Best Online English Courses in France: 7 Platforms Compared
⚠️ Last updated : November 2026

Around ten years of English at school, a “good level” listed on your CV, yet your throat still tightens when a colleague from Dublin asks you a question on a video call. If you're looking for the best online English courses in France, your problem probably looks something like this. In the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, France ranks 38th out of 123 countries and regions, with 539 points. The details matter more than the ranking : 555 points in reading comprehension, but just 456 in speaking. The gaps between cities are clear too, from 600 points in Grenoble to 532 in Marseille.

This gap comes at a cost. In an Ipsos survey conducted in late 2022 for Wall Street English, 32 % of working people said they had already decided against applying for a job because of their English. And speaking skills don't improve just by reading more. A study by Merrill Swain and Sharon Lapkin published in 1995, conducted (fittingly) with Canadian students in French immersion, shows that producing the language helps us identify what we cannot yet say, then correct ourselves. We explore this process in our article on why speaking English seems harder than understanding it.

We therefore took a close look at actual speaking time during lessons, the option to see the same teacher every week, and how each platform works on pronunciation. We evaluated seven options, from live private lessons to a hybrid school with physical learning centers. All prices are in euros.

!

The short answer

Our top pick is Flalingo : a regular teacher, a report after every lesson, an AI pronunciation coach, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Preply and italki are good for choosing your own teacher, Lingoda for a small-group curriculum, Cambly for conversations with native speakers, Gymglish for 10 minutes a day, and Wall Street English for a hybrid format.

Our evaluation criteria

Each platform had to answer the same seven questions, based on its pricing pages, help center, and subscription terms. The seventh, highlighted in orange, addresses a challenge most French-speaking adults share.

Teachers and matching
How are teachers selected, and does the platform help you find the right person ?
Curriculum and CEFR levels
Is there a clear path from A1 to C1, or does each lesson depend on whatever inspiration strikes that day ?
Speaking time
How many minutes of each lesson are truly yours ?
Progress tracking
Do you receive anything concrete after the lesson : a report, a list of mistakes, or exercises based on your errors ?
Flexibility
Can you take a lesson at 7:30 a.m. or 10:30 p.m., and what happens if you cancel at the last minute ?
Practical considerations
Are the trial lesson, refund policy, and automatic renewal terms clear before you pay ?
Pronunciation and speaking confidence (France-specific criterion)
Does the platform work on accent, sentence rhythm, and speaking confidence—the areas where French speakers lose the most points ?
How we did it: In November 2026, we reviewed prices, subscription terms and help articles on the official websites. Prices in dollars (Cambly, italki) are converted at the European Central Bank reference rate for November 2026 (€1 = US$1.1188) and rounded. Ratings come from Trustpilot and Google. Transparency: Flalingo publishes this article and appears in this ranking. All seven platforms, Flalingo included, were assessed against the same criteria, drawbacks included.

Speaking: French speakers' weak point

The speaking score of 456 will hardly surprise anyone. Many French speakers can easily read a report in English, only to stumble over a handful of sounds and the rhythm of a sentence. The culprits are almost always the same :

  • the “th” in think and this, which becomes an s or a z
  • the pronounced h, which disappears (“I 'ave 'eard”) or appears where it does not belong
  • word stress : French emphasizes the end of a group of words, while English stresses a specific syllable in each word (PHOtograph, but phoTOgraphy)
  • long and short vowels, which distinguish ship from sheep and full from fool
  • the -ed ending, pronounced as an extra syllable in worked or looked

An accent is not a flaw. It becomes a problem when it obscures meaning, or when the fear of being misunderstood leads people to avoid conversation—and this second effect takes the greatest toll. For each platform, we therefore checked whether pronunciation is corrected during lessons, whether a written record is kept, and whether there are resources for practicing between sessions. The role of accent is explored in detail in our article on the English accent test.

