The verb belongs in position two
English speakers often keep adding context before the verb. In a German main clause, anchor the conjugated verb in position two: Heute bereite ich die Präsentation vor. If heute moves to the front, ich moves after the verb.
German words change shape inside a sentence
Articles and adjective endings show case and gender. Learn a noun with its article, then rehearse the whole phrase rather than guessing an ending halfway through a turn.
Sie changes more than the pronoun
A new colleague may use formal Sie, which takes third-person plural verb forms. Keep Können Sie… and Ihnen together until the other person invites du.

Practise German verb-second answers, formal clarification and time phrases for a short workplace exchange. The central move is practical: English speakers often keep adding context before the verb. Use this polite Sie-form request when the whole question or a key detail was lost; stop and listen for the repeated segment.
- Ich bin noch nicht sicher.
- I am not sure yet.
This signals uncertainty about your own conclusion. Follow it with the point you want checked rather than leaving the listener to guess.
- Was meinen Sie genau?
- What exactly do you mean?
Use this when the words were audible but the intended meaning remains unclear; it asks for explanation, not repetition.

Formal Sie takes the plural-form verb können. Kannst belongs with informal du.

German main clauses keep the conjugated verb in position two. When an adverb takes the first slot, the subject moves behind the verb.
When should I use Sie rather than du?
Use Sie with an unfamiliar adult or in a formal workplace unless the person invites du. Mirror the form they use with you.
Do I need to pronounce every written letter?
No. Listen to complete words and stress patterns; German spelling is helpful, but connected speech still changes what you notice. Aim for clear contrasts, not accent removal.
