At the airport, a woman reads her receipts while a man lifts a tagged suitcase onto the belt.

The message at the wrong gate

At the airport, Maya reads her receipts while Owen lifts a tagged suitcase onto the belt.

The message at the wrong gate

We had been travelling for twelve hours when my phone suddenly displayed a message from an unknown number: “Your passport is at gate 6.” I checked my bag twice. The passport had definitely gone.

I ran back through the terminal, but gate 6 was nearly empty. A cleaner was waiting beside a blue seat. She had found the passport after I had moved to another gate, yet the airline desk had refused to announce my full name publicly. Instead, she had photographed the flight number on the boarding pass inside my passport and asked the desk to send a protected message.

Fortunately, I reached the new gate just before boarding closed. At the end of the flight, I wrote to thank her. In the end, the airport changed its lost-document procedure so staff could send secure alerts immediately without revealing passenger details.

“We had been travelling for twelve hours when a message arrived: my passport was at gate 6. I had left it there. Because the desk would not announce names, the cleaner who found it asked staff to message me. I boarded just in time. Later, the airport changed its rules.”

I checked my bag twice. The passport had definitely gone.”
Fortunately, I reached the new gate just before boarding closed.”

The gate changed, I ran, and the door closed.”
Passengers were boarding when the alarm sounded.”
The crew discovered that a sensor had failed.”
They had been waiting for three hours when a gate was assigned.”
  • “know”などの状態動詞は進行形にしません:“had been knowing”ではなく“She had known about the connection”。

“so”と“such”:結果を示す

  • “so”+形容詞・副詞:“The announcement was so unclear that half the queue moved.”
  • 数えられない名詞には“so much”、複数名詞には“so many”:“There was so much fog that the runway closed.”
  • “such a”+形容詞+単数名詞:“It was such a tight connection that I ran.”
  • “such”+形容詞+複数名詞・数えられない名詞:“We experienced such severe turbulence that service stopped.”

  • “hard”(懸命に)と“hardly”(ほとんど〜ない):“I worked hard but had hardly slept.”
  • “late”(遅れて)と“lately”(最近):“The train arrived late, and delays have increased lately.”
  • “near”(近くに)と“nearly”(ほとんど):“The hotel is near the terminal, and it is nearly full.”
  • “at the end”(端・終わりの地点で)と“in the end”(苦労の末に、結局):“At the end of the platform, I found the bag; in the end, we caught the flight.”

  • 位置が大切です:“Clearly, he explained the delay.”

Owen Apparently, the bag was deliberately removed.

Maya Actually, staff moved it carefully after the label tore.

Owen I had hardly read the second note. I nearly accused the courier.

Maya Fortunately, you checked. The bag eventually reached baggage reclaim.

Owen Lately, I have been reacting too quickly to incomplete alerts.

Maya Ideally, the system should display the reason beside the movement.

  • “in the end of the flight”。“at the end of the flight”と言います。
  • “such a severe turbulence”。
  • “She checked carefully the tag.”

  • 3分:“so”“so many”“such a”で結果を付け加えます。
  • 2分:“hard/hardly”“late/lately”“near/nearly”で1文ずつ言います。
Does a good story need a clear ending, or can it leave a question open?”

本筋の過去より前に起きた出来事に使います:“The crew discovered that a sensor had failed.”

“hard”は「懸命に」、“hardly”は「ほとんど〜ない」という意味です:“I worked hard but had hardly slept.”

“at the end”と“in the end”のどちらが正しいですか?

“at the end”は終わりの地点で、ふつう“of”を伴います:“at the end of the flight”。“in the end”は「結局」という意味です:“In the end, we caught the flight.”
