Sentence Rounds: An English Sentence-Building Game for Kids

For older children, single words are not enough. In Sentence Rounds your child chooses the right word to finish a sentence, or puts word tiles in the right order: "What's / this?", "It's / a / ruler." The game builds the grammar of the unit one sentence at a time, and every finished sentence is read aloud by a native speaker.

How to play

  1. 1

The teacher shows a sentence with a gap, or a set of mixed word tiles.

  2. 2

Your child reads the words aloud.

  3. 3

Your child picks the word that fits the gap, or drags the tiles into order.

  4. 4

The finished sentence is played with its native recording, and your child says it too.

  5. 5

To finish, your child makes a sentence of their own with the same pattern.

TeacherMake the question!

Child(orders the tiles) What's this?

TeacherNow make the answer.

ChildIt's a ruler.

What your child learns

  • Understands English word order in statements and questions.
  • Uses the grammar pattern of the unit: from "It's a ruler." to the past tense at higher levels.
  • Reads short sentences fluently and checks their meaning.
  • Gets ready for writing by building sentences before writing them.

Best age

Sentence Rounds is for children who are starting to read in English: from Level 1 (around age 7) to Level 6 (around 12). Younger children play the picture games instead.

Play it at home

No screen needed: a few toys or a picture book are enough.

  • Write a sentence on a strip of paper, cut it into words, mix them up and rebuild it together.
  • Make silly sentences with the same pattern: "It's a purple elephant."
  • Ask your child to read a sentence from their lesson aloud at dinner.

Questions parents ask

My child can't read yet. Is this game for them?

Not yet. Find It in the Picture and Sound Boxes fit better. Sentence Rounds start at Level 1, when reading in English begins.

Is this grammar practice?

Yes, but without rules to memorise. Children notice the pattern by building the same kind of sentence again and again.

Play it in a live lesson

This game is part of every Flalingo kids game lesson. Your child plays it with a teacher on the same screen, using the words of their own unit.