💡 Before choosing, assess your starting point. Flalingo's free English accent test asks you to read a short paragraph, then speak for about thirty seconds, and scores your accent from 0 to 100 in around two minutes, with no registration required. The lower your score, the closer you are to a native speaker. Take it again after three months of lessons : the difference will tell you more than a gut feeling.

#1 - Flalingo : a regular teacher, a report after every lesson, and an AI speaking coach

Flalingo offers live one-to-one English lessons, which are then analyzed by artificial intelligence. Lessons last 25 or 50 minutes, are conducted entirely in English, and take place one to seven times per week. According to the platform, only one teacher is selected out of every 73 applicants, following interviews, demonstration lessons, and a teaching assessment.

Its top ranking is mainly down to continuity. The Smart Matching system cross-references 18 data points (your goal, level, schedule, preferred accent, and even the temperament you want in a teacher) and presents you with 22 to 30 profiles. Flalingo estimates the likelihood of keeping the same teacher throughout your plan at over 90 %. When speaking makes you tense, that matters : by the third week, you are no longer introducing yourself, but picking up the conversation where you left off. And if you do not click, switching teachers is free and unlimited.

Lesson slots fit around a typical working week in France, from 7 a.m. before work to 10:30 p.m. On its business English page, Flalingo states that 68 % of its learners take lessons between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., with programs for more than seven sectors (meetings, presentations, emails, negotiations). Employers can also train a team through Flalingo for Business.

With FLAI, you can practice with AI between lessons. If a TOEIC, IELTS, or TOEFL exam is coming up, Flalingo Exams offers mock exams graded by AI in seconds.

Before booking, two free tests help you assess where you stand : the English level test (8 adaptive questions, 5 to 8 minutes) and the accent test described above.

What sets it apart : the FLAI report after every lesson

At the end of the lesson, FLAI, Flalingo's AI assistant, analyzes the conversation and provides a report covering three areas : accuracy (verb tenses, prepositions, word order), fluency (words per minute, pauses, filler words), and vocabulary range based on the CEFR. Each error is shown with a correction, then used to generate exercises : Vocabulary Boost, Grammar Repair, and Shadow Lesson, where you rephrase your incorrect sentences aloud.

Your teacher reads the same report before the next lesson, so they don't start from scratch. Preply offers a similar tool, Lesson Insights, but it is optional. At Flalingo, the report is part of the method.

Lessons are based on Smart Personalized Materials : 30 books and over 490 units, from Everyday English to English at Work, with IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and OET modules. How FLAI works is explained in What Is FLAI?.

My spoken English tends to get rusty when I don't practice it. I started Flalingo to address this, and I'm so happy with it that I've already renewed my subscription. I've also used it to prepare for my English exams. The teachers, learning support specialists and customer service team do everything they can to help you get the most out of your learning. 5/5

Honestly, I've been loving Flalingo for five months now. The platform has exceeded my expectations. The teachers are highly qualified and genuinely caring. I can choose between relaxed, conversational lessons and structured lessons. My favorite part is checking my FLAI analysis report after each lesson and comparing my results with previous lessons. Plus, we get enough speaking time in group lessons. And the customer service advisors are always quick and friendly. Trust me, Flalingo will give you more than you expect. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

#2 - Preply : thousands of teachers at every price point

Preply is an international marketplace for private lessons : each teacher sets their own rates, schedule and teaching method. The French version of the website lists over 46 000 English teachers, with an advertised average price of $18 per hour. A standard lesson lasts 50 minutes, and a subscription lets you split it into two 25-minute sessions.

You choose a teacher and a number of lessons, with a minimum of four per automatically renewing 28-day cycle. Lessons not scheduled before renewal are lost. You can pause for up to 20 days once per cycle, and if your first teacher is not a good fit, you can try two others at no extra cost.

For beginners, there is a real advantage : many teachers speak French and explain grammar in your language. The trade-off is that everything depends on your choice, with no shared curriculum or ongoing pronunciation work. We compare the two models in Flalingo vs Preply.

