English-guided German practice

German for expats in Germany

Choose a real situation, read both sides of a complete exchange, and rehearse a version with your own details.

Choose a guide

Six practical situations

Choose the conversation in front of you

Each guide includes two dialogues, adaptable phrases, common fixes, and a private local rehearsal.

01

An in-person viewing with an agent, landlord or current tenant. Formal Sie is the safe default until the other person offers du. Ask about observable features and written application steps. A friendly positive sentence can open the exchange, but it should not replace factual questions about this particular home.

German for a Rental Viewing in Germany

Ask about costs, condition and next steps without sounding abrupt.

02

A phone report and written follow-up to a landlord or Hausverwaltung. This is language practice, not legal advice about responsibility, payment, deadlines or rent. Use the contact and emergency instructions supplied for your building. Distinguish an appointment being arranged from a repair actually taking place: melden, vereinbaren and stattfinden describe different stages.

How to Report a Home Repair in German

Describe a fault, its location, timing and access window.

03

A phone call about a municipality registration appointment. This is language practice only, not procedural or legal advice. Use the service name shown by your own municipality. Bürgeramt, Bürgerbüro, Meldebehörde and Kundenzentrum may appear in different places; a vocabulary example does not prove that you chose the right local service.

German for a Registration Appointment

Identify the service, confirm booking details and find official requirements.

04

A routine call with GP reception. This is communication practice only: it does not assess symptoms, urgency, treatment or the appropriate kind of care. Follow the practice’s official instructions and relevant urgent or emergency channels. Reception may ask follow-up questions; answer truthfully rather than forcing your real situation into the sample dialogue.

German for Booking a GP Appointment

Give a brief reason, negotiate a time and confirm practical details.

05

A scheduled parent–teacher conversation. Use Sie unless the teacher or school has established du. This guide supports communication and does not judge a child’s ability, development or support needs. Keep the child at the centre without treating one classroom moment as their identity. Ask for situations, frequency and examples before proposing an action.

German for a Parent–Teacher Meeting

Turn broad feedback into observations and one shared follow-up.

06

An internal project or shift handover using established team du; adapt to Sie where your workplace does. Use real workplace terminology and approved channels, but practise only with non-confidential information. For regulated or safety-critical work, the official procedure, checklist and required read-back govern; this language lesson cannot replace them.

German for Handing Over a Task at Work

Transfer status, next action, deadline and risk clearly.
