Find It in the Picture: An English Vocabulary Game for Kids

One big picture, a word or a clue in English, and a child who has to find it. Find It in the Picture is the game Flalingo teachers use most to turn new words into something a child can see and touch. It needs no reading at the start and it grows with your child: a preschooler finds "the red ball", an older child solves a clue such as "It's yellow. It's between the plane and the train."

How to play

  1. 1

The teacher opens the picture of the unit on the shared screen: a classroom, a park, a zoo or a space station.

  2. 2

Your child meets the new words first. Tapping a thing plays its name, recorded by a native speaker.

  3. 3

The teacher says a word ("Where is the ruler?") or, at higher levels, gives a clue to read.

  4. 4

Your child finds the thing in the picture and taps it. The right answer lights up and the word is said again.

  5. 5

Before the next round, your child says the word or the whole sentence: "It's a ruler!"

A sample round

This is how a round sounds in a live lesson.

TeacherLook at the zoo. Where is the giraffe?

Child(taps the giraffe) Giraffe!

TeacherYes! Now a riddle. It's grey and it's very big. It has a long nose.

Child(finds it) It's an elephant!

What your child learns

  • Recognises the new words of the unit when they are spoken, not only when they are written.
  • Understands describing words: colours, sizes and numbers.
  • Follows position words such as in, on, under, next to and between.
  • From Level 1, reads a short clue or riddle and works out the answer: reading for meaning.

Best age

Find It in the Picture works from age 4. Preschool children play with single words and colours. From Level 1 (around age 7) the teacher reads short clues, and older children read the clue on their own and find the answer.

Play it at home

No screen needed: a few toys or a picture book are enough.

  • Open any picture book and ask "Where is the dog?" Let your child point and say the word.
  • Swap roles: your child gives you a clue in English ("It's red. It's on the table.") and you find it.
  • Keep it short. Five words, then a high five.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need to read to play?

No. Younger children play by listening. Written clues come in at the higher levels, when your child is already reading.

Why one picture and not word cards?

Seeing a word in a scene gives it a place and a story. Children remember "the kite above the tree" better than a card on its own.

Play it in a live lesson

This game is part of every Flalingo kids game lesson. Your child plays it with a teacher on the same screen, using the words of their own unit.