What sets it apart : Lesson Insights

Lesson Insights, Preply's AI-generated lesson summary, transcribes the session's audio (without video) and provides feedback on vocabulary, grammar and speaking, along with review exercises. It appears five minutes before the lesson ends. There are two limitations : the feature is only available for English lessons, and it only works if both the teacher and the student have enabled it.

Key features

  • Over 46 000 English teachers, filterable by price, country, languages spoken and specialty
  • French-speaking teachers for explanations in French
  • 50-minute lessons, or 25-minute lessons with a subscription
  • Subscription in 28-day cycles, with pauses of up to 20 days
  • Lesson Insights, an AI lesson summary (optional)

Pros

  • ✓ The widest choice of teachers and prices on this list
  • ✓ French-speaking teachers, helpful for beginners
  • ✓ Keep the same teacher for as long as you like
  • ✓ 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with over 25 000 reviews

Cons

  • ✕ Highly variable quality : finding the right teacher takes time
  • ✕ Unscheduled lessons are lost at renewal
  • ✕ Subscription renews automatically every 28 days
  • ✕ No shared curriculum or structured pronunciation support

Pricing

Preply publishes average prices in euros for France.

  • Average price of an English lesson: €16 an hour
  • Beginners (A1-A2): €2 to €28 an hour. Advanced (C1-C2): €8 to €50
  • Trial lesson of 25 or 50 minutes
  • Subscription: at least 4 lessons per 28-day cycle

Prices last checked : November 2026.

Who is it for ?

  • Beginners who need explanations in French
  • People willing to compare profiles and take two or three trial lessons
  • Highly specific needs : an interview, an industry, a regional accent
  • All budgets, starting at a few euros per lesson

User reviews

Preply scores 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with 25 349 reviews. The two reviews below come from that platform.

Customer service was very responsive and professional. My problem was resolved quickly and I was able to transfer my lesson to another teacher. Thank you for your excellent support!

#3 - Lingoda : small groups and a CEFR-aligned curriculum

Lingoda is an online language school based in Berlin. Its English lessons last 60 minutes, either in groups of three to five people or one-to-one, and follow a CEFR-aligned curriculum from A1 to C1, with a business English pathway from A1 to B2. Around 2 500 certified teachers deliver one million lessons a year.

You buy a package that renews every four weeks and book slots from an extensive schedule. Unused lessons roll over to the next cycle. The trade-off is that your teacher and classmates change from one lesson to the next.

Then there is speaking time. With five people sharing an hour, each gets around twelve minutes to speak, before even subtracting the teacher's speaking time. That is enough to reinforce vocabulary and structures, but not much time to work on an accent or become more fluent under pressure. We compare this format with one-to-one lessons in Flalingo vs Lingoda.

What sets it apart : a curriculum that progresses from lesson to lesson

Each class covers a lesson from an ongoing curriculum, with materials available beforehand to help you prepare and then review on your own. For anyone who feels they are treading water after three weeks of free conversation, this structure is reassuring : you always know where you are within your level and what remains to be covered.

Key features

  • 60-minute live lessons, in groups of 3 to 5 people or one-to-one
  • CEFR-aligned curriculum : general English from A1 to C1, business English from A1 to B2
  • Unused lessons roll over, with pauses of up to 4 weeks per cycle
  • 7-day free trial (up to 3 group lessons or 1 private lesson)

Pros

  • ✓ A clear curriculum, with visible progress from one level to the next
  • ✓ Plenty of time slots thanks to the number of teachers
  • ✓ Group lessons offer some of the lowest hourly rates on this list
  • ✓ 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with nearly 6 000 reviews

Cons

  • ✕ No fixed teacher : the group changes with every lesson
  • ✕ Limited speaking time per person in groups
  • ✕ Subscription renews automatically every four weeks
  • ✕ Lessons must be canceled at least three days in advance to avoid losing the credit

Pricing

Lingoda publishes its prices in euros. The price per lesson goes down as the package gets bigger.

