Best Online English Courses in Azerbaijan (2026): 7 Platforms Compared
⚠️ Last updated: October 2026
Prices, ratings and terms were checked in October 2026. Platforms can change their rates, so check the official page before you pay.

Most adults in Azerbaijan looking for the best online English courses aren't starting from zero. They know their grammar from school, from university and sometimes from years of lessons with a private tutor. What trips them up is building a sentence in English fast enough, whether in a job interview, on a call with a colleague abroad or in the IELTS speaking test. In the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 report, Azerbaijan ranks 94th out of 123 countries and, with a score of 454, falls into the "low" proficiency band. Baku does a little better at 464. Of the skills measured, listening scores lowest, at 435.

The way the market is set up doesn't make the choice any easier. On one side are hundreds of local tutors offering lessons for 5-30 manat on listing sites such as kurslar.az and repetitor.az. On the other are international platforms that show their prices in dollars or manat. Because schooling is split into Azerbaijani-language and Russian-language sectors, many learners also think about which language they'd like grammar explained in during the first few months. For those who understand Turkish comfortably, working with Turkish teams is an added convenience.

When comparing the seven options, we gave the most weight to one question. Does the lesson format actually get you talking? A study by Merrill Swain and Sharon Lapkin, published in Applied Linguistics in 1995, shows that when learners try to put an idea into words, they notice the gaps in their own knowledge and start thinking about the language in order to fill them. A lesson spent only listening never creates that moment. Below, we set out prices in manat, teaching language and refund terms side by side, using the same criteria for every option.

!

Short answer

Our overall pick is Flalingo: a regular teacher, a FLAI report after every lesson, payment in manat, a 30-day unconditional refund and no auto-renewal. Preply suits learners who want a teacher who can explain things in Azerbaijani or Turkish, Cambly those after native-speaker conversation without booking, italki anyone who wants lessons with no commitment, EnglishDom those looking for a package with speaking clubs included, and British Council learners who want certified group classes.

How Did We Evaluate the Platforms?

Teacher quality and matching
Do teachers have teacher training, and does the platform match you with the right one?
Curriculum and CEFR alignment
Is there a structured progression from one level to the next?
Share of speaking practice
Does the lesson format move you from listener to speaker?
Progress visibility
Do you get a measurable report or regular feedback?
Flexibility
Do lesson times suit Baku time, and how do cancellations and instant lessons work?
Practical factors
Is the price transparent, and how do trial lessons, refunds and auto-renewal work?
Teaching language support (specific to Azerbaijan)
Can you choose a teacher who explains grammar in Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian when you need it?
Methodology note: We checked prices and terms mainly on the platforms' official pages in October 2026. Where we couldn't check a manat price directly (Preply, italki, Cambly and Flalingo's package table), we converted the amounts at the Central Bank of Azerbaijan's official rate for 30 September 2026: 1 USD = 1.70 AZN, 1 TRY = 0.0347 AZN. Your bank's conversion fee may change the final amount slightly. Ratings are taken from Trustpilot and Google, and reviews not originally written in English have been translated. Disclosure: Flalingo publishes this article and is included in the list.

Teaching Language, Payment and Refund Terms

For a student taking online English lessons from Azerbaijan, two questions often come up even before price. Can the teacher explain things in Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian when needed? And which currency will the payment be taken in? The manat has held steady at around 1.70 to the dollar for a long time, so the exchange rate risk when paying in dollars is low. If your card is in manat, though, your bank may charge a fee for foreign currency transactions.

When you're choosing one-to-one English lessons, also check the refund period and whether the package renews automatically before you pay. The table below brings these terms together.

Platform Explanations in Azerbaijani / Turkish / Russian Payment currency Trial lesson Refunds Auto-renewal
Flalingo Lessons in English. Level test in Azerbaijani, support in Turkish or English Manat (₼) 25 min, ≈3.5 ₼ 30 days, unconditional None

#1 - Flalingo: A Regular Teacher and an AI Report After Every Lesson

Flalingo combines live one-to-one lessons with an AI-powered tracking system. Lessons last 25 or 50 minutes. The teachers are native speakers who have been through teacher training, and only one in every 73 applicants is accepted.

