’t”。“Guests mustn’t answer calls inside the auditorium.”
- 不要、つまり自分で選べる:“don’t have to”。“You don’t have to switch your phone off if reception keeps it.”
- 助言、ルールより柔らかい:“should”“shouldn’t”“ought to”。“You ought to give reception your seat number.”
“mustn’t”と“don’t have to”:意味が逆になるペア
“mustn’t”は禁止、“don’t have to”は必要がないこと、“shouldn’t”はよくない考えというだけです。
- “You shouldn’t take a call there.”
- “You mustn’t take a call there.”
- “You don’t have to take a call there.”
I understand the rule.”
The care home may call about my father tonight.”
Could we make an exception? Could reception keep my phone?”
I’ll switch off every other notification, and I won’t check messages during the film.”
Maya Before you go in, you have to leave your phone in the secure box. We had two complaints after last week's screening.
Owen I understand the rule, but the care home may call about my father tonight. I must be reachable.
Maya You mustn't take a call inside, and the phone shouldn't even vibrate near the seats.
Owen Could reception keep it? You don't have to interrupt the film. Someone could quietly come and get me.
Maya That could work. You ought to give reception your seat number and the caller's number.
Owen Fine. I'll switch off every other notification, and I won't swipe through messages during the film.
- “call back”(かけ直す):“The nurse asked him to call back after nine.”
- 電話がうまくいかないとき:“I tried twice, but the line was engaged.” “They put me on hold.” “We were cut off.”
- “go off”(急に鳴る):“A phone went off during the welcome speech.”
- 禁止のつもりで“You don’t have to use your phone inside”。正しくは“You mustn’t use your phone inside.”
- “I must to leave early.” “I must leave early.” “You ought to give them your number.”
- “Did you must wait?” “Did you have to wait?”
- “I need my phone”は要求に聞こえます。“I understand the rule, but…”
“I think there ought to be…”, “People mustn’t…, but…”, “You don’t have to…, unless…”
- “Should cinemas and restaurants make their own phone rules, or should people decide for themselves?”
- “Is it fair for an employer to ban phones in meetings? Who should get an exception?”
- 3分:自分の生活の本当のルールを3つ、“have to”“mustn’t”“don’t have to”で言います。
- 2分:“ought to”と“I won’t”で条件を2つ書きます。