  • Group: from €59.99 for 5 lessons (€12 a lesson) to €289.99 for 40 lessons (€7.25 a lesson)
  • Private: from €169.99 for 5 lessons (€34 a lesson) to €834.99 for 40 lessons (about €20.87 a lesson)
  • 7-day free trial, after which the plan is charged on day 8 unless you cancel
  • Refund if you cancel within 14 days, minus any lessons taken

Prices last checked : November 2026.

Who is it for ?

  • A1 to C1 learners who need a fixed curriculum
  • Those who enjoy learning with others and want to pay less per hour
  • People who can plan their week a few days ahead
  • Budget starting at around €60 every four weeks for group lessons

User reviews

Lingoda scores 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot, based on 5 894 reviews. Both reviews below are from there.

The platform is very useful for organizing my learning, and the teachers are the best : they answer every question and guide me as I improve my English step by step. I'm very happy with my progress with Lingoda.

It's very well structured, with a clear learning path.

You don't really get a group experience, since the participants usually change with each lesson. The teachers differ from one another and favor different learning styles. You can, however, see which lessons a teacher is teaching next if you wish.

Overall, my experience has been excellent, and I've recommended Lingoda to friends.

#4 - Cambly : speak with a native speaker, anytime

Cambly is an American platform that works exclusively with native English-speaking teachers. You open the app, choose someone available, and start talking moments later, day or night. You can also book a fixed time slot.

There are three plans. Small Groups brings together one teacher and one or two learners over 21. Private+ adds one-on-one conversations. Pro gives you access to expert teachers, a personalized learning plan, and recordings and transcripts of every lesson. Each plan includes a set number of minutes per week, replenished on Mondays, and unused minutes expire.

If you're torn between this flexibility and a regular teacher with a curriculum, we compare the two approaches in Flalingo vs Cambly.

What sets it apart : conversations without an appointment

No other platform on this list makes it so quick to go from wanting to talk to actually having a conversation. If you have a call with a client in London at 9 a.m., you can usually find someone within a minute to warm up with. Your ear gets used to American, British, and Australian accents, and the Pro plan lets you listen to your lessons again to compare your pronunciation from month to month. However, there is no curriculum to take you from one level to the next.

Key features

  • Exclusively native-speaking teachers
  • Instant lessons, 24 hours a day, or by appointment
  • Small Groups (1 teacher and 1 or 2 learners, over 21)
  • Pro plan : recordings, transcripts, and automated feedback after every lesson
  • Unlimited pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary activities

Pros

  • ✓ Conversations with native speakers anytime, without an appointment
  • ✓ A good way to get used to accents and feel less anxious about speaking
  • ✓ Recordings to track your pronunciation progress (Pro)
  • ✓ Full refund within 7 days on your first plan

Cons

  • ✕ Not well suited to complete beginners : few grammar explanations
  • ✕ Unused minutes expire each week
  • ✕ Prices in dollars, with frequently changing promotions
  • ✕ Low Trustpilot rating (2 out of 5)

Pricing

Cambly shows its prices in dollars, labelled "from". We have converted them into euros.

  • Small Groups: from US$12 a month (≈€10.73)
  • Private+: from US$28 a month (≈€25.03)
  • Pro: from US$40 a month (≈€35.75)
  • These are promotional prices. The full prices are US$24, US$56 and US$80 (≈€21.45, €50.05 and €71.51)
  • Full refund within 7 days of starting your first plan, even if you have taken lessons

Prices last checked : November 2026.

Who is it for ?

  • Learners at B1 level and above who want to build speaking confidence
  • People who practice at unpredictable times
  • Those who want to hear native speakers without following a curriculum
  • Budget starting at around €11 per month in small groups, at the promotional rate

User reviews

Cambly scores 2 out of 5 on Trustpilot, based on 264 reviews. That's a small number of reviews for a platform of this size, and some concern billing and renewals rather than lessons. It's therefore worth reading the reviews individually. The first review below was translated; the second was written in French.

