Je voudrais is a conditional request frame. It is softer than Je veux in a service encounter and lets you attach the item directly: Je voudrais un café.
Many final consonants are silent, while liaison can link words. Train vous avez and je voudrais as sound groups instead of pronouncing every letter separately.
The sample uses vous with café staff. Keep vous pouvez and s’il vous plaît together; switching to tu without a cue can sound overly familiar.

Order politely in French, hear linked speech and recover a missing café word without dropping the turn. The central move is practical: Je voudrais is a conditional request frame. It is softer than Je veux in a service encounter and lets you attach the item directly: Je voudrais un café. You will use the model dialogue, repair language and a short transfer task to produce your own answer.
For English-speaking adults who can recognise basic French but hesitate when they must respond. This page focuses on the contrast shown by “Je veux un café, s’il vous plaît.” and “Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît.”, with understandable speech rather than accent erasure as the goal.
Model dialogue
Turn a French café request into a small exchange you can repair.
Bonjour, vous avez une table pour deux ?
Hello, do you have a table for two?
Oui, près de la fenêtre, ça vous va ?
Yes, near the window. Does that suit you?
Oui, merci. Je voudrais aussi la carte.
Yes, thank you. I would also like the menu.
Bien sûr, je vous l’apporte.
Of course, I will bring it to you.
French
Use Je voudrais before a noun or infinitive to make a courteous request; it is not a literal statement about a distant wish here.
This vous-form request asks someone to repeat. Add plus lentement only if speed, rather than volume, caused the problem.
Use this frame when the missing item is the word itself. Put the English word or a simple description in the gap, then repeat the French answer.
Je veux un café, s’il vous plaît.
Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît.
Je veux is grammatical but direct. Je voudrais better matches a courteous café request.
Vous peut répéter ?
Vous pouvez répéter ?
Vous requires pouvez; peut belongs with il or elle.

Flai AI speaking coachBoth are grammatical, but Je voudrais is the conventional courteous frame for ordering or requesting service.
In certain word combinations, a normally silent final consonant links to the next vowel. Learn it from complete phrases rather than applying it everywhere.
Choose a consistent listening model and aim to be understood. French varies by region; the page does not promise accent removal.
Return to spoken French through a café order: make a courteous request, recover one missing noun and confirm the price.