There are two reasons it tops the list. First, students usually stay with the same teacher, and the chance of booking that teacher again is over 90%. Second, progress is measured after every lesson. For learners joining from Azerbaijan, the free level test is in Azerbaijani, prices are shown in manat and payment is accepted in manat. You can contact the support team in Turkish or English, while the lessons themselves are entirely in English.

The platform suits adults who understand what they read but get stuck when speaking, or who are aiming for business English or IELTS. If that sounds familiar, our article on how to overcome the fear of speaking English is a good place to start. You can see how a lesson is put together on the Flalingo demo page.

Standout Feature: A Closed Learning Loop

The FLAI AI coach analyses every lesson and builds its report around three areas: your grammar mistakes alongside the correct versions, your words per minute together with how often you pause and use filler words, and your vocabulary by CEFR level. Those mistakes become Flomework exercises, and in the next lesson the same teacher looks at the report and picks up where you left off. We didn't see this link between lesson, practice and next lesson working in the same way on any other platform on the list.

Key Features

  • 25- or 50-minute live one-to-one lessons, 1-7 lessons a week
  • Smart Matching: a personal shortlist of 22-30 teachers based on 18 data points
  • FLAI report: analysis of accuracy, fluency and vocabulary
  • Flomework exercises: Vocabulary Boost, Grammar Repair and Shadow Lesson modules
  • FLAI Speaking: AI speaking practice between lessons, free for the first 7 days
  • Smart Personalized Materials: 30 books, more than 490 units, Everyday English (7 levels), English at Work (6 levels) and an exam collection
  • IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and OET preparation, plus an IELTS mock exam
  • A personal education consultant, 24/7 support in Turkish or English and WhatsApp, and cancellation up to 8 hours before a lesson

Pros

  • ✓ Teacher continuity above 90%
  • ✓ Only one in every 73 applicants is accepted
  • ✓ A FLAI report after every lesson and exercises built from your mistakes
  • ✓ Its own materials: 30 books and more than 490 units
  • ✓ 30-day unconditional refund, no auto-renewal
  • ✓ Free level test in Azerbaijani (5-8 minutes, A1-C1)
  • ✓ Prices and payment in manat, support in Turkish or English
  • ✓ Speaking practice between lessons with FLAI Speaking
  • ✓ If you don't like the trial lesson, a new teacher or a full refund

Cons

  • ✕ FLAI reports and personalised exercises only come with 6- and 12-month packages
  • ✕ The mobile app lags behind the web experience, and development is ongoing
  • ✕ Live lessons need a stable internet connection and a reasonably powerful device

Price

Viewed from Azerbaijan, Flalingo shows its prices in manat and accepts payment in manat. The amounts below were calculated from the Turkish rate at the Central Bank's exchange rate for 30 September 2026 (1 TRY = 0.0347 AZN), so the manat price you see on the website may differ slightly.

I joined Flalingo to prepare for the IELTS exam. I receive one-on-one lessons from a native English-speaking teacher and also follow the IELTS course on the platform. The customer service representatives are particularly helpful and readily available when needed. Overall, I am satisfied.

I've been using Flalingo for a while now and I'm particularly impressed with the quality of the instructors. Thanks to one-on-one lessons with teachers who are fluent in English, my speaking practice has visibly improved. The lessons are both fun and educational. I definitely recommend it.

#2 - Preply: Tutors Who Speak Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian

Preply is a large online marketplace that connects tutors with students. As of October 2026, it lists 45,968 English tutors. Each tutor sets their own price, hours and teaching method. The model is built on subscriptions, so you choose one tutor and pay in 28-day cycles.

For Azerbaijan, Preply's strongest feature is the "Also speaks" filter. It narrows the list to English tutors who also speak Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian. In the profiles we looked at, for example, English tutors from Azerbaijan whose first language is Azerbaijani and who speak Turkish at C2 level were charging $18-25 for a 50-minute lesson. For a complete beginner who wants to hear grammar explained in their own language in the first few months, that's a real advantage.

There's no shared curriculum at platform level, though. The quality and content of the lessons depend entirely on the tutor you pick. The subscription renews automatically, and lessons you don't schedule within a cycle don't carry over to the next one.

Standout Feature: Language, Price and Specialism Filters

You can search by price range, native language, country of birth, specialism (business English, IELTS, interview preparation), availability and the other languages a tutor speaks. A beginner looking for someone to explain grammar in Azerbaijani and a manager who wants to rehearse presentations can both find a match in the same search. On the teaching-language criterion, this is the widest choice on the list.

