Best 5 Online OET Preparation Courses

The OET is not a general English exam. It is a profession-specific clinical communication assessment, administered by the Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust (CBLA), and accepted by regulatory bodies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, the UAE, and Singapore. Most councils require a minimum Grade B (350 out of 500) across all four sub-tests. Fail a single sub-test by 20 points, and you sit the whole thing again.

General English teachers cannot prepare you for this. The Writing sub-test requires you to produce a profession-specific letter, typically a referral or discharge letter built from clinical case notes, in exactly the format and register a receiving clinician expects. The Speaking sub-test places you in a role-play scenario where you are the healthcare professional, and the interlocutor is your patient. The criteria include not just language accuracy but empathy, clarity with lay terminology, and structured patient management.

This comparison covers five platforms specifically suited to OET preparation. Each was evaluated across the following criteria:

  • Clinical relevance: Does the platform understand OET's healthcare-specific format, or is it repurposed general test prep?
  • Writing feedback quality: Is the writing correction genuinely expert and profession-specific, or generic?
  • Speaking preparation: Does the platform replicate OET role-play conditions?
  • Tutor or teacher expertise: Are educators OET specialists, ex-examiners, or healthcare-trained?
  • Progress visibility: Can candidates track development toward Grade B across sub-tests?
  • Practical usability: Scheduling, pricing transparency, and trial access.

A note on methodology: OET requirements differ by profession and by target country. Always verify the exact score requirements with the regulatory body you are applying to before selecting a preparation method. This guide reflects the most common requirement of Grade B across all four sub-tests.

#1 Flalingo: Best Overall OET Preparation Platform

Most OET candidates arrive at Flalingo after one of two experiences. They either have tried self-study resources and stalled, or they have worked with a general English tutor who did not understand why their Writing mark kept coming back as a C. The gap between knowing clinical English and demonstrating it in OET's specific task formats is real, and it is almost impossible to close without a tutor who has seen the exam from the inside.

Flalingo's answer to this is structural. Through its Smart Matching algorithm, every OET candidate is paired with a tutor who holds documented expertise in healthcare English, OET task formats, and the clinical communication criteria that examiners apply. Tutors are accepted from only 1 in 73 applicants, and those working in the OET segment carry specific qualification flags for the system: medical or allied health background, OET specialist training, or prior examiner experience.

Standout Feature: Smart Match + Clinical Tutor Pairing

Most platforms let you browse tutors. Flalingo's Smart Matching system finds the tutor whose profile aligns with your profession, your target sub-test weaknesses, and your scheduling needs. An OET-prepared nurse seeking Grade B in Writing will be matched with a tutor experienced in nursing-specific case notes and referral letter formats, not a generalist who happens to list OET in their profile.

    Key Features

    • Smart Match algorithm with OET-specialist and healthcare-background tutor tags
    • FLAI AI coach with clinical language analysis, running after every live session
    • OET sub-test simulation at exams.flalingo.com, with a free simulation included
    • Writing task coaching: case notes to referral letter, with real-time FLAI feedback
    • Speaking roleplay: patient-professional scenarios with tutor acting as interlocutor
    • FLAI clinical vocabulary tracking: measures appropriate register and medical terminology use
    • Flomework: personalised post-session exercises targeting identified sub-test weaknesses
    • Free level assessment at start.flalingo.com
    • 30-day unconditional refund policy, no automatic subscription renewal

    Pros

    • Tutor matching is profession-aware, not just OET-aware; a dentist gets different case note scenarios than a physiotherapist
    • FLAI report after every session shows measurable progress toward Grade B criteria
    • Role-play practice replicates OET Speaking conditions in a low-stakes, feedback-rich environment
    • Fixed tutor model builds familiarity across multiple sessions, which matters in speaking preparation, where rapport affects confidence
    • Free simulation exam removes the guesswork about what test conditions feel like
    • No billing surprises and a clear refund policy reduce financial risk for candidates on tight timelines

    Cons

    • There is room for improvement in the mobile application
    • Live tutor sessions require a reliable internet connection and a device with audio and video capability
    • Top-rated OET-specialist tutors book out quickly during exam season peaks

    Price

Packages run approximately $40–$130 per month, depending on session frequency and package length. A trial session is available. There is no auto-renewal.

Prices last checked: May 2026. Always verify current packages on the platform's website before purchasing.

