Two colleagues review the case documents at a desk.

Analyse the case

Maya and Owen review the case documents at a desk.

A research company wants specialist analysts for irregular projects. Its current freelance pool values autonomy, but six of fourteen analysts left after two quiet months with no minimum income. A salaried team would improve continuity but cost 24 percent more during low demand. A proposed hybrid offers a monthly retainer, paid project days and thirty days’ notice of volume changes. Leaders must compare flexibility, employment security, worker classification and knowledge retention rather than treating every career path as the same.

Study and adapt the decision brief

Maya and Owen review the case documents at a desk.

Subject: Recommendation — hybrid analyst career model

The freelance pool gives analysts autonomy and lets the company match capacity to projects. However, six of fourteen analysts left after two quiet months without minimum income. We should have examined income volatility before assuming that flexibility alone supported retention. A fully salaried team would improve continuity but is forecast to cost 24 percent more during low demand.

I recommend a three-month hybrid pilot with eight analysts. Participants will receive a monthly retainer, paid project days and thirty days’ notice of volume changes. Maya will confirm worker-classification and benefit implications before contracts are offered. Owen will publish two transparent workload tiers and a route for changing tier.

We will compare retention, delivered work, response time, income volatility and analyst feedback. If only we had gathered these measures earlier, the previous departures might have been preventable; that remains an inference rather than a fact.

The pilot will also record unpaid availability requests and rejected assignments, because retention alone would conceal whether flexibility is sustainable.

Please challenge the proposed measures before Thursday. The steering group will decide pilot terms on Friday.

Defend the recommendation

Maya and Owen discuss careers.

Maya Retention improved in the retainer tier, but delivered work fell during one quiet month.

Owen We need to separate paid availability from unused capacity before changing the rate.

Maya I’ll compare forecast accuracy and assignment lead time.

Owen I’ll ask whether the notice period changed decisions to stay.

Draft and revise the decision brief

Maya and Owen discuss careers.

Maya Give the career recommendation and its trade-off.

Owen Test a retainer and notice period because autonomy without predictable income contributed to departures.

Maya What could reverse the decision?

Owen High unused capacity or no retention benefit after three months.

Audit the final message

“In other words”は「言い換えれば」、“To put it another way”は「別の言い方をすると」にあたります。

  • “Yes, sorry, let me rephrase that: the retainer buys response windows, not unlimited availability.”:
  • “In other words, analysts can reject work without losing the retainer.”:
  • “To put it another way, predictable notice is part of the product.”:
  • “What I mean by availability is an agreed two-hour response window.”:
  • “The point I’m trying to make is that autonomy alone did not secure retention.”:

would haveは予想される結果、might haveはより不確かな結果、could haveは逃した可能性です。

  • “If we had tracked income volatility, we would have predicted the departures.”:
  • “In exit interviews, two analysts said they would have stayed with a minimum income; others might have.”:根拠を示し、度合いを区別
  • “If we had offered notice last year, we wouldn’t be recruiting now.”:混合仮定法
  • “We should have examined income volatility; we needn’t have rewritten every contract.”:
  • “If only we had interviewed all six analysts who left.”:

  • “She moved horizontally from finance to operations.”:
  • “A step backwards put him in a better position for his next move.”:
  • “Two contractors burnt out from accepting every urgent assignment.”:
  • “The analysts came up with a two-tier retainer.”:
  • “The income forecast must stand up to external scrutiny.” / “She stood up for a minimum notice clause.”:

Six of fourteen analysts left after two quiet months without minimum income.”
We should have examined income volatility before assuming flexibility was enough.”
I recommend a three-month pilot: a monthly retainer for two agreed response windows a week, plus thirty days’ notice of volume changes.”
HR will confirm worker classification before any offer; operations will publish two workload tiers.”
We will compare retention, delivered work, response time, income volatility and analyst feedback, and stop if unused capacity stays high.”

  • “If we would have tracked …” 過去完了を使います:“If we had tracked …”。
  • “We must have checked income first.” “must have”は推量です。
  • “The forecast must stand up for scrutiny.” 主張は検証に“stand up to”し、人は原則を“stand up for”します。
  • “We didn’t need to rewrite every contract”では、実際に書き直したかどうかがわかりません。書き直したが不要だったなら“We needn’t have rewritten …”
  • “Retention improved, so it works.”

  • 今ならどのキャリアの判断を変えますか?(“If I had …, I would probably …”)

“stand up to”と“stand up for”の違いは何ですか?

“stand up to”は「耐える」という意味で、予測が検証に耐えるときは“stands up to scrutiny”と言います。“stand up for”は「擁護する」という意味です:“She stood up for a minimum notice clause.”

“If I would have known”

ビジネス文書では“If I had known, I would have …”