Key Features

  • Price, native language, specialism, availability and "Also speaks" filters
  • Paid 25- or 50-minute trial lesson
  • Subscription tied to one tutor, 28-day cycle
  • Option to pause the subscription for up to 20 days in each cycle
  • Free replacement if the tutor isn't a good fit
  • Option to move unused lessons to a new tutor
  • Lesson Insights summary after each lesson

Pros

  • ✓ A very large pool of tutors, with options for every budget
  • ✓ English tutors who speak Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian
  • ✓ A subscription tied to one tutor keeps lessons consistent
  • ✓ A short Lesson Insights summary after each lesson
  • ✓ 4.4/5 on Trustpilot (25,504 reviews)

Cons

  • ✕ Lessons not scheduled within a cycle are lost at renewal
  • ✕ The subscription renews automatically, and you need to cancel at least a day before the cycle ends
  • ✕ Trial lessons are paid
  • ✕ No shared curriculum at platform level, so quality depends on the tutor

Price

On Preply, tutors set their own prices and rates are shown in dollars.

  • 50-minute lesson: from $3 to $40 and above (≈5-68+ ₼)
  • Average hourly rate for native-speaker tutors: $22-30 depending on the country (≈37-51 ₼)
  • Examples of tutors from Azerbaijan who speak Azerbaijani and Turkish: $18-25 (≈31-43 ₼)
  • Trial lessons are paid, and the amount depends on the tutor's rate

Prices last checked: October 2026.

Who Is It Best For?

  • A1-A2 adults who want to hear grammar explained in Azerbaijani or Turkish in the first few months
  • Learners with a narrow goal such as IELTS, a job interview or field-specific English
  • People who have time to compare tutor profiles
  • Anyone who can plan their lessons at the start of each cycle

I have been taking lessons on the Preply platform for the last two months, and my teacher, Rodrigo, is excellent. Besides great teachers, Preply has excellent customer service. I had a subscription charge issue, and Nadia reached out to me and resolved it. I am pleasantly surprised by the level of customer support and teaching this…

My tutor is amazing My tutor is amazing , she is patient and goes through everything, she has really brought the confidence out in me. The lesson times fit around my life and the lessons are fun, interesting and educational

#3 - Cambly: Native-Speaker Conversation Without Booking

Cambly is a platform built around 30-minute conversation lessons with native-speaker tutors. You open the app, and if a tutor is online, the conversation starts within a few minutes. If you'd rather have a fixed time, you can also book lessons in advance.

There are three plans: Small Groups, Private+ and Pro. On all three, the tutors are native English speakers only.

From an Azerbaijani point of view, this cuts both ways. It's a good setting for hearing different accents and building listening skills, and since listening is the weakest skill in the EF EPI, the benefit is clear. But you can't choose a tutor who explains grammar in Azerbaijani or Turkish, and there's no guarantee of a regular teacher. We look at the difference between Cambly and italki in more detail in our Cambly vs italki comparison.

Standout Feature: Instant Lessons 24/7

You can start talking to an online tutor at any hour of the day or night, without booking. For anyone who works shifts or whose hours change often, that convenience can settle the decision. On the Private+ and Pro plans, each lesson's recording and transcript are saved, so you can go back over your own mistakes after the conversation.

Key Features

  • 30-minute lessons, 1-5 a week depending on the plan
  • Native-speaker tutors only, with a choice of accents
  • Instant lessons 24/7, with optional advance booking
  • Small Groups: 1 tutor, 1-2 students, ages 21+
  • Private+: lesson recordings, transcripts, automatic feedback and Cambly courses
  • Pro: Pro tutors, structured lessons, goal-focused feedback and personal practice recommendations
  • Unlimited pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary practice on all plans

Pros

  • ✓ Instant conversation 24/7, no booking needed
  • ✓ A large pool of native-speaker tutors and a range of accents
  • ✓ Lesson recordings and transcripts that are handy for review (Private+ and Pro)
  • ✓ 30-minute lessons from ≈3.6 ₼ on the Small Groups plan
  • ✓ Full refund within 7 days on your first plan

Cons

  • ✕ No guarantee of a regular teacher
  • ✕ No option to choose a tutor who explains in Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian
  • ✕ Weak structured CEFR progression, with conversation-heavy lessons
  • ✕ Plans renew automatically, and if you cancel a discounted plan early, the days you've used are charged at the undiscounted price
  • ✕ Trustpilot rating of 2.0/5, with 44% of reviews at 1 star

Price

Cambly's prices vary by country. The amounts below were converted from Cambly's Turkish lira rates at the Central Bank's exchange rate for 30 September 2026. Viewed from Azerbaijan, you may see a different currency and amount.

