Why the Flalingo English Placement Test?

Some online placement tests primarily focus on grammar, vocabulary, or multiple-choice questions. For example, correctly filling in the blank in the sentence “I ____ to school yesterday.” can give an idea about your English knowledge; however, it alone does not show how you use the language in a real communication setting.

Communicative competence encompasses not only knowing grammar rules but also being able to use the language appropriately and effectively in different communication situations. How Does the English Placement Test Work?

The test is completed in a few basic steps.

The adult placement test begins with 8 adaptive multiple-choice questions. The difficulty level of the questions may vary depending on the answers you provide.

Answering the questions without outside help helps the result reflect your current English knowledge more accurately.

Step 2: Sign Up or Log In

After the written section, you will be asked to sign up or log in to your existing account to continue.

Step 3: Complete the Speaking Tasks If Necessary

Depending on the flow of the test, short speaking tasks may be unlocked. If a speaking task is unlocked, you must grant your browser microphone access.

The speaking section may not be unlocked for every user. Therefore, a test result where you did not complete speaking tasks does not mean your speaking skills were evaluated.

Step 4: Review Your Result

Once the test is completed, you can review your level estimate and the evaluations regarding the sections you completed.

Who Is Our English Placement Test Suitable For?

Flalingo offers different assessment flows for adults and children.

Adults: Individual users who want to see their current English level and determine a starting point for their study plan can use the adult placement test.

Children: The children's test features different assessment flows for the 4–6 and 7–12 age groups based on age and English reading readiness. Users aged 13 and older are directed to the adult test.

What Are the Technical Requirements for the Test?

You can use the Flalingo placement test on a phone or computer with an internet connection. If a speaking task is unlocked, you must grant microphone access.

Since a specific browser brand or version is not explicitly required in the current publicly available test guide, it should not be assumed that a particular browser such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox is supported.

What Is in the Results Report?

When evaluating your test result, it is important to pay attention to which sections you have completed. The areas included in the report may vary depending on the tasks completed.

• CEFR Level Estimate: Helps you correlate your English level with one of the A1–C2 reference levels.

• Written Section Assessment: Your performance on the written tasks you have completed is included in the evaluation.

• Speaking Assessment: If you completed the speaking tasks, areas such as fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, and intonation may be included in the report. If you did not complete the speaking tasks, your speaking skills are not considered to have been evaluated.

• Next Steps: By evaluating your result alongside your learning goal, you can determine which areas to focus on.

Instead of viewing your level result merely as a letter and a number, you can use it to determine your next study goal.

There is no fixed timeframe applicable to everyone for advancing to the next level. Your starting level, study frequency, goals, the feedback you receive, and how actively you use English can all affect your progress.

Microphone, Voice Data, and Privacy

When a speaking task is unlocked, microphone permission is required, and the spoken responses you provide may be processed as part of the assessment. In the children's test, a microphone is also required if the selected flow includes speaking tasks; however, a microphone is not required in a flow consisting solely of listening and visual selection tasks.

In the individual flow of the children's test, you will be asked to continue with a parent account to access the detailed report.

To learn whether audio recordings are stored, the retention period if any, the recipient groups to whom personal data may be transferred, and your rights concerning personal data, Flalingo’s current Privacy Policy and Personal Data Protection Clarification Text should be reviewed prior to the test.

Since current publicly available guides regarding the placement test do not disclose the exact retention period for audio recordings or the specific third-party service providers to whom they are transferred, no unverified duration or service name should be provided regarding this matter.

EF SET, on the other hand, offers a 50-minute reading and listening test, as well as a 90-minute reading, listening, speaking, and writing assessment. Both options are free and provide an EF SET Certificate.

The main question here should not be “Which test is better?” but rather “Which test suits my current needs?”. A quick initial estimate and a longer, more comprehensive assessment serve different purposes.