    Best For

Healthcare professionals who need profession-specific OET preparation and want both a specialist tutor and an AI layer tracking progress between sessions. Particularly well suited to candidates preparing for Writing and Speaking, the two sub-tests where generic platforms consistently underperform.

Flalingo Privilege First of all, I did extensive research before choosing this app. I've even used it on other apps, but Flalingo truly stands out in many ways. Most importantly, you can accompany your chosen tutor until the end of the training. This means you don't have to deal with a different tutor each time. Artificial intelligence uses very detailed analyses, and these truly work. All of the tutors are certified educators. They not only possess native language skills but also have certifications to teach. Artificial intelligence and tutor matching suggest the perfect match for you.

    #2 OET Official

If authenticity is the priority, nothing matches the source. OET Official materials, produced and endorsed by CBLA, the organisation that designs and marks the actual exam, are the closest available proxy for what candidates will face on test day. The official preparation suite includes practice tests built to the same specifications as live exam papers, score descriptors written by the examiners who use them, and role-play resources for the Speaking sub-test.

What official materials do exceptionally well is setting the benchmark. Candidates who do not know what an examiner-approved Grade B referral letter looks like before they start practising will spend weeks calibrating to the wrong standard. Using official materials early in preparation prevents that particular time loss.

The limitation is the absence of personalised instruction. Official resources tell you what the test expects. They do not diagnose why your Writing score is landing at C+ instead of B, or help you adjust your role-play register in real time. For candidates who can self-diagnose and self-correct, official materials alone can be sufficient. Most candidates find they need human feedback alongside them.

    Standout Feature: Examiner-Produced Content

All official practice materials are designed by the same teams that produce live exam papers. The Writing samples marked as Grade B are not approximations; they are the actual standard that examiners apply. No third-party platform can fully replicate this.

    Key Features

    • Official practice tests across all four sub-tests, matched to live exam specifications
    • OET Writing practice with Grade B sample answers and examiner commentary
    • Speaking sub-test role-play materials, profession-specific across 12 healthcare fields
    • Score estimator tools and grade descriptor explanations
    • Accepted as preparation evidence by multiple regulatory bodies

    Pros

    • The only resource with fully authentic, examiner-produced content
    • Profession-specific materials across 12 healthcare fields
    • Direct alignment with live exam format means no adjustment period on test day
    • Free sample materials available before any purchase

    Cons

    • No live instruction or personalised writing feedback
    • Self-directed study requires strong motivation and self-assessment ability
    • Limited diagnostic guidance on why scores fall short of Grade B

    Price

Individual practice tests start from approximately $35–$50 per sub-test. Full preparation bundles vary. Official materials are best used in combination with personalised instruction rather than as a standalone solution.

Prices last checked: May 2026. Always verify current packages on the platform's website before purchasing.

    Best For

Any OET candidate, at any stage of preparation. Official materials work as a starting benchmark, a mid-preparation check, and a final simulation. The question is always what else sits alongside them.

    What Are Users Saying

OET Official has a Trustpilot presence, but it is not a reliable signal in either direction. The profile currently sits at 1.9 out of 5, which sounds damning until you look at the review count: 13 reviews total. That sample is too small to draw any meaningful conclusion about the platform's quality.

For that reason, the OET Official section does not carry a Trustpilot comment in this comparison. Where platforms have meaningful review volumes, those ratings are included and sourced. Where the data is not representative, it is better to say so clearly than to present a number that misleads.

    #3 E2Language OET

E2Language holds a meaningful credential in this space. It is an OET Official Premium Preparation Partner, meaning its content has been reviewed and endorsed by CBLA. That accreditation matters because the OET market contains a significant volume of low-quality third-party materials that teach incorrect formats and misrepresent examiner criteria.

The platform's preparation system combines structured video content, live group classes, and one-to-one tutoring. The Writing correction service is the most consistently praised feature in candidate reviews. For candidates who struggle to self-assess their letters, this cycle of submission and rapid expert correction accelerates improvement in a way that video content alone cannot.

Standout Feature: OET Official Premium Partner Status

E2Language's content has been reviewed and endorsed by the organisation that writes and marks the actual OET. This distinguishes it from the many platforms that teach approximately correct formats, rather than the formats examiners actually use.