  • Small Groups: 30-minute lesson ≈3.6-7.0 ₼, from ≈16 ₼ a month (12-month plan, 1 lesson a week)
  • Private+: ≈11.5-22.7 ₼ per lesson, from ≈100 ₼ a month (12-month plan, 2 lessons a week)
  • Pro: ≈17.0-33.5 ₼ per lesson, from ≈147 ₼ a month
  • Full refund within 7 days on the first plan, after which the days used are charged at the undiscounted price

Prices last checked: October 2026.

Who Is It Best For?

  • Adults at B1 or above who can start a conversation themselves
  • Learners working on fluency, accent and listening
  • People who work shifts or irregular hours
  • Those who need little grammar explanation

User Reviews

Cambly has a 2.0/5 rating on Trustpilot (264 reviews, October 2026). Opinions are split between the two extremes, with 41% of reviews at 5 stars and 44% at 1 star. The two positive reviews below date from 2024 and 2023, so read them alongside the overall rating.

Mind-blowing community of native-speaking tutors. I would recommend talking to a few tutors during the first week to find which one you vibe the most with and then book recurring lessons with that person.

#4 - italki: Pay Lesson by Lesson, No Commitment

italki is a marketplace platform that connects language teachers with students. It has 4,250 English teachers, who fall into two groups: Professional Teachers with formal teacher training and certificates, and Community Tutors, who focus on conversation and usually cost less. You buy credits and book lessons one at a time or as a package.

There's no subscription here, no automatic payment and no "use it this month or lose it" pressure. For adults who can't keep up a weekly rhythm because of exam periods, business trips or a seasonal work schedule, it's a comfortable model. With the "Speaks" filter, you can find English teachers who also speak Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian.

In return, the structure is up to you. The platform has no shared curriculum or progress report, and you buy your credits in dollars. If you want to build up your speaking on your own between lessons, our article on how to improve your English speaking skills has practical steps.

Standout Feature: Pay per Lesson with No Commitment

There's no monthly package, no automatic payment and no unused lessons expiring. You top up credits and book a lesson when you're ready. Trial lessons come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and within 48 hours of the lesson you can ask for your credits back, up to twice.

Key Features

  • Pay per lesson, no subscription
  • Choice of Professional Teachers and Community Tutors
  • "Speaks" filter: Azerbaijani, Turkish, Russian and other languages
  • Trial lessons, usually 30 minutes, with most teachers
  • Lesson packages (must be completed within 6 months)
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee on trial lessons

Pros

  • ✓ No commitment, no auto-renewal and no expiring lessons
  • ✓ A wide price range, from conversation tutors to certified specialists
  • ✓ You can filter for teachers who speak Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian
  • ✓ Satisfaction guarantee on trial lessons
  • ✓ 4.4/5 on Trustpilot (14,980 reviews)

Cons

  • ✕ Credits are bought in dollars, and your bank may charge a fee on a manat card
  • ✕ Purchased credits can't be refunded as cash
  • ✕ Quality depends on the teacher, with no shared curriculum or report
  • ✕ Lesson packages have to be finished within 6 months

Price

  • Hourly lessons: from $4, rising to $60 and above with experienced teachers (≈7-102+ ₼)
  • Trial lessons: usually $5-15 (≈8.5-25.5 ₼), more with some teachers
  • Credits are charged in dollars with every purchase

Prices last checked: October 2026.

Who Is It Best For?

  • Adults at A2 or above who can compare teacher profiles themselves
  • Learners after free conversation, a particular accent or a short spell of intensive preparation

Excellent platform for finding CELPIP tutors I had a fantastic experience using italki to find and compare tutors for my CELPIP preparation. The platform makes it incredibly easy to evaluate different teachers, read reviews, and book sessions that fit my schedule. Finding specialized tutors really helped me understand the test component scoring criteria better and feel more confident. Highly recommended for exam prep!

