On monthly visits to my uncle, I used to notice one unopened envelope beside his phone.”
Because he changed the subject whenever I mentioned it, I assumed the letter contained bad news.”
After he moved, a postal receipt showed that the envelope had repeatedly been returned empty.”
I compared dates and asked his former neighbour why the same envelope kept returning.”
The empty envelope exposed my habit of mistaking his privacy for distance.”
The alarm sounded, and we called the caretaker.”
I was copying an old cassette when the lights went out.”
Someone had moved the torch, so we could not find it.”
Rain had been coming in through a cracked window, and the floor was slippery.”
“used to”“would”“be used to”
- “used to”、繰り返した行動と過去の状態:“My uncle used to keep every letter in a biscuit tin.” “His street used to be much quieter.”
- “would”、繰り返した行動だけ:“Every Sunday, he would make tea before we talked.”
- “was always + -ing”、その人らしい、しばしばいら立たしい習慣:“He was always changing the subject.”
- “be used to”(〜に慣れている)と“get used to”(〜に慣れる)+ 名詞または“-ing”:“I am used to working alone now.”
“I may have transferred that detail.”は可能性のある説明で、“It must have come from another visit.”
Maya You said the market smelled of coffee. Does the photograph support that?
Owen No. It shows the awning and pavement, but no café.
Maya Could the smell come from another visit?
Owen Probably. My aunt used to stop at a coffee stall, so I may have transferred that detail.
Maya And the pride you remember?
Owen That may be genuine, but I cannot attach it securely to this scene.
Maya Then preserve the image while labelling its uncertain parts.
Owen Exactly. Present confidence does not prove where each detail originated.
In the end, I learned that memory can be unreliable.”
What I had read as coldness turned out to be a kind of generosity.”
- “Do you have a memory that a relative remembers differently?”
- “What did your family use to do that nobody does any more?”
- “Should courts rely on memories that nothing else can confirm?”
- “He would own a bakery.” “would”は状態を表しません:“He used to own a bakery.”
- “I was used to visit him on Sundays.” 習慣なら“I used to visit him”、慣れなら“I was used to visiting him”です。
- “When I arrived, he repaired the radio for an hour.” 正しくは:“he had been repairing the radio for an hour.”
- “Did he used to reply?” “did”のあとは原形:“Did he use to reply?”
