Flai

Voice practice in your own words

Listen to the AI coach and answer aloud in your own words.

Corrections with a clear purpose

Review corrections after speaking so you can separate what worked from what needs another pass.

A report for reflection

Use the lesson report to choose the phrases and patterns you want to revisit.

Tones distinguish words

A correct consonant and vowel with the wrong tone can point to another word. Practise the tone across a short phrase such as 会议室在哪里, not as an isolated number.

This page uses Mandarin and simplified writing

The examples are Mandarin Chinese in simplified characters. Other spoken varieties and traditional characters are valid systems but are not represented by this one sample.

English tense endings do not transfer

Mandarin often uses time words, aspect markers and context rather than changing the verb for tense. Do not invent an English-style verb ending.

Try a short speaking example

Ask for a Mandarin meeting room, confirm intent and practise tones with simplified Chinese phrases. The central move is practical: A correct consonant and vowel with the wrong tone can point to another word. Practise the tone across a short phrase such as 会议室在哪里, not as an isolated number. You will use the model dialogue, repair language and a short transfer task to produce your own answer.

For English-speaking adults who can recognise basic Mandarin Chinese but hesitate when they must respond. This page focuses on the contrast shown by “会议十点是开始。” and “会议十点开始。”, with understandable speech rather than accent erasure as the goal.

Model dialogue

A short exchange you can adapt

Confirm one Mandarin location or time while keeping tones inside phrases.

  1. A

    你好,请问会议室在哪里?

Hello, where is the meeting room, please?

  2. B

    在二楼,电梯右边。

On the second floor, to the right of the lift.

  3. A

    会议十点开始,对吗?

The meeting starts at ten, right?

  4. B

    对,我们一起上去吧。

    Yes, let’s go up together.

Mandarin Chinese

Useful phrases

请再说一遍。
Please say it again.

This asks the speaker to say the message one more time. It is a hearing repair and can be followed by 请说慢一点 if speed is the issue.

你的意思是……吗?
Do you mean…?

Use this before restating your interpretation as a yes-no check. Put the proposed meaning inside the frame.

让我想一想。
Let me think.

This gives you a brief thinking pause. Resume with a short answer rather than translating a long English sentence silently.

Common pitfalls

会议十点是开始。

会议十点开始。

The basic Mandarin clause does not need 是 before the verb 开始 in this statement.

我昨天来明天。

我明天来。

明天 already places the action in the future; combining contradictory time words makes the sentence incoherent.

Practice

Five-minute answer ladder

Confirm one Mandarin location or time while keeping tones inside phrases.

  1. Say 会议室在哪里? as one rhythmic question and then change the place noun.
  2. Use 请再说一遍, listen again, and repeat the time you heard.
  3. Put a new interpretation inside 你的意思是……吗? and wait for correction.
Self-check

Questions

Are these examples Cantonese as well?

No. They are Mandarin. Other Chinese varieties differ in pronunciation and often vocabulary or grammar.

Why are the characters simplified?

This page uses simplified Chinese. Traditional characters are used in other communities; the writing choice does not make those forms incorrect.

Can I ignore tones if context is clear?

Context helps, but tones carry lexical information. Practise them from the start inside useful phrases without expecting instant perfection.