Great teachers; good tool with some fine tuning Nice platform and great teachers at very competitive prices! Furthermore you have an amazing range of languages you can learn. However regarding the platform; I erroneously mixed up two on my different email adresses when I registered. I called immediately the helpdesk and it seems impossible to link both, otherwise I might loose my course credits!? A bad point for the platform!

#5 - EnglishDom: Speaking Clubs and a Ready-Made Programme

EnglishDom is an online English school that has been running since 2010. According to its website, it has taught more than 75,000 students and works with more than 1,100 teachers, each with over 5 years of experience. It has a separate Azerbaijani-language page for Azerbaijan, which shows prices directly in manat.

EnglishDom is best known among Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking audiences, and it also runs a large blog in Russian. That can make it feel familiar to students who studied in the Russian-language sector or are used to explanations in Russian. The website says you can choose a local teacher or a native speaker, but it doesn't state clearly which language lessons will be explained in. It's worth asking about this in the free first lesson.

At the centre of the format is the ED Class platform, which brings lessons, homework, an interactive textbook, vocabulary practice and video calls together in one app. One-to-one lessons last 50 minutes, and on top of that there are speaking clubs for A1-C1 levels with up to 12 participants. Within the package, the clubs work as a separate English speaking course.

Standout Feature: Speaking Clubs Included in the Package

The 3- and 6-month packages include 240 or 480 speaking clubs and an AI dictionary as a bonus. Clubs are split by level from A1 to C1, groups have up to 12 participants, and there's also a short 15-minute "Coffee Talk" format. You get the chance to use what you learn in a one-to-one lesson in a group that same week.

Key Features

  • 50-minute one-to-one lessons (ED Class platform)
  • Choice of a local teacher or a native speaker
  • Free first lesson to set your level and goals
  • More than 20 programmes: from Elementary to C1, business, IT and IELTS
  • Interactive textbook and homework
  • ED Words app: more than 350 ready-made word sets
  • AI dictionary
  • Speaking clubs (up to 12 people, A1-C1)
  • Up to 2 free cancellations a month, with the option to freeze lessons

Pros

  • ✓ Prices shown openly and directly in manat
  • ✓ Free first lesson
  • ✓ Speaking clubs included in 3- and 6-month packages
  • ✓ Lessons, homework and dictionary in one app
  • ✓ Up to two free cancellations a month

Cons

  • ✕ Refund terms aren't clearly shown on the website
  • ✕ The website doesn't say clearly whether you can choose a teacher who explains in Azerbaijani
  • ✕ No information on a measurable post-lesson report
  • ✕ Most reviews come from other markets, with few local reviews from Azerbaijan

Price

  • 8 lessons (paid monthly): 20 ₼ per lesson, 160 ₼ a month
  • 24 lessons (paid every 3 months): 18 ₼ per lesson (-10%), 432 ₼ in total, plus a 3-month bonus of 240 speaking clubs and the AI dictionary
  • 60 lessons (paid every 6 months): 16 ₼ per lesson (-20%), 960 ₼ in total, plus a 6-month bonus of 480 speaking clubs and the AI dictionary

Prices last checked: October 2026.

Who Is It Best For?

  • A1-B2 adults who want a ready-made programme and platform
  • Those who want to pay in manat
  • Learners who want to combine one-to-one lessons with group speaking
  • Students who studied in the Russian-language sector and are used to a Russian-speaking environment

Good school. There are lots like it these days, but they really do try to offer an individual approach, and the platform is convenient. There's plenty of material. The teachers are competent and stay polite even when you're being really dense.

I'd been looking for my teacher for a long time and I've finally found them! The atmosphere in the lessons is very relaxed, which really mattered for me to start speaking. The material is presented simply and clearly, without any unnecessary waffle. I really like that the focus is on modern spoken English. I'd recommend it to anyone who's afraid of making mistakes. You'll definitely get support here! #englishfreedom

#6 - British Council: An International Brand and Certified Group Classes

The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. In Azerbaijan, it runs the IELTS and Aptis exams and offers free resources such as the LearnEnglish websites and the EnglishScore test. Face-to-face courses for adults in Baku haven't opened yet. The organisation says it will launch them "soon" and has opened a registration form for anyone interested.

