Listen to the AI coach and answer aloud in your own words.

Corrections with a clear purpose

Review corrections after speaking so you can separate what worked from what needs another pass.

A report for reflection

Use the lesson report to choose the phrases and patterns you want to revisit.

Politeness lives in whole endings

The dialogue uses desu/masu style. Keep です and ます consistent in a first meeting rather than mixing them with casual dictionary forms.

Subjects disappear when context carries them

Repeating 私は in every sentence sounds heavy. Once the speaker is clear, Japanese often omits the pronoun.

Particles mark relationships

は sets a topic, で can mark a place of work, and と appears in naming/quotation frames. Replacing them with English word order loses the relationship.

Try a short speaking example

Make a polite Japanese first introduction, ask for meaning and gain thinking time without breaking register. The central move is practical: The dialogue uses desu/masu style. Keep です and ます consistent in a first meeting rather than mixing them with casual dictionary forms. You will use the model dialogue, repair language and a short transfer task to produce your own answer.

For English-speaking adults who can recognise basic Japanese but hesitate when they must respond. This page focuses on the contrast shown by “私は田中です。私は企画チームです。” and “田中です。企画チームで働いています。”, with understandable speech rather than accent erasure as the goal.

Model dialogue

A short exchange you can adapt

Keep one Japanese introduction polite and light on repeated pronouns.

  1. A

    はじめまして。田中です。

Nice to meet you. I am Tanaka.

  2. B

    はじめまして。アレックスです。

Nice to meet you. I am Alex.

  3. A

    アレックスさんと呼んでもいいですか。

    May I call you Alex?

  4. B

    はい。よろしくお願いします。

Yes, please. I look forward to knowing you.

Japanese

Useful phrases

もう一度お願いします。
One more time, please.

This polite request asks for the previous message once more. It repairs hearing; it does not ask what the words mean.

どういう意味ですか。
What does that mean?

Use this when you heard the Japanese but do not understand the intended meaning. Keep it neutral and listen for a paraphrase.

少し考えさせてください。
Please let me think for a moment.

This politely asks for a moment to think. It is appropriate in a considered exchange; resume with a concise answer.

Common pitfalls

私は田中です。私は企画チームです。

田中です。企画チームで働いています。

After the introduction, the subject can be omitted. で働いています expresses working in the planning team.

昨日来ます。

昨日来ました。

昨日 requires the polite past form 来ました; 来ます is non-past.

Practice

Five-minute answer ladder

Keep one Japanese introduction polite and light on repeated pronouns.

  1. Say はじめまして。アレックスです。 without adding 私は to both sentences.
  2. Ask どういう意味ですか after one unfamiliar phrase, then repeat the explanation.
  3. Replace the team and arrival day while preserving desu/masu style.

Move from script to response

Repeat the dialogue with your own details and deliberately use “もう一度お願いします。” plus the corrected form “昨日来ました。”. In Flai, you can practise turn-taking in live voice conversations from the current curriculum, then review the feedback and lesson report shown for that lesson. Questions

Is お先に失礼します a general “I did not understand” phrase?

No. It is commonly used when leaving work or a group before others. Use もう一度お願いします for repetition.

Do I need 私は in every sentence?

No. Once the topic is clear, Japanese commonly omits it. Use the pronoun when contrast or clarity requires it.

What if I cannot choose the perfect politeness level?

Start with consistent desu/masu forms in a first meeting and follow the other person’s cues. A stable polite register is more useful than mixing levels.