    Key Features

    • OET Official Premium Preparation Partner status
    • Video courses covering all four sub-tests, self-paced
    • Live group classes with OET specialist teachers
    • Writing correction service
    • One-to-one tutoring available at additional cost
    • Mock tests modelled on live exam format

    Pros

    • Official endorsement provides confidence in content quality
    • Writing feedback quality is consistently strong across candidate reviews
    • Self-paced structure suits healthcare professionals with irregular shifts

    Cons

    • Live interaction is group-based by default; one-to-one costs extra
    • Post-test consultation is only available in higher-tier packages
    • Speaking preparation is less personalised than writing feedback

    Price

Packages start from approximately $47–$270, depending on course level and add-on options. One-to-one tutoring sessions are priced separately.

Prices last checked: May 2026. Always verify current packages on the platform's website before purchasing.

    Best For

Candidates who benefit from structured video-based learning and want fast, expert writing feedback between live sessions. Particularly suitable for those who are self-disciplined about scheduling their own study but need regular written feedback cycles to improve their letter quality.

E2 materials were a lifesaver for me E2 materials were a lifesaver for me. I was really scared because I had less than two weeks to prepare for the exam, but the classes and the one-on-one tutorial sessions broke everything down in a way that made it easy to understand.

After writing IELTS three times without success, I was finally able to pass my OET on my first attempt. I’m truly happy and grateful that the money I spent on the course was absolutely worth it.

    #4 Swoosh English OET

Swoosh English has been operating in the OET preparation market since around 2013, with a consistently strong reputation among nursing and pharmacy candidates in particular. The platform's structure centres on writing correction, live group classes, profession-specific content, and a community of active candidates working through the exam simultaneously. Over 22,000 students have passed through the programme, according to the platform's own data.

Teachers at Swoosh include experienced OET instructors, some with examiner backgrounds. The profession-specific packaging is thoughtful: a nurse receives nursing case notes and referral letter formats. This level of specificity matters in OET preparation because the marker criteria are applied differently depending on the clinical context.

Standout Feature: Profession-Specific Writing Correction with 24-Hour Turnaround

Swoosh English provides tailored feedback on letters based on your specific profession, not a generic OET template. A pharmacist's drug counselling referral receives different examiner-criteria commentary than a physiotherapist's discharge summary. Combined with a 24-hour response guarantee, this makes Swoosh's writing correction service one of the most practically useful in this comparison.

    Key Features

    • Profession-specific packages for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare fields
    • Writing correction service
    • Video courses across all four sub-tests
    • Live group classes and optional one-to-one sessions
    • Mock exams
    • Community groups with fellow candidates
    • Exam readiness test to assess starting level

    Pros

    • Profession-specific content design
    • Writing correction is fast, detailed, and consistently rated highly by candidates
    • Community element provides accountability and speaking practice partners
    • Teachers have documented OET and examiner experience

    Cons

    • No AI progress analysis between sessions
    • One-to-one sessions are available, but are limited in the standard packages
    • Less recognised internationally than E2Language or official resources

    Price

Packages range from approximately $99–$669 depending on course length and included features. Intensive packages with one-to-one classes sit at the higher end.

Prices last checked: May 2026. Always verify current packages on the platform's website before purchasing.

    Best For

Nurses, doctors, and pharmacists who want profession-specific writing feedback and prefer a structured self-study model with community support. A strong fit for candidates who have already passed Listening and Reading but need to improve Writing and Speaking.

    #5 Preply (OET Tutors)

Preply operates as a global tutor marketplace, and within that pool, there are genuine OET specialists available: tutors with clinical backgrounds, examiner experience, or documented success preparing candidates to Grade B. The quality of what you find depends entirely on how carefully you search.

The platform's scheduling flexibility is a real advantage for healthcare professionals. Shift patterns in nursing, medicine, and allied health do not align neatly with fixed class timetables. The ability to book a tutor at 6 am or 10 pm, week to week, matters in a way it would not for a student with a standard schedule.

The core trade-off is that Preply provides no structural guarantee around OET expertise. A tutor who lists OET preparation in their profile may have extensive examiner-level knowledge, or may have added the tag because they passed the exam once. Distinguishing between these profiles requires trial lessons and careful reading of verified student reviews. Parents and candidates who have time for that process can find excellent value here. Those who need reliable quality from the first booking should opt for a platform with more controlled selection.

    Standout Feature: Scheduling Flexibility

No other platform in this comparison offers the same combination of tutor variety and on-demand availability. Candidates working irregular clinical shifts can find OET tutors available in early mornings, late evenings, and at short notice. This flexibility has real practical value for working healthcare professionals.