For now, the main course you can join from Azerbaijan is English Online. Lessons take place live on Zoom. Group lessons last 55 minutes with up to 10 participants, and 25-minute one-to-one lessons are available on the Gold and Platinum plans. Learners who complete the course receive a British Council certificate showing their CEFR level and lesson hours.

The brand's credibility and the certificate are its strong points. But the format doesn't give you continuity with one teacher, and the explanations are in English. If you're planning to study abroad or take part in Erasmus, our article on preparing your English for real life abroad may also be useful.

Standout Feature: A Certificate with Your CEFR Level

Learners who finish English Online receive a British Council certificate showing their CEFR level and hours of study, along with shareable digital badges. If you want to show your level on your CV or LinkedIn profile with the signature of a recognised organisation, this counts for a lot. I met a lot of international friends here. Class is giving us a chance to speak in break out room with partner, which build your confident in English speaking. In parallel, I can check my pronunciation by seeing if my friends understand.

#7 - Local Private Tutors (kurslar.az and Others): Low Prices, Variable Quality

Many people learning English in Azerbaijan still start with a local tutor. Hundreds of teachers offer one-to-one and group lessons on listing sites such as kurslar.az and repetitor.az, and repetitor.az alone has close to 1,100 English profiles. Lessons can take place online, at the tutor's address or in the student's home.

Language is this option's biggest strength. Tutors from the Azerbaijani and Russian sectors explain grammar in the student's own language and know the requirements of exams such as the school-leaving exam, the master's admission exam and IELTS well. The price is also the lowest on the list.

The weak point is the lack of a standard. No platform checks the tutor's teaching qualifications, the lesson programme or the way progress is measured. Payment, cancellation and rescheduling terms are also often settled by verbal agreement.

Standout Feature: Explanations in Your Native Language and Face-to-Face Lessons

Here you can hear grammar explained in Azerbaijani or Russian, have lessons face to face at an address close to home and pay in cash in manat. For someone starting from scratch who wants to understand the basic structures in their own language during the first few months, it's an easy way in.

Key Features

  • One-to-one or group lessons
  • Online, at the tutor's address or in the student's home
  • Explanations in Azerbaijani or Russian
  • Preparation for the school-leaving exam, master's admission and IELTS
  • Lessons usually last 60-90 minutes, 2-3 times a week
  • Some tutors offer a free or discounted first lesson

Pros

  • ✓ The lowest prices on the list
  • ✓ Grammar explained in your native language
  • ✓ Face-to-face lessons available
  • ✓ Good knowledge of local exam requirements

Cons

  • ✕ Quality varies a lot from tutor to tutor, and nobody vets them
  • ✕ Usually no measurable progress report
  • ✕ Speaking practice often gets less time than grammar and test preparation
  • ✕ Payment and cancellation terms aren't protected by a written contract
  • ✕ Limited speaking practice with native speakers

Price

  • repetitor.az: 5-30 ₼ per lesson
  • kurslar.az: group lessons at 30-40 ₼ a month, one-to-one packages from 60-70 ₼ a month, and specialised programmes such as IELTS and business English at 200-300 ₼ a month

Prices last checked: October 2026.

Who Is It Best For?

  • A1 adults starting from scratch who want grammar explained in their native language
  • People with a budget under 100 ₼ a month
  • Those who prefer face-to-face lessons
  • Learners with a local goal such as the school-leaving or master's admission exam

User Reviews

We don't include review cards in this section. There's no single brand here, just hundreds of individual tutors, and a review of one tutor tells you nothing about another tutor's lessons. So rather than reviews, what matters is how you check a tutor:

  • Ask for a trial lesson and see for yourself how much of it is spent speaking
  • Ask for a document confirming the tutor's own level (an IELTS score, CELTA or a similar certificate)
  • Find out which CEFR level the programme will take you from and to, and how your progress will be checked
  • Agree on payment, cancellation and missed-lesson terms in writing, even if it's only by message
  • Read the reviews on the listing site and, if you can, ask someone who has studied with that tutor

Which Combination of Features Suits You?

Put the seven options side by side and no single "best" emerges for everyone. A more useful question is which combination of features fits your goal, your budget and your working routine.

