An architect leaves a workshop on time as colleagues take over an evening call.

يجب أن تكون القواعد دقيقة: “because of” مع مركّب اسمي، و“because” مع جملة، وصيغ مثل “A key factor in … was …”.

maya An eleven per cent increase sounds persuasive. Should every department adopt the question windows?

owen Not automatically. They helped when colleagues depended on one another, but independent research has a different interruption cost.

maya Could home workers simply choose whether to join?

owen Choice helps, although it can create a coverage problem. If everyone chooses the same quiet period, clients may have nobody to contact.

maya So flexibility still requires coordination.

owen Yes, and salary matters too. A shorter week may improve recovery, but employees should not be expected to compress five days of work into four days for less pay.

maya Would you reject a four-day trial?

owen No. I would define output, protect service coverage, and compare stress as well as volume. Otherwise apparent productivity may conceal unpaid catch-up work.

Model article: Why fair promotion rules remain invisible

Would you apply for promotion if the real test took place before the vacancy appeared? Many organizations sincerely want broader leadership, yet their informal routines can quietly narrow the field. The problem deserves attention not simply because exclusion is unfair, but because hidden selection wastes expertise.

Take the case of a library network that advertised every senior post publicly. On paper, access looked equal. In practice, branch directors invited familiar employees to lead urgent projects, and those projects later supplied the strongest interview evidence. A key factor in the resulting promotion gap was therefore not the wording of the advertisement but unequal access to visible work. After the network introduced a published project rota, applications from previously overlooked staff rose by 28 per cent within a year.

Personal confidence still matters. For instance, some capable employees underestimate their readiness and benefit from mentoring. However, confidence training alone cannot repair a system that distributes evidence unevenly. Repeated coaching is also slow, to say nothing of the cost, and it may even imply that the individual is the problem. A case in point is one branch where workshop attendance doubled while promotion outcomes remained unchanged until assignment rules were revised.

So what should employers do? First, publish how developmental work is allocated. Second, record who receives acting responsibilities. Third, ask unsuccessful candidates whether feedback identifies a skill gap or merely a lack of opportunity. Little by little, those checks turn a vague promise of fairness into an observable process. If your organization cannot explain who gets the work that creates future leaders, start there.

Neutral and conversational

  • for example and for instance introduce ordinary evidence.
  • say introduces an imagined illustration in a conversational register: “Say two candidates receive different access to acting duties.”
  • by way of illustration is formal and announces a developed example.

Emphatic and case-focused

  • to say nothing of adds a further strong consideration.
  • Take the case of and A case in point is introduce a specific case with argumentative weight.
  • to name but a few and among others show that a list is selective rather than complete.

Article requirements

  • Set a clear audience and suitable register; use direct reader address when useful.
  • Personal experience or ambition can humanize the issue; questions engage readers when they advance the argument.
  • Use evidence or statistics, a causal chain, a counter-consideration, and an actionable close.

The promotion audit that changed direction

A regional museum group noticed that equally rated applicants were not progressing to senior exhibition roles at the same rate. Its first explanation blamed confidence: unsuccessful applicants supposedly volunteered for fewer visible assignments. The board therefore funded presentation coaching. Six months later, participation had risen, but promotion figures had barely moved. Analyst Noor Patel then examined how assignments were allocated. Managers usually selected project leads during informal evening calls, before vacancies were advertised internally. Staff with caring duties rarely joined those calls and consequently entered interviews without recent leadership examples. One director objected that availability, not bias, explained the pattern. Noor tested that claim by introducing a daytime rotation in two museums while leaving a third unchanged. In the two trial sites, access to lead assignments broadened and the promotion gap narrowed; the comparison site showed no meaningful change. The finding did not prove that every decision was unfair. It did show that coaching had targeted a symptom while the allocation routine had played a more important causal role. The group retained coaching but replaced the evening selection calls with published criteria and a rotating panel.

Write for managers who control opportunities

An architect leaves a workshop on time as colleagues take over an evening call.