My English was terrible throughout school, and by the end of my studies I realized I needed a different approach to becoming bilingual: going abroad and taking regular lessons in France with native English speakers. That's exactly what CAMBLY offers. Teachers from all over the world with different specialties to help improve your English writing, speaking, reading and pronunciation around your schedule. It's really appealing and makes booking lessons easy! I highly recommend it!

#5 - italki : pay-as-you-go lessons, no subscription

italki is similar to Preply, with one major difference : there is no subscription. You top up your account and book individual lessons or packages whenever it suits you. The site lists more than 4 200 English teachers, divided into certified teachers with teaching qualifications and community tutors, who focus on conversation and are often cheaper. Lessons last between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on what each teacher offers.

Most teachers offer a discounted trial lesson : prices ranged from 5 to 40 dollars on the English teachers page when we checked. If the trial doesn't live up to expectations, the satisfaction guarantee gives you a refund in credits, provided you request it within 48 hours. As on Preply, quality depends on your choice of teacher, and there is no standardized report after lessons, but you can look for a teacher who specializes in accent training. We compare this model with a structured course in Flalingo vs italki.

What sets it apart : you only pay for the lessons you take

No subscription, automatic renewal or notice period. It's the easiest option to pause and resume : if you're going away for three weeks in August, you simply don't book anything. Many teachers offer discounts on lesson packages, so once you've found the right person, the price per lesson drops without tying you to the platform.

Key features

  • More than 4 200 English teachers, including certified teachers and community tutors
  • Individual lessons or packages, with no subscription
  • Lessons lasting 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the teacher
  • Satisfaction guarantee on trial lessons (refund in credits)
  • Video classroom built into the website and app

Pros

  • ✓ No subscription or automatic renewal
  • ✓ Affordable trial lessons, starting at 5 dollars with some teachers
  • ✓ Teachers specializing in pronunciation, exams or business English
  • ✓ 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with more than 15 000 reviews

Cons

  • ✕ Quality varies from teacher to teacher
  • ✕ No shared curriculum or standardized progress report
  • ✕ Refunds issued as credits, not cash
  • ✕ Payments in dollars, with potential currency conversion fees

Pricing

italki charges in dollars. We have converted the amounts into euros.

  • Trial lessons: US$5 to US$40 on the English teachers page (≈€4.47 to €35.75)
  • Regular lessons: rates set freely by each teacher, with possible discounts on packages

Prices last checked : November 2026.

Who is it for ?

  • People who travel or whose schedules change from month to month
  • Very specific goals : an interview, an accent, an exam
  • Learners who already know what type of teacher suits them
  • Flexible budget, starting at around €4 for a trial lesson

User reviews

italki has a rating of 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with 15 035 reviews. The two reviews below come from there.

Excellent platform. Teachers are available in many languages, including underserved or less common ones. The app is fairly easy to use. You can top up your account to keep fees as low as possible. The platform is very easy to use.

There is no subscription.

You can pay per session, lasting from 30 minutes to an hour. (A reminder is sent two hours beforehand.)

The teachers are very motivated, some even work on Sundays, and you receive a summary after each lesson.

#6 - Gymglish : 10 minutes a day with a series written in Paris

Gymglish is the only French brand in this ranking. Founded in Paris in 2004, the company has been called Aimigo since 2024 and reports having more than 8 million learners. The idea : a daily 10- to 15-minute lesson, delivered by email or through the app. The main English course, Perfume California, covers levels A1 to C2, with an American or British accent and a business English option. London Calling is aimed at complete beginners.

Each episode advances an often funny story set in office life, followed by exercises, a film or song clip, and detailed corrections.

There is no live teacher. Speaking practice is limited to a conversation with a character at the end of each episode in Perfume California, and from the second season onward in London Calling. A separate app, Aimigo Coach, offers conversations with AI coaches, but no human listens to your accent or prompts you when you hesitate. We explain what AI alone cannot replace in Flalingo vs ELSA Speak and Other AI English Apps.