  • A regular teacher, measurable progress, payment in manat and a 30-day refund: Flalingo
  • A teacher who explains in Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian: Preply
  • Native-speaker conversation at any hour, with no booking: Cambly
  • No commitment, for intensive study in bursts: italki
  • A ready-made programme with speaking clubs included in the package: EnglishDom
  • A recognised certificate and a group setting: British Council
  • The lowest budget and face-to-face lessons: local private tutors

We'd add one piece of advice specific to Azerbaijan. If you're at A1, spend the first 2-3 months with a teacher who explains the core grammar in your native language, then move on to a speaking-focused format. Before you pay, get it in writing which currency you'll be charged in, how long the refund period is and whether the package renews automatically. If your goal is business English, our list of the best online business English courses will also help you narrow down the choice.

Our own pick is a few lessons a week with a regular teacher, plus a report after every lesson that shows how far you've come. Those two things ease the fear of speaking and make progress visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much does an online English course cost (₼)?

In Azerbaijan in 2026, a 25-50 minute online English lesson costs roughly 3.5 ₼ to 70 ₼ depending on the platform and package, and more with some professional teachers. The cheapest options are Cambly's Small Groups plan (≈3.6-7 ₼) and local tutors (5-30 ₼). A 25-minute lesson costs ≈11-28 ₼ on Flalingo, a 50-minute lesson costs 16-20 ₼ on EnglishDom, and Preply ranges from ≈5 ₼ to 68 ₼. When you compare, look at the price per lesson and the lesson length rather than the monthly total.

2. Local private tutor or online platform?

If you're starting from scratch on a tight budget, a local tutor is a good start. If you want to build your speaking and measure progress, a platform gives you more. A local tutor explains grammar in Azerbaijani or Russian and charges 5-30 ₼ per lesson, but there's usually no quality check or progress report. Platforms standardise teacher selection, refund terms and post-lesson feedback. The route that works for many people is to use both in turn, covering the basics with a local tutor in the first months and then moving to a speaking-focused format on a platform.

3. Can you find a teacher who explains in Azerbaijani or Turkish?

Yes, and Preply and italki offer the widest choice. On both platforms, you can use the language filter to find English teachers who also speak Azerbaijani, Turkish or Russian. On Preply, tutors like this from Azerbaijan charge around $18-25 (≈31-43 ₼) for a 50-minute lesson. Local tutors also explain in Azerbaijani or Russian. On Flalingo, lessons are in English, but the level test is in Azerbaijani and you can contact the support team in Turkish or English. On Cambly and British Council, explanations are in English only.

4. Do you need a foreign (native-speaker) teacher?

If your goals are speaking and listening, a native English speaker with teacher training usually gets results faster. The reason is simple. You speak throughout the lesson without falling back on your native language, and you hear pronunciation live. In the EF EPI 2025, Azerbaijan's lowest score is in listening (435), and lessons with a native-speaker teacher target exactly that gap. At A1, though, hearing grammar explained in your own language can make the first months easier. Bear in mind that being a native speaker isn't enough on its own. The teacher also has to know how to teach.

5. How should you plan general English before IELTS?

It's more efficient to start IELTS preparation once you've reached B1, because exam strategy can't make up for a weak general foundation. Cambridge English estimates that A2 takes 180-200 hours of guided learning, B1 350-400 and B2 500-600. In IELTS, bands 5.5-6.5 correspond to B2. In Azerbaijan, certificates such as IELTS and TOEFL at B2 or above are also accepted for doctoral admission. The plan is simple. Work on general speaking and grammar first, then move on to the exam format with IELTS preparation.

6. Can you pay in manat (AZN)?

Yes, on most of the platforms on the list. Viewed from Azerbaijan, Flalingo and British Council English Online show their prices in manat and accept payment in manat, and EnglishDom also lists its rates directly in manat. Local tutors take payment in manat too, often in cash. On Preply and italki, rates are shown in dollars and the amount is converted and charged to your card. In this article we converted Cambly's prices from its Turkish rates into manat, so the currency you see from Azerbaijan may differ. Because the manat has been stable at around 1.70 to the dollar for a long time, the exchange rate risk when paying in dollars is low, but check your bank's foreign transaction fee in advance.
