German for Booking a GP Appointment

Reception needs a short truthful description, not a diagnosis rehearsed from the internet. State the main reason and duration, answer scheduling questions, and say clearly when you do not understand. Your speaking win is to repeat the exact appointment and any arrival instruction. Keep rehearsal fictional or non-sensitive; do not store private health details in a practice note.

You

You

Ja, Mittwoch um halb zwölf. Soll ich meine Versichertenkarte mitbringen?

Yes, Wednesday at 11:30. Should I bring my insurance card?

Notice: Abklären lassen means you want a clinician to assess something; it avoids announcing your own diagnosis. Worum geht es ungefähr? requests a short orientation, not necessarily your full history. Give the main symptom in your own words and a time span. If you cannot answer a question, say Das weiß ich nicht rather than guessing.

Please come ten minutes early.

You

Verstanden: Freitag um 15:40 Uhr, zehn Minuten früher.

Understood: Friday 3:40, ten minutes early.

Notice: Offer one usable time constraint rather than rejecting several options individually. Den Termin nehme ich gern clearly accepts. Repeat weekday and exact time, especially after hearing halb, Viertel or a fast sequence of numbers. Add arrival instructions such as ten minutes early as a separate fact.

Keep the structure. Change the detail.

Common questions

Before you practise

How much detail?

Begin with the main symptom or reason and duration in one sentence. Answer the receptionist’s follow-up questions truthfully. Clinical assessment belongs with a clinician, and this lesson cannot decide which details are urgent in your case.

What is halb zehn?

9:30; confirm in exact numbers.

Urgent situation?

This is routine language practice; use the appropriate official urgent or emergency channel.
