Two friends discuss a cracked artwork and a delayed schedule in their shared ceramics studio.

균형은 get 구동사와 “that said”, “to be fair” 같은 표현이 잡아 줘요.

  • get 구동사와 “that said”, “to be fair” 같은 표현을 외운 티 나지 않게 자연스럽게 쓰고 싶은 분.

The colleague I question—and call first

When Owen joined the museum’s digital team, I found him exhausting. He challenged every deadline, annotated messages that needed a simple yes, and once delayed a launch because a date in a caption was only ‘probably’ correct. I admired his care, but I also suspected that he enjoyed being the last person still arguing.

That judgement changed during the Harbour Voices project. Two days before opening, a donor insisted that we describe an unsigned diary as a captain’s eyewitness account. I wanted to soften the wording and keep the schedule. Owen refused. First, he traced the paper to a stationer that opened twelve years after the voyage. Then he found a passenger list whose spelling matched the diary but not the captain’s name. Finally, he proposed a replacement label that preserved the diary’s emotional value while stating that its author was unknown. The donor complained, yet accepted the evidence.

Since then, our disagreements have become useful. Owen still notices problems after I think a decision is finished; I still make him choose which doubts matter before a deadline. This can be uncomfortable, and neither of us mistakes friction for friendship. Even so, when a claim is sensitive or a source looks too convenient, he is the colleague I call first. Trust, in our case, does not mean easy agreement. It means knowing what the other person will protect—and why.

How the mixed judgement is built

Concede complexity

Open by granting a real strength while naming a genuine source of tension.

I valued Owen’s care, although his need to verify every detail slowed us down.

Mark the pivot

Identify the event that changes or sharpens the writer’s judgement.

My view changed when his objection prevented an unsupported claim from reaching the exhibition.

Sequence evidence

Order concrete actions so the reader can see why the revised judgement is justified.

He dated the paper, checked the passenger list, and then drafted an accurate replacement.

Qualify the close

End with a measured conclusion that keeps the remaining limitation visible.

Working with him is not effortless, but his resistance makes our claims safer.

The complaint that created a partnership

Maya and Owen discuss a cracked artwork and a delayed schedule in their shared ceramics studio.

maya I first spoke to Owen because a hotel had displayed my bowls under his name. I expected him to be defensive.

owen Instead, I found the packing list and admitted that my assistant had reused an old label.

maya You sounded genuinely embarrassed, so I helped you contact the other affected artists.

owen That joint call persuaded the hotel to fund a replacement exhibition. We later submitted a shared proposal.

maya I admire your openness, although your improvised plans still get on my nerves.

owen Fair. I love your precision, even if getting through to you when you are worried takes patience.

The words stay still; the attitude moves

enthusiastic: wide pitch range

Lively movement and strong prominence can signal excitement.

You opened a studio together? That's fantastic!

sceptical: compressed pitch or questioning rise

Restricted movement or a questioning ending can signal doubt.

The repair will only take an hour? Really?

irritated: sharp prominence

Abrupt, strongly stressed words can signal impatience.

I have already sent the form twice.

surprised: high onset

A sudden high pitch often signals unexpected information.

You met on the night the roof leaked?

reluctant: hesitation and delayed prominence

Pauses and restrained delivery can signal unwilling agreement.

Well… I suppose I could call them again.

sympathetic: warm fall and slower pace

A gentler pace and controlled fall can convey concern.

That must have been extremely difficult.

She is meticulous, although her questions can stall a meeting.”
My view changed during the quarterly forecast.”
She noticed that two regions counted customers differently and rebuilt the comparison, so we corrected the forecast before it left the team.”
Meetings with her still take longer, but our figures are safer because of it.”

“which can stall a meeting”에서 “which”는 앞 절 전체를 가리켜요. “so we corrected the forecast before presenting it”은 발견과 그 결과를 한 문장으로 묶어 줘요.

Maya My analyst questions every estimate, which can stall a meeting.

Owen What event showed that the questioning had value?

Maya She found that two regions used different definitions, so we corrected the forecast before presenting it.

Owen Then close with a judgement that keeps both the value and the cost visible.

한국어 “잘 지내다”는 “get on well with”, 시간이 지나며 “알게 되다”는 “get to know”예요.

  • “get on with” + 사람은 잘 지내다, + 일은 계속하다: “Maya gets on with Owen, although she needs to get on with the invoices.”
  • “get to know”, 시간을 두고 알게 되다: “They got to know each other while sharing a temporary workshop.”
  • “get through to”, 연락이 닿다 또는 상대를 이해시키다: “I finally got through to the insurer, but I could not get through to its impatient agent.”
  • “get over”, 좌절에서 회복하다: “It took Owen a week to get over the rejected funding bid.”
  • “get someone down”, 기운 빠지게 하다. 목적어는 가운데에 와요: “Uncertainty about the lease was getting Maya down.”
  • “get away with” + -ing, 잘못을 하고도 비판을 피하다: “No exhibitor should get away with concealing damage.”

  • “although” + 절, “despite” + 명사 또는 -ing: “Although she can be exhausting, I trust her figures.” “Despite slowing us down, her checks have saved us twice.”
  • “admittedly … even so”: “Admittedly, she slows meetings down. Even so, her review protects us.”
  • “that said”, 의도적으로 균형을 잡는 말: “She is very careful. That said, not every estimate needs a debate.”
  • “to be fair”, 내 불만에 반하는 점 덧붙이기: “To be fair, she always explains why she is asking.”
  • “I wouldn’t go that far”, 지나친 평가 거절하기: “Impossible to work with? I wouldn’t go that far.”

“I wouldn’t go that far”에서는 “far”에 강세를 두세요.

The repair will only take an hour? Really?”
That must have been extremely difficult.”

  • “Is a colleague who slows decisions down always a problem?”
  • “Should a reference mention a person’s weaknesses?”
  • “Can you respect someone you do not enjoy working with?”

  • “I get on good with him.” 부사를 써서 “I get on well with him.”
  • “The delays get down me.” 목적어는 가운데에 와요: “The delays get me down.”
  • “He got away to ignore the report.” “with” + -ing를 쓰세요: “He got away with ignoring the report.”
  • “I knew her better during the project.” 시간에 따른 변화라면: “I got to know her better.”
  • “I have two evidences.”

  • 3분: “to be fair”와 “that said”를 따뜻하게, 그다음 날카롭게 말해 보세요.

Meetings with her take longer, but our figures are safer.”

“get on with”와 “get along with”는 어떻게 다른가요?

일을 계속한다는 뜻도 있어요: “I need to get on with the invoices.”

“get through to someone”은 무슨 뜻인가요?
