What Makes Students Book a Tutor? Lessons from 656 Tutor Profiles

Flalingo Team 30.10.2026
What makes students book a tutor: findings from 656 tutor profiles

Tutors whose profiles had no weak spots got 23% more bookings than expected. Tutors with five or more weak spots got 28% fewer. That is a 1.7x gap, and most of it comes down to one thing: your intro video.

We wanted to answer a simple question for every tutor on Flalingo: when a new student opens your profile, what makes them book a lesson with you? So we looked at the data.

  • 200,000+ profile visits by new students, from April to October 2026
  • 656 tutor profiles, each with its photo, bio and video cover image
  • 627 intro videos, frame by frame, plus a transcript of the first 40 seconds of each

For every profile we checked whether the student booked a lesson with that tutor within 7 days. Then we compared what the best-performing profiles do differently. Below is what we found, with the numbers, and a checklist you can use today.

The headline: every weak spot costs you

We counted weak spots from the criteria below: things like a vertical or blurry video, no eye contact, a cover image without a smile, a blurry photo or a very short bio. The fewer weak spots, the more bookings.

1. Your intro video matters most

The video is where students make up their minds. Students who opened a tutor's video booked that tutor more often than students who didn't, and the differences between tutors showed up mainly among students who watched. These video habits had the biggest effect:

  • Look into the camera. Tutors who rarely looked at the lens got 41% fewer bookings than expected. Tutors who kept eye contact got 5% more.
  • Be warm and energetic. Videos that felt flat or distant got 34% fewer bookings. Warm, smiling videos got 8% more.
  • Make it sharp. Blurry or low-resolution videos got 19% fewer bookings. Very sharp videos got 24% more. 1080p and above did best.
  • Film in landscape. Vertical phone videos got 20% fewer bookings than horizontal ones.
  • Start talking right away. Tutors who said 100–130 words in the first 40 seconds got 22% more bookings. Tutors who said 40–70 words got 11% fewer. Skip the silent or music intro and speak naturally and fluently.
  • Light your face and center yourself. Well-lit videos got 10% more bookings. Poorly framed videos got 11% fewer.
  • Show how you teach. Tutors who used their hands, a whiteboard, flashcards or a book got 4% more bookings. Tutors who showed real lesson materials got 12% more.
  • Explain your lessons and invite the student. Videos that described how lessons work, or ended with an invitation to book, did slightly better.
  • Keep it at least 45 seconds. Very short videos got 7% fewer bookings. Videos of 1.5–2.5 minutes got 13% more.

2. Your video cover image

The cover image is the still picture students see before they press play. A clear, smiling face works best.

  • Covers with an open smile got 9% more bookings than expected. Covers without a smile got 13% fewer.
  • Covers where the face wasn't clearly visible got 21% fewer bookings.
  • High-quality, bright covers got 13% more bookings. Blurry, dark or oddly cropped covers got 19% fewer.

3. Your profile photo

Your photo appears on your card in every list and on your profile. It doesn't need to be professional, but it can't be weak.

  • Sharp beats blurry. Blurry photos got 15% fewer bookings than expected and were also clicked less in the list. Sharp photos got 8% more.
  • Keep the background simple. Busy, cluttered backgrounds got 18% fewer bookings.
  • Smile. Photos with an open smile got 6% more bookings. Photos without a smile got 7% fewer.
  • Show your face. Photos without a visible face, such as a landscape or a logo, got almost half the expected bookings.

4. Your bio

Students read your bio after the video. A short or hard-to-read bio costs you bookings.

  • Write enough. Bios under 500 characters got 31% fewer bookings than expected. Bios over 1,200 characters got 10% more. Aim for 1,000–1,500.
  • Use short paragraphs. Hard-to-read walls of text got 14% fewer bookings.
  • Talk about the student. Bios that only described the tutor got 11% fewer bookings. Say what the student will learn and how you will help.
  • Name your strengths. Bios that named 3–4 specialties, such as kids, conversation, business English or exams, got 7% more bookings. A short personal touch helped a little too.

5. What didn't matter

Some common advice made no clear difference to bookings, so don't spend your energy here:

  • Opening your video with a greeting
  • Saying your name at the start of the video
  • Listing your certificates or years of experience in the video
  • The type of background (home, plain wall or classroom all did about the same, as long as it was tidy)
  • How loud your audio was
  • What you wore in your photo, or whether it was a selfie
  • Listing certificates in your bio

6. Strong profiles keep students longer

A better profile doesn't just bring more first lessons. It brings students who stay. Among the tutors with the strongest profiles, 40% of new students took 4 or more lessons in their first 30 days, compared with 27% for the weakest profiles. A clear, honest profile helps students choose a tutor who is right for them.

How we measured

  • What we counted: whether a new student booked a lesson with a tutor within 7 days of first opening that tutor's profile.
  • A fair comparison: for each tutor we worked out how many bookings to expect, based on how likely those particular students were to book in general and how many open slots the tutor had that week. Every result above is relative to that expectation, so tutors with lots of free time or very motivated visitors don't get an unfair head start.
  • How profiles were scored: each photo, bio, cover image, set of video frames and video transcript was scored on a fixed scale by an AI reviewer that didn't know how many bookings the tutor had. We checked that repeat scores of the same profile agreed. We never scored appearance, age, gender or ethnicity, only things a tutor can change.
  • Limits: this shows which profiles do better, not proof that changing one item will produce the same result for every tutor. Great tutors may also make great videos. Still, the pattern was clear and consistent across hundreds of tutors.