What sets it apart : a daily lesson that revisits your mistakes

Gymglish does not ask you to set aside an hour each week. An episode arrives on the days you choose, ready to read on the subway or over coffee. You get corrections straight away, with explanations even for correct answers, and your mistakes reappear a few days later in a different form. This repetition builds grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension much more effectively than speaking fluency.

Key features

  • A 10- to 15-minute daily lesson, by email, on the web, or in the app
  • Perfume California (A1–C2, with a business option) and London Calling for complete beginners
  • Immediate corrections and review of your mistakes in later episodes
  • Basic : up to 5 episodes per week. Premium : 7, adjustable lesson length, and monthly learning support by email. Gold : unlimited access and learning support
  • 7-day free trial, with no commitment

Pros

  • ✓ French company, with service and interface in French
  • ✓ Takes very little time each day, making it easy to stick with long term
  • ✓ Funny stories that make you want to open the next episode
  • ✓ Low monthly price with a long-term commitment
  • ✓ 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot

Cons

  • ✕ No lessons with a live teacher
  • ✕ Very limited actual speaking time, with no human feedback on your accent
  • ✕ The price of $16 per month requires a 36-month commitment
  • ✕ The monthly price doubles on a shorter plan

Pricing

Gymglish shows "from" prices in euros, which correspond to the longest commitment.

  • Basic: from €14 a month
  • Premium: from €21 a month
  • Gold: from €31.50 a month
  • 7-day free trial, with no commitment

Prices last checked : November 2026.

Who is it for ?

  • People who want to get back into English in small daily doses

I feel like I'm making progress, despite my age. I like the conversation. Spoken conversation is missing. And sometimes I'd like to reread some exchanges with Magda.

#7 - Wall Street English : the hybrid method, with centers across France

Wall Street English stands apart in this comparison : it is a school with around 70 centers in France, also offering a 100 % online format or a combination of the two. You prepare for each lesson on the multimedia platform, then attend it with an English-speaking teacher, either one-on-one or in a small group of 2 to 4 learners at the same level. The course has 20 levels and 80 sublevels, with a coach for each student.

Wall Street English does not publish its prices. Before enrollment, a free English assessment lasting around twenty minutes determines your level, with plans ranging from 3 to 12 months. The school offers a refund if you do not reach your target level, provided you follow the required schedule of 2 hours and 30 minutes per week. Wall Street English courses are also eligible for CPF funding.

What sets it apart : the Social Club and Complementary Classes

Each center runs a Social Club, with English-language activities bringing all levels together for Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, or a cooking workshop, also available online. Complementary Classes, for 1 to 7 people, add conversation practice on current affairs or a grammar topic. For those who do not yet feel confident speaking, this is a chance to practice in person—something no other option on this list offers.

It was a perfect experience for a whole year. I learned so much. I started at level 1 and made a lot of progress. I can chat with people when I travel, understand them and make myself understood. The Wall Street staff pay close attention to your progress, and if there is the slightest problem, you can ask them for advice. Their social club and complementary classes are perfect for improving your skills. I recommend Wall Street 200%. A big thank you to the whole Wall Street Reims team.

I took my English course with the La Rochelle team, and it was simply excellent! A very professional team, always available and attentive. The platform is very user-friendly and easy to use, with fun, useful exercises that helped me improve my English quickly. A special THANK YOU to my teachers Damien and Aiden, who are great at teaching and very friendly. I loved my classes with them! Very interactive, engaging classes, with motivating topics from current affairs.

Thank you also to Emmanuelle and Sandrine for organizing everything and making it all possible.

Highly recommended! See you soon! Francesca.

Which combination of features is right for you ?