The quiet-hour experiment

Maya and Owen discuss a workplace timeline during a hybrid meeting.

A legal translation cooperative wanted to reduce late corrections without extending the working day. Managers initially assumed that translators needed longer uninterrupted sessions, so they reserved three-hour morning blocks and postponed all internal messages. Error rates fell slightly, but urgent terminology questions accumulated and caused expensive rework in the afternoon. The cooperative then tested a different routine. Teams worked in forty-minute concentration periods, after which a designated colleague opened a ten-minute question window. Employees were free to leave their desks between windows; nobody was required to rest in a particular way. Over eight weeks, completed pages increased by 11 per cent and late corrections fell by 19 per cent. Interviews suggested a mechanism: translators could postpone minor interruptions because they knew help would soon be available, while genuine emergencies still had a route through the team lead. The result was strongest among new employees and weaker among experienced specialists working alone. Home-based staff also warned that synchronized windows sometimes interrupted the naturally longer periods available in quiet houses. The directors therefore rejected a universal timer. They adopted question windows for collaborative projects and allowed individuals to document an alternative rhythm when the work required sustained concentration.

Would you apply for promotion if the real test took place before the vacancy appeared?”
Personal confidence still matters. However, confidence training alone cannot repair a system that distributes evidence unevenly.”
First, publish how developmental work is allocated. Second, record who receives acting responsibilities.”

“because” أم “because of”؟

  • “because of” و“owing to” و“on account of” و“due to” مع مركّب اسمي: “Appeals rose because of inconsistent feedback.”
  • “because” و“as” و“since” و“given that” مع جملة: “The board commissioned a second analysis because the coaching had not changed the result.”
  • “because of” للاستعمال اليومي، أما “owing to” و“on account of” فتناسبان الكتابة الرصينة.

وإذا لم تكن لديك مقارنة كهذه، فاكتب “may have contributed to”.

  • “One reason why evening decisions persist is that nobody owns the timetable.”
  • “A key factor in the trial’s success was protected preparation time.”
  • “The early improvement was partly down to novelty.”

“so” للاستعمال اليومي، أما “as a result” و“consequently” و“therefore” فتناسب الكتابة الرصينة وكثيرًا ما تبدأ جملة جديدة. ويمكن أن تأتي “hence” بعد فاصلة ويليها اسم: “The invitation listed the wrong date, hence the empty room.”

“say” تقدّم حالة مفترضة: “Say two candidates receive different access to acting duties.”
  • “a case in point is” تقدّم حالة حقيقية تدعم الحجة: “A case in point is one branch where workshop attendance rose but promotions did not.”
  • “to say nothing of” تضيف نقطة قوية أخرى، و“to name but a few” تبيّن أن القائمة مختارة لا كاملة.

  • “Is it fair for employers to reward people who are available outside normal hours?” جرّب: “The problem is that it quietly penalises…”
  • “Have you ever felt that being seen to work counted for more than the work itself?” جرّب: “In hindsight, the real reason was…”

  • “The reason why appeals rose was because of inconsistent feedback.” اكتب بدلًا منها: “The reason why appeals rose was that feedback was inconsistent.”
  • “Because of the coaching had not worked, …” الجملة تحتاج إلى “because” أو “as” أو “since”.
  • “We published the rota so that applications rose.” هنا تعبّر “so that” عن الغاية؛ وللنتيجة استخدم “so”.
  • “The gap was entirely due to bias.” من دون مقارنة، اكتب “may have contributed to”.

  • 5 دقائق: اكتب ثلاث صيغ: “the root cause of” و“a key factor in” و“partly down to”.

ما الفرق بين “because” و“because of”؟

تأتي بعد “because” جملة لها فاعل وفعل: “because the coaching had not worked”. ويأتي بعد “because of” مركّب اسمي: “because of inconsistent feedback”.

هل عبارة “the reason is because” صحيحة؟

هي شائعة في الكلام، لكن الكتابة الرصينة تفضّل “that”: “The reason why appeals rose was that feedback was inconsistent.”
