영어로 “What does she do?”

People with different jobs talk at a reunion.

다른 사람의 직업, 일하는 곳, 하루 일과를 영어로 묻고 말하는 A1 표현: 직업 단어, “he works / he doesn’t work”, “Does she…?”, “always”부터 “never”까지 빈도 표현과 하루 10분 연습법.

영어로 다른 사람의 직업을 물을 때는 does를 써요: “What does she do?” 대답할 때는 직업 앞에 a나 an을 붙여요: “She’s a nurse.” 일하는 곳은 “Where does she work?”라고 묻고, “She works in a hospital.”처럼 답해요. he와 she가 주어인 긍정문에서는 동사에 -s가 붙지만, does와 doesn’t 뒤에서는 동사가 원래 형태로 돌아가요: “She doesn’t work in an office.”

  • 새 동료, 이웃, 외국인 가족을 만날 분: “What does your husband do?”나 “Where does she work?”
와 “I don’t…”

What does she do?”

“What does she do?” 대답은 be 동사, a나 an, 직업 순서예요: “She’s a nurse.” 한국어에는 a 같은 관사가 없어서 “She is nurse.”

  • “a teacher” (교사), “a doctor” (의사), “a nurse” (간호사), “a journalist” (기자), “a receptionist” (접수 담당자), “a factory worker” (공장 노동자), “a taxi driver” (택시 기사)
  • “a waiter / a waitress” (식당 종업원), “a policeman / a policewoman” (경찰관.
  • 지금 일을 하지 않는다면: “He’s a student.” (학생) “She’s retired.” (은퇴) “He’s unemployed.”

장소에는 work in이나 work at을, 회사에는 work for를 써요.

  • “She works in a hospital.” / “He works in a shop.” / “They work in an office.”
  • “She works at home.”
  • “He works for an American company.”
  • 이름이 있는 특정 장소에는 at도 아주 많이 써요: “She works at the city hospital.”

두 질문 속 does와 대답 속 works의 -s를 들어 보세요. doesn’t 뒤에서는 work에 -s가 붙지 않아요.

Maya What does your friend do?

Owen She's a policewoman.

Maya Where does she work?

Owen She works in the city centre. She doesn't work in an office.

“She works”와 “Does she work?”: -s 규칙

주어가 he, she, it이거나 한 사람일 때 긍정문의 동사에 -s가 붙어요: she works.

  • “He works in a factory.” / “He doesn’t work at night.”
  • “Does he work at weekends?” – “Yes, he does.” / “No, he doesn’t.”
  • “What does he do?” “Where does he work?” “What time does he start?”
  • 철자: “watch → watches”, “finish → finishes”, “go → goes”, “study → studies”, “have → has”

“always”부터 “never”까지

빈도 표현은 일반동사 앞, be 동사 뒤에 와요: “She usually gets up at six.” 하지만 “He’s always tired.” 부정문에서는 doesn’t 뒤에, 의문문에서는 주어 뒤에 와요: “She doesn’t usually work late.” “Does he often work at home?”

  • “always” (항상) → “usually” (보통) → “often” (자주) → “sometimes” (가끔) → “hardly ever” (거의 안 함) → “never” (전혀 안 함)
  • sometimes는 문장 맨 앞에 와도 돼요: “Sometimes she works at home.”
  • never에는 이미 부정의 뜻이 있어서 동사는 긍정형 그대로예요: “He never works on Sundays.” “He doesn’t never work.”

My sister is a nurse. She usually gets up at half past five and goes to work by bus. She often finishes at three. She never works on Sundays.”

  • 아침: “get up” (일어나다), “have a shower” (샤워하다), “have breakfast” (아침을 먹다), “go to work” (출근하다)
  • 그다음: “have lunch” (점심을 먹다), “finish work” (일을 마치다), “go home” (집에 가다), “make dinner” (저녁을 만들다), “watch TV” (TV를 보다), “go to bed” (자러 가다)
  • he나 she와 함께 쓰면: “gets up”, “has”, “goes”, “finishes”, “watches”

  • “She work in a hospital.” → “She works in a hospital.”
  • “Does she works?” / “She doesn’t works.” → “Does she work?” / “She doesn’t work.”
  • “He don’t work.” → “He doesn’t work.”
  • “She is nurse.” → “She’s a nurse.”
  • “She works often at home.” → “She often works at home.”
“Works in a hospital.” → “She works in a hospital.”

My brother is a taxi driver. He works in the city centre.”

현재진행형(am, is, are + -ing)은 지금 일어나는 일을 말해요: “She usually works in an office, but today she’s working at home.” 같은 does 질문은 약속을 잡을 때도 쓸모 있어요: “What time does the film start?”

“What does she do?”와 “What is she doing?”

“What does she do?”는 직업을 묻는 말이에요: “She’s a teacher.” “What is she doing?”

does는 he, she, it과 한 사람이나 한 사물에 써요: “Does your sister work?” do는 I, you, we, they에 써요: “Do your parents work?”

일반동사 앞(“He usually starts at nine.”)과 am, is, are 뒤(“She’s never late.”) 의문문에서는 주어 뒤에 와요: “Does he often work late?”