Our ranking follows our criteria. Yours depends on your weekly schedule and what you need English for :

  • You need to speak at work, want the same teacher every week and want to see your progress in black and white : Flalingo
  • You want to choose your teacher, perhaps a French speaker, and set your budget : Preply
  • You enjoy learning with others, following a curriculum, and planning a few days ahead : Lingoda
  • You want to speak with a native speaker tonight, without booking ahead : Cambly
  • Your schedule changes every week and a subscription would go unused : italki
  • You want to get back into English in small daily doses, without a teacher : Gymglish
  • You need a learning center, a coach and a structured program lasting several months : Wall Street English

A tip tailored to learners in France : set yourself a speaking goal with a deadline rather than an abstract level. “ Present the quarterly results in English in March ” is something you can work toward; “ get better at English ” is much less so. Take the accent test at the start, take it again three months later, and judge the platform by the difference.

In our view, what makes the biggest difference is the combination of a teacher who knows you and concrete feedback after every lesson. That is why Flalingo takes first place.

Frequently asked questions

1. How many lessons a week do you need to make progress in English?

Two to three lessons a week are enough for most adults to make visible progress. Regularity matters more than length: sessions spread across the week anchor vocabulary better than one long lesson, a spacing effect that research has documented well. Add ten minutes of practice on the other days, with an app or an AI coach, so you don't lose the thread. With just one lesson a week, progress is noticeably slower. Before an interview or a presentation, step up to four or five lessons a week for a few weeks.

2. How can French speakers improve their English pronunciation?

The most effective approach is to work on a few targeted sounds with feedback from someone else, then reuse them in conversation. Start with your weak spots: the "th", the h, word stress and long vowels trip up almost every French speaker. Record yourself reading a paragraph, then compare it with a native speaker. Get corrected by a teacher who notes down your mistakes, and practise between lessons with a tool that talks back. The free accent test gives you a starting score to measure your progress against.

3. Native speaker or trained teacher: which should you choose?

Ideally both, because being a native speaker is not enough to know how to teach. Up to A2 level, a teacher trained in teaching methods, or even one who speaks French, saves you time by explaining why you are getting things wrong. From B1 onwards, a native speaker helps more with accent, intonation and natural phrasing, as long as they can correct you without breaking the flow of the conversation. So look at a teacher's training as much as their first language. Preply and italki let you filter for French-speaking teachers, Cambly works only with native speakers and Flalingo selects native and certified teachers.

4. How much does an online English lesson cost in euros?

Between €2 and more than €30 per lesson, depending on the format. The lowest rates are with some teachers on Preply and italki. At Flalingo, a 25-minute lesson works out at €5.75 on the annual plan and €14.32 on the monthly plan. Lingoda charges from €7.25 an hour in a group and around €21 for a private lesson. Gymglish starts at €14 a month, without a teacher, and Wall Street English does not publish its prices. To compare, always work out the price per hour spent with a teacher.

5. Group lessons or private lessons: which should you choose?

For improving your speaking, private lessons are more effective, because you do most of the talking. In a group of five over an hour, each person gets around twelve minutes of speaking time, teacher included. Groups still have their advantages: they cost less, you hear other accents and they reassure people who don't like being the centre of attention. A good formula is to combine a regular one-to-one lesson with a group session, such as the weekly group lesson included in Flalingo's annual plan or Wall Street English's Social Clubs.

6. How long does it take to go from zero to B1?

Allow around 350 to 400 hours of guided learning from scratch, according to Cambridge English. With three hours of lessons a week, that comes to just over two years, and around a year and a half with five hours. Most French adults do not start from zero, though: with an A2 level left over from school, there are usually 150 to 200 hours to go. These figures are a guide and depend on your pace and how much you practise outside lessons. To find your starting point, take Flalingo's free level test.

Hi, I'm Glory. Teaching English is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life as I get to meet people from different cultures and help them express themselves with confidence. At Flalingo, I take care to create pleasant and relaxed teaching environments where students can speak without fear of making mistakes. My greatest happiness is witnessing the moments when my students realise that they are really making progress.