    Key Features

    • Large tutor pool with a searchable OET specialist filter
    • Video introductions and verified student reviews before booking
    • Flexible scheduling with on-demand availability
    • Trial lesson available at reduced cost
    • All four sub-tests coverable depending on tutor selection

    Pros

    • Scheduling flexibility suits irregular clinical work patterns
    • Wide tutor pool allows finding profession-specific OET experience with enough searching
    • Transparent pricing with per-hour rates rather than package commitments
    • Trial lesson reduces commitment risk before selecting a long-term tutor

    Cons

    • No quality control specifically around OET expertise; tutor quality varies significantly
    • Finding a suitable tutor requires significant upfront effort and potentially multiple trial lessons
    • No profession-specific materials included; tutor brings their own resources

    Price

Tutor rates range from approximately $50–$250+ per hour, depending on tutor background and experience. OET specialists with examiner experience typically sit at the higher end of that range.

Prices last checked: May 2026. Always verify current packages on the platform's website before purchasing.

    Best For

Healthcare professionals with irregular work patterns who want flexible one-to-one tutoring and are willing to invest time in finding the right tutor. A good supplementary option alongside official materials or a structured course.

Some tutors are con-men Had a trial lesson with a Nigerian tutor yesterday. This man had assured me he had prepared for the class. I asked him to prepare material for the written part of the OET exam. He began the class by just staring at me, and asking pointed questions about my headscarf. Then he wanted to know where I was in the world - he was sitting in a bathroom in Lagos. And, he was slightly abusive about my past OET written score. When I asked him if he had prepared anything for the lesson - he said no. He said ge hadn't, because it was a trial lesson and he's not going to get paid. I found his behaviour insufferable, so I left the class. He then proceeded to message me on the site saying I had wasted his time!

    Trustpilot: 4.4/5

The best OET preparation course is the one that matches a candidate’s need for clinical accuracy, targeted feedback, and realistic exam practice. Official OET resources are valuable for learning the exam format and expected standards, but many candidates also need expert guidance to turn that knowledge into a Grade B result.

For healthcare professionals who want focused support in Writing and Speaking, Flalingo offers the strongest overall package by combining specialist clinical English tutors, exam-style practice, and clear progress tracking. It prepares candidates for OET as a healthcare communication test, where professional tone, patient-centred language, accuracy, and strategy all directly affect performance.

While OET is designed for healthcare professionals, some learners also consider TOEFL or IELTS as well. Explore our expert-reviewed preparation course rankings for both exams.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum OET score needed to register as a nurse in the UK?

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requires a minimum Grade B in each of the four OET sub-tests. Grade B corresponds to a score of 350 or above. Individual score requirements should always be verified directly with the NMC before registration, as requirements can be updated.

How long does OET preparation typically take?

Most healthcare professionals with a solid general English base require between four and eight weeks of focused preparation, according to CBLA guidance and candidate experience. Preparation time increases for candidates who are not yet comfortable with clinical English writing formats or who need to rebuild Speaking confidence. Targeted preparation addressing specific sub-test weaknesses is more effective than general English study.

Is OET harder than IELTS for healthcare professionals?

The comparison is not straightforward. OET uses healthcare-specific scenarios throughout, which most clinical professionals find more intuitive than IELTS's general academic topics. However, the Writing and Speaking sub-tests apply strict clinical communication criteria that go beyond general English accuracy. Many healthcare professionals who score well on IELTS Speaking still fail OET Writing on their first attempt because the letter format and clinical register are very different from what general English preparation addresses.

Can OET be taken online from home?

OET offers an at-home testing option. Candidates should confirm with their target regulatory body whether the at-home version is accepted before booking. The OET official website provides updated guidance on accepted test modes by country and profession.

How many times can OET be retaken if a candidate fails one sub-test?

There is no official limit on OET retakes. Candidates can retake individual sub-tests through OET's partial retake option, subject to eligibility and regulatory acceptance. This is particularly useful for candidates who achieve Grade B in three sub-tests but narrowly miss in the fourth. Each sub-test result is reported separately, so candidates can target specific areas rather than repeating the full exam.

What makes the OET Writing sub-test difficult, and how should candidates prepare?

The Writing sub-test requires candidates to transform case notes into a profession-specific letter, typically a referral, discharge, or transfer letter, in 40 minutes. Common failure points include copying case note content without clinical editing, using an inappropriate register with the recipient, failing to address the reader's informational needs, and insufficient structure. Expert writing feedback from someone who understands both the clinical context and the OET marking criteria is the most effective preparation tool for this sub-test.
